This Week's Theme: "History Happened Here"

Description: Shots of historical sites, markers, re-enactors, or artifacts.

We ask that before submitting your photos you read and adhere to the following submission rules, including but not limited to the following:
- Submissions must be photographs; screen captures do not count as photographs.
- You must be the original photographer of your entry. Do not submit anyone else's photography as your own.
- You are only allowed to enter a photograph once. Do not submit the same photo to another contest later.
- You may enter 3 photos in each contest as long as each photo is of a different composition.
- Please post each photo separately so they can be voted for individually.

Please note:
The overarching ideal behind Farktography is that image corrections are acceptable, while adding or removing elements in the image (e.g. removing telephone poles, adding Elvis) is not acceptable. HDR, stitching, or otherwise combining exposures in post processing are not allowed unless specified for a particular theme (multiple exposures done in-camera are acceptable, however). See the rules for more information on acceptable modifications, or check in at the Farktography Forums.

The anchor from the U.S.S. Arizona in Weslin Bolin Park, Phoenix Az. (couldn't get any closer to the actual ship in time for the contest, but it sunk at Pearl Harbor). Light painted for 30 seconds.

After Pearl Harbor, the goverment gathered up all the Japanese Americans (and anyone else who looked the part 'close enough') who lived near the west coast, and kept them locked up here, at the site of Papago Park, Phoenix, Az.

/round about 900 years ago, people lived here, overlooking the Salt River. We don't know their names, so we just call them the Salado (Salt) people.

The Baker Hotel - Mineral Wells, TX
Opened in 1929, just days after the stock market crash - famous guests who came for the area's famous mineral water include Glenn Miller, Clark Gable, Judy Garland and future President Lyndon B. Johnson

The house Millard Fillmore built in 1825.

He was an example of the Peter Principle.

Ramapo Reformed Church

 
Mahway, NJ.  Built in 1798, it's the oldest public building in Mahwah and the older of only two remaining frame Churches in Bergen County, NJ that date to the Federal period.  It was used as both a place of worship and a public meeting house in its early years, and it continues as a house of worship today.

And this is the view that Portola saw. He was trying to make his connection in Monterey Bay, and missed it by about 75 miles. Silicon Valley stretches in the distance.

Ellis Island

 
The original immigration station on Ellis Island was built in 1892, but it burned down 5 years later.  This building was opened in 1900 and was used to process immigrants until it was closed in 1954.  Ellis Island was declared part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument in 1965, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places a year later.  The immigration station building now houses the Immigration Museum.

Old Paramus Reformed Church

 
Located in what is now Ridgewood, NJ, the Church was originally built in 1735, and it was used by General George Washington as a military headquarters in 1778 and 1780.  During the Revolutionary War it was used as a barracks, hospital, and prison.  The current Church was built in 1800 with stones from the original Church; the cemetery contains stones dating to at least the 1760s, including many revolutionary war veterans.  Some of the early stones are written in Dutch.
