The U.S. delegation to an upcoming United Nations telecom treaty-writing conference will not budge on its positions advocating free speech online and opposing broad new regulations for the Internet, the leader of the delegation said.

/But..but ....how can we control the minds of our citizenry if we don't control what they think, read, hear, and squash any opportunity for them to have a different opinion or beliefs than what we have? Wahhhhhhhh. Fark you China and N. Korea and any other country that oppresses civil rights.

People are confusing free speech for criminal speech. Just because you do it online doesn't mean it is legal. PIPA and SOPA wouldn't exist if so many dipshiats wouldn't so brazenly violate copyright law (notice that I didn't say stealing).

Also, copyright and patent law need to be completely retooled.

Well the way the UN is talking is that they want control of it to basically censor anything they want, I hate our government but there is no way the UN needs to be in control of anything, they fark up more than any other nation. Also hidden is some of their bills is how they want an international tax on wealthier countries to build out infrastructure to poorer nations, which is just stupid since they dont have devices needed to take advantage of high speed access and wireless with decent speeds reach them now, although its not cheap.

The US has not been a perfect steward of the Internet, but they've been considerably less intolerable than any other entity we currently know of would be, including the UN. Sealand might be better from a philosophical standpoint, but they don't have the capacity to make it work.

There are certain people I think are idiots that I have ignored, but that's about it. The good trolls are actually favorited.

2012-11-22 01:22:37 PM
The headline's a total straw-man. There's nothing in there that indicates that _anybody_'s especially looking to restrict speech on the internet. That said, the key words are there.

"Instead of creating new regulations that could affect the Internet, the ITU should do away with the international telecom regulations, he said. Instead of the ITU, private companies and civil society should come up with rules for interconnection and other telecom issues, he said."

This is about removing net neutrality.

Looks like the telecom lobbyists are still looking for carte blanche to throttle your connection based on your destination if those sites don't pay through the nose for preferential treatment.

Don't worry about it. That's just the argument that people who are on a lot of ignore lists use.

I guess they go out in their daily life and seek out crazy people, people they hate, and people who are just offensive assholes, and listen to them for hours. Because THEY don't ignore people. Nope. They wouldn't do something so shallow.

Morality is less important than profit according to google. I fully understand that. However google was suppose to be the "don't be evil" company.

It's also important to talk about what is censored. There are reasonable arguments to be made about certain kinds of censorship - copyright law, child porn, etc. Google shouldn't be in the business of censoring opinion. Which they are.

jjorsett: Phil Moskowitz: Why don't you guys use your ignore list. You'll live longer.

Life would certainly be much more pleasant if we never heard an opinion we disagreed with or were offended by. The UK and other countries are attempting to apply this principle to their entire societies.

Can you back that up?

whidbey: I love it when the US actually behaves as if it's a powerful component of the UN every now and then and that its voice more than matters.

Well as one of the few countries with the power to veto it does matter. And being the most powerful country in the world with the biggest economy and military doesn't hurt either.

We could shut down the UN anytime we wanted simply by withdrawing from it.

Hence, one of the major reasons I am in favor of withdrawing from it.

It's too late, really. We've already armed the blacks, and we are in the process of arming the illegals from Mexico and Central America. While we don't need to brainwash the blacks anymore, it will still take until 2016 to fully propagandize the latinos that the only way to get free stuff is to vote Democrat party and let us liberals enslave all the productive whites like you.
I've put in a request to be allowed to take a bullwhip to your fat, flabby, pink ass personally.

You're confused as to the nature of what's going on here. It isn't actually a nice, juicy minnow. It's just a chrome-plated steel blade with a #16 treble hook attached to it.

If that is true then good. He deliberately created that film as a means to incite violence and hatred. He and those who support him are no better than the Taliban.

If he was arrested specifically for making that video, then no, that's not good. First amendment and all that. But he wasn't. He was arrested for violating his probation.

I think the US lost a golden opportunity to say, WHY YES, we would love to be able to censor/alter the content of other countries web content delivered to its people, Iran we will start with YOU, - amandina-crazyguy YOU now embrace homoxesuality in our tolerant values. Columbia, you just announced you are seeking the execution of alll drug lords (think hunger games.....RUN).

Palistine and ALL other arab nations have announced their recognition of Isreal to exist and will place an embassy from Israel in each nation.

Mexico has demanded the recall of all its citizens and will begin to freeze the bank accounts and land holdings of those who cannot account for their whearabouts.

For the last 12 years, all I have heard from Fark is how we need to be a Global Citizen and give way to the authority of supra-national organizations. Now all of a sudden it is ok to say 'fark you' to them? Confused.

Except that's not what the ingore list is for. B- and others make the ignore list bexause their 'opinions' have shown to be not worth reading, or downright trolling. I have yet to meet this mythical farker who ignores people just because he disagrees with them or finds them offensive, hell Most people on this site are offensive

I know a few. They tend to be the ones who talk about their ignore lists repeatedly on said threads.

madgonad: People are confusing free speech for criminal speech. Just because you do it online doesn't mean it is legal. PIPA and SOPA wouldn't exist if so many dipshiats wouldn't so brazenly violate copyright law (notice that I didn't say stealing).

Also, copyright and patent law need to be completely retooled.

And you're confusing SOPA with "due process of law" and "presumed innocent" and "right to appeal."

SOPA was "corporate overlords are judge, jury and executioner. Their rights trump all others. They are supercitizens."

MooseUpNorth: The headline's a total straw-man.

How about no. Without going into the ridiculousness that is LTE standards, the bowing to AT&T lobbyists to reclassify what 4G means the ITU still does an important job. Even with global certification and standards the world still can't decide on global frequencies for mobile. Fortunately that isn't a life or death case where as Emergency Signals, satellite positions etc all have much more at risk and the ITU does a decent job of keeping that together.

The ITU and its telecom regulations have hung around after their original purpose has expired, Mueller said. "It's almost impossible for intergovernmental organizations to go out of existence," he said. "They just hang on and try to think of new things to do."

Yeah there are no global communication issues now that we solved landlines and ethernet...

And yet, the USA is against net neutrality and is in favor of crap like SOPA, or whatever congress renamed it to this week to throw everyone off.

What he said. The US is too obsessed with regulating it and censoring it in a way that benefits mega corps to allow anyone else to have a remote chance of gouging that pie before they fark it.

How long do you think before we get our government controlled and monitored universal internet access?

Yeah, not a very good deal. We got all the monitoring and but not the right to free universal internet access.

Hilarious. Subby actually believes it's about censorship, and not about ceding control.
