I like womens soccer over mens soccer. The women, oddly enough, spend less time on their backs biatching about the other players.

It looks like they are going to do what they should have done the first two times the started a women's league: piggyback off of the men's league until it's financially self sufficient. Hopefully it lasts longer than three years.

While I agree, I do not think the MLS was capable of having a league piggy back off them in 2001. It could have lead to the death of both leagues. Now with 20 teams and improving revenues/attendance, they are able to do so.

True, but they could have had more assistance from the MLS with the WPS in 2007. The ownership issues (especially that dickstain Borislow) didn't help either, so hopefully the league has something in place to guarantee front office stability as well.

Yeah but doesn't one team have like a 35k stadium? The CFL Averages more fans than both NHL and MLS because there's 8 teams. It's also more per ticket than MLS and I don't think anyone is going to claim the CFL is a major sports league.

I'm going to bet Portland supports the heck out their team. They sell out all Timbers games as second year expansion team with a shiat record.

Of course MLS outdraws hockey and basketball, they play fewer games and in bigger stadiums and the tickets are cheaper. The biggest sports crowd of the week is always the NASCAR race, is that the #1 sport in America? TV ratings are a meaningless comparison too. Let me know when MLS gets a TV deal like the NHL has. Even the EPL gets more US TV rights money.

Being a DC United fan I would like to point out that with the new ownership a new stadium is fairly likely. Also with the team being semi-decent now average attendance is going up.

As for people asking about TV viewership, the MLS has a fairly large contract with NBC for lots of games on TV next year with a few still being on ESPN. They have a better deal than the NHL does even if it wasn't in lockout. Slowly but surely it is becoming more and more popular!

Of course, but they have to start somewhere. The league is only 16 years old. It is now far beyond the point of failing. In another 16 years it will probably be one of the biggest leagues in the world.
To put it into context, the NHL, which is derided as being a fringe sport in the US, would be the 2nd largest soccer league in the world just behind the EPL. The MLS can still be small in the US but be huge in the world of soccer.

Without Seattle, MLS averages about 17.5K a match. Seattle averages 44K a game, which is almost double the next team (LA) at 23K. The Sounders tend to skew the data a bit.

Football is interesting if you understand it. If you don't, well tough, then it's boring to you. But that's not an objective observation, since sports doesn't make it or break it, depending on your personal preference.

Female football is boring for everyone. Understanding it doesn't help at all, it probably just makes it worse as you understand and see all the nuances of their tactical and technical failing.

That's why female football isn't popular as a spectator sport anywhere in the world.

The average MLS stadium as a similar capacity to that of an indoor arena. The stadium San Jose plays in holds less than 11,000 (though they are building a new stadium). Only Seattle, DC, and New England play in NFL stadiums, and only Seattle packs theirs.

I'm in Portland and I'm already on the waiting list for season tickets for our team in this league. I have no more idea what the future holds than anyone else, but I'll support my team so long as I have one to support.

Also, since both Megan Rapinoe and Abby Wambach live within a mile of where I'm standing, maybe our team could actually be good.
