Had to look that one up.

Glad to hear Mike has something else coming. Seems like a stand-up guy. Plus: a lovely singing voice.

Is there anything even good left on that channel besides Mythbusters? The decline of good programming on that channel and history channel was the final push to make me cut the cable cord over the summer. Now I just download the entire 3 shows combined between the two channels I even watched.

mythbusters' inevitable cancellation can't be too far behind. that show has gotten increasingly stupid in recent years, i can barely watch it anymore. i think dirty jobs' cancellation might also have something to do with them running out of potential jobs, and mike rowe and his crew maybe wanting to move on to something else. they had a good run.

I think the same problem has plagued Mythbusters: they've simply run out of myths to bust. At some point they need to go away or change the title of the show to "Blowing Sh*t Up".

If you're into Pawn Stars, there's that. I actually like Pawn Stars - but I quite enjoy the thrifting business as I used to work at a Goodwill and have some appreciation for the skill involved in what they do. That being said, the half a dozen other thrifting shows they have and the other thrifting shows on cable have sort-of ruined a lot of that fun for me. Modern Marvels is always... something. Informative I guess?

I've never watched Swamp People, Ax Men or IRT. I assume they are all awful.

It is more hit or miss than it used to be, overall though I still think it is one of the best shows on TV. Maybe that is a bit like being a giant among dwarfs, but I still enjoy most of the shows. Just looking over this season...

Duct Tape Island was a little lame, Fire vs. Ice was actually pretty cool, I liked the square wheels/date night episode, Pirates and Battle of the sexes (especially the latter) wasn't that entertaining, it was funny watching the Walrus wear heels but other than that the episode was a little boring, I really liked the duel and bridge jump episodes...

The rest were a similar mixed bag but with more pluses than minuses IMO. The Myths they are testing are a little more obscure, and some of it is less a myth and more a "Would this actually work?", but I still look forward to it every week.

As a matter of fact discovery itself has become pretty bad in recent years. Where during the mid 2000s it was probably my favorite TV network.

Not getting the Spiffy tag. If anything Dirty Jobs was one of the few shows that kept with the Discovery Channel theme anymore. Sure it wasn't nature documentaries or "science of X", but it explored interesting and unique jobs and saught to educate viewers about them. Unlike say Deadliest Catch, a show about ONE job that focuses on a drama between the people like every damn reality show.

Though Discovery has been going the way TLC has for years now. With the History Channel two steps ahead.

Though I did see a promo for a new History Channel show that will deal with... You know, human history the other day. Who'd a thunk it?

I actually liked Dirty Jobs for awhile. It was kinda cool to see jobs people do that you don't really think about. The problem was the last few seasons, it became repetitive.

Is this a post from 6 years ago? That's about the last time Mythbusters was what I'd call "good". Now it's about an explosion, "testing" completely fictional "myths" from movies, pre-determining if they want to "prove" of "bust a specific myth, and seeing how many times in one episode they can claim that they're using "science" as they proceed to flush the scientific method down the same toilet that they determined was the cleanest surface in your hose(One of the few really well done myths in a long time). I refuse to watch reality TV, but the few times I watched Dirty Jobs, I really liked it. I'm sure they've got another redneck based show in the works where they're doing some job that nobody gives a fark about.

Sigh... I can remember the days when my only complaint is that they had more commercials than showtimes and that they would go to those commercial breaks with a two minute "when we come back" teaser, and then come back with a 2 minute "just before we left" recap. I sat down and did the math one time, and figured out that you're getting something like 20 minutes worth of show in an hour. The rest was either commercials or them telling you what you just finished watching. I miss those days...

I do, too. Of course the hipster thing to do is talk trash about it, but really the only thing I can't stand is all the "drama" they like to inject--'How will Chumlee fark up today?', 'What will Rick say to The Old Man to make him yell at a cloud, etc... I really am impressed by all the shiat they actually know, and the stuff brought into that store is amazing.

I still only watch the show if there's nothing else on, I'm trying to kill a half an hour or so, or if I'm browsing the channels and just happen to find it.

lacydog: I've never watched Swamp People, Ax Men or IRT. I assume they are all awful.

A year or two before the stupid show ran, Discovery did a 2 hour show on the ice road truckers(It's obviously got the show greened). It was great, totally impressive what those guys do. When the show came out, on the other hand, I knew it was going to be garbage, Specifically because I knew that they wouldn't just be satisfied with making the weather the bad guy, they would have to insert some drama somewhere into their "unscripted reality show". Yeah, "unscripted", my ass.

I DO actually like American Restoration, but once again; drama. Still, the guy and his crew are truly artists...

Beta Tested: The Myths they are testing are a little more obscure, and some of it is less a myth and more a "Would this actually work?", but I still look forward to it every week.

"Obscure" is pretty much the point, and is what used to make the show cool. Now they test bizarre shiat like if men can grill better than women and who is better at reading a map. The 'guys do it better than women' crap isn't an urban legend type of myth, it's just sexism. Besides, they need a group bigger than the cast to do a real study on shiat like this. It's kind of like when they "tested" beer goggles and decided that after drinking, they'd sleep with more women than sober. That shiat is so subjective, and is based more on the last time you got laid, when the next time might happen, and whether or not you're one of the last 2 people in the bar.

Oh, the 'Battle of the Sexes' was absolutely terrible, I agree (I think I mentioned that one specifically in my post). Like I said it can be pretty hit or miss now, part of me wonders if they spread out the really good myths because there aren't as many anymore. Some of the movie ones are cool though and a bit surprising, like the Lethal Weapon 2 bathtub bomb shelter thing. We could both probably pick out a roughly equal list of utterly useless and subjective tests, and very useful and well done tests, with most not really falling clearly into either category.

