Adding a laugh track doesn't make it funny.

Warpigpen: Adding a laugh track doesn't make it funny.

As evidenced by The Big Bang Theory.

I dunno. Watching Joffrey get biatch-slapped to a laugh track amused me immensely.

Yeah, that didn't really work as intended.

Never got into Game of Thrones. I tried, got a few episodes in, but TV shows are rarely good enough. Being TV shows is the issue. You have to stretch narratives out for hours and hours and hours. And I don't have time for soap operas.

Going into that series cold, especially if you don't have specific interest in the genre, would be tough. If anything, the narrative was heavily condensed, to the point that you could barely afford to miss a line, or a look, or an establishing shot.

But yeah, if your preferred story-telling medium is film, where the focus is typically on fewer characters, then a TV series based on a 4000+ page series of novels is probably not the way to go.

/As a control test, how did you feel about the LotR films?

I've never read the books but I like the tv show. Didn't find it difficult to get into, but I agree that if you miss 5 minutes here or there you will miss out on some major storyline. Still good though.

Game of Thrones is primarily for the readers of the books. It doesn't try to cater to non-readers and people who don't like the genre.

The show, like the book, is based off payoffs later on.

Its a fantasy world. It has to...you know establish its own context.

The genre switch videos seem more like a demo of $300 editing software than actual entertainment.

Don't read the books then, it's much and more of what you don't like about the TV show.

I, on the other hand, greatly enjoyed both series immensely.

/mmmmm, stretched narratives

This is completely incorrect. Never read the books and absolutely love the show.

In fact, I find the people who have read the books get really irritated by the show when they change a couple things here and there.

2012-11-23 04:47:20 PM
Yeah that didn't work at all. They basically just threw a laugh track over a couple of scenes. Lame.

Yup. BBT is like a mix of the worst aspects of Frasier, Chuck, and Friends, except with no reasonably funny principal cast members and terrible writing.

carrion_luggage: A three-hour battle? A THREE-HOUR BATTLE?!

The weather starting getting rough, the...I give up, I was going for a Gilligan's Island thing here, but I don't feel like putting the effort in.

As for the show, they need to be playing that shiat when it's cold outside, not during the middle of summer or whatever it was this year. Burn Notice should be on in the summer. Radio stations shouldn't play "I'm Only Happy When it Rains" when it's a gorgeous day outside, or "In the Air Tonight" at 9 am. What the fark is wrong with people?

Was it wrong to order Ned's execution? Should I not have done that?

To be fair, though, this practice is hardly limited to Game of Thrones

This. Sort of.

I read the books & think they are totally overrated as books. It makes for far better television.

Would "The Contest" be about who could go the longest without raping anyone?

Also, it's interesting that we've got a TV snob trifecta in here; for some reason the Big Bang Theory haters got in on this.