I liked the "Duel" episode, the Kendo part was dumb but the Knife vs. Gun was not at all. Although people involved in self defense have known for a while that at close range a knife is often a better weapon than a gun it was nice to see the Mythbusters show that and let a main stream audience in on it.

Looking through the wiki they still test useful stuff, like tire pressure fuel efficiency, how best to stifle a sneeze, fixing a flat, motorcycles and the environment, toughness of bedliner, Monty Hall Paradox (a lesson in probability and statistics), driving and footwear (not entertaining but applicable to daily life), etc. That was just me looking at the last couple seasons.

As for what is and what isn't science, I tend to agree with xkcd on this one. Yea they fail at basic rigor, but the whole point is they gather information through testing and experimentation, and that they ESPECIALLY aren't afraid to revisit and retest with new information. In a world where so many people believe in nonsense like homeopathy, astrology, healing bracelets, and so on it is refreshing to see a popular show show the scientific process of hypothesis/experimentation being the path to knowledge.

That's what I was thinking. These types of shows run out of the sort of content that inspired them in the first place. There are only so many dirty jobs like septic cleaners, and, well, once you've covered them all, the show is over.
I agree about Mythbusters, too. I was a huge fan when it came out, but now I just check to see what they're doing and most of the time it doesn't pass my "always wondered about that" test like they used to.
So, I watch something else.

I'm sad to see this happen, not just because Mike Rowe is wonderful to listen to, but Dirty Jobs was one of the only 'reality' shows out there that didn't feel the need to make fake drama.

Dirty Jobs Down Under was cool...but Discovery aired it only once whereas in the past they'd wear out the tape on it. Methinks this either has been planned quite a while by Discovery or there's a lot not being said.

Either way, it's getting close to being delisted in the Muse house-just like TLC was, and almost all the other Discovery channels. I just hope they keep their mitts off of The Science Channel...

So Mythbusters isn't perfectly rigorous. So what? You realize it's a TV show, right? Even if they wanted to make everything perfectly scientific, they still have to do what they must to pull ratings so advertisers open their wallets. Now, what's gonna get you more views? A fifteen minute section detailing the use of control groups, or Kari Byron exploding a fruit stand in some sexy getup? The audience has spoken on that one.

Just be thankful it isn't show #2,188,237 about bigfoot, aliens, magic debt relief jesus water, homeopathy, or selling books that are "magic cures THEY don't want you to know about". Mythbusters isn't the coup de grace on pseudoscience, but it's a decent opening salvo. Kids like the show, and they're the ones who need more science and less woo.

They do the rigor that time, budget and the insurance company allow, and if enough people tell them they got it wrong, they're perfectly willing to go back and revisit according to the parameters of your choice. No, they don't do full scientific rigor. They're not scientists. They're special effects people who took up science and have less time and money to do the job actual scientists do. You've got to speed the process up some or else you're not going to have a show.

They went to AUSTRALIA for their last Dirty Jobs series. That's pretty desperate.

But there's only so many ways to get dirty, and then it's all just variants on tight spaces and wet filth. Most jobs are tedium, and even most dirty jobs.

Kind of a CSB, if it wasn't so gross.

I was jogging one day during the summer in Virginia. I was about 20, in relatively decent shape, and was trying to stay that way. Since it was so hot, I wore a tank top. When I got home, I sat down in my lawn chair exhausted and sweating. After sitting there for a few minutes, I heard the phone ring. Getting up to answer it, I felt a sharp pain just up on my shoulders.

Once I realized it was back hair that had gotten snagged in the webbing of the chair, I ran to the shower (didn't answer the phone) after duct taping a razor to a dowel rod an proceeded to shave every surface on my back I could.

Eleven years later, I just let the hair grow. I can't fight it. My family legacy is to be a hairy sonoabiatch. Best I can hope for is keeping my head shaved somewhat cleanly.

Yes. Tom Selleck is delicious and has that soothing voice. I don't think Burt Reynolds was sexy because of the hair on his head but the rest of him was nice. I like a full beard too (not long, just full).

It was stated on a public forum with no name other than an online pseudonym. Without some sort of citation, it's just so much internet hearsay.

2012-11-23 01:13:59 PM
Mike Rowe was NOT a Romney shill. He got invited to what he thought was a roundtable discussion on a topic he's passionate about, the lack of vocational training and the shunning of decent jobs like plumbing, and it turned out to be a political rally instead. So he was sort of suckered and didn't like it and wrote about it on his blog.

"It was awkward," Rowe says, recounting his reaction to the "endorsement" headlines that greeted him when he got off the plane in Cleveland. "I truly was anticipating a roundtable. In my head, I saw it as Charlie Rose, right? And I'm going to sit down with a bunch of enlightened visionaries and local business leaders, and have a serious conversation...What do they say-all failures are communication failures? I don't know who said what to whom, I just know that once the 'endorsement' word popped up, you can't really get the shiat back in the goose."

So we should just believe 3rd hand information?

Hows this:

His crew has been with him since the beginning... In hollywood, that kind of commitment and loyalty means something, it means the people you work with are a great group of people... because crews can pack up and leave or a real asshole will fire a crew member on a whim (See Christian Bale, Billy Crystal)

So i'll pass on word of a friend of an anonymous internet poster and look at the facts at hand... the people around him like him...

fusillade762: enderthexenocide: mythbusters' inevitable cancellation can't be too far behind. that show has gotten increasingly stupid in recent years, i can barely watch it anymore. i think dirty jobs' cancellation might also have something to do with them running out of potential jobs, and mike rowe and his crew maybe wanting to move on to something else. they had a good run.

Modern Marvels is always... something.
