You can cheat but as long as you keep winning games, being successful, and generating lots of that sweet sweet revenue, the NCAA will conveniently always look the other way and let you continue along on your merry path. But once you start sucking and stop with the victories (read = you are no longer a profitable venture for them), the claws will suddenly come out again.

But, this is the SEC. Cant ESPN come in and save them? They magically made them the "Vastly superior conference" after their TV deal, surely with enough planted analysis, they can convince everyone that an SEC school is above such things.

/122 years of not being caught. this isnt an SEC problem, its an "every damn program" problem. If you arent cheating, you certainly arent competing at the level Missouri did there for awhile. Especially if your campus is in the ozarks. Not a lot of talent flocking to the Ozarks to live.

Well they thought they would be able to even the series record up before 2020 but their losses make that impossible, its also ironic that he says "thinking they would be good" when those players are obviously good enough to beat florida, also florida has been accused of this in the past as well.

Auburn shouldn't complain. The last time they cheated and got away with it, they won a national title. And yes, I realize everyone cheats. As a Nebraska fan, it irritates me when sanctimonious Husker fans claim Nebraska runs their program "the right way." No one who is relevant in college football runs their program the right way, and I think it's naive for anyone to think that (unless you're Vanderbilt). Everyone cheats. Everyone.

Our campus isn't in the Ozarks, and our recent success is mostly with 2 and 3 star recruits that Oklahoma and Texas didn't want. You don't really need to bribe those guys.

I've always wondered about the "star" system for ranking recruits. My alma mater also generally takes players who were passed up by OU or Texas and has recently done pretty well against them. The stars seem to be more about how many big programs are recruiting them and not based so much on potential.
Good coaching and an awesome weight training program can do wonders for the right guys.

The NCAA makes no money off I-A football (OK, it makes $500,000 off licensing, but that's it). The TV contracts are between the networks and the conferences. The NCAA doesn't do this for money. It does it because it's arbitrary and capricious. It's why Penn State gets the banhammer for criminal activity and negligence unrelated to actual football players and North Carolina skates despite mounting evidence that its football and basketball players were academically ineligible for at least the last decade.

And before anyone suggests that the NCAA ignores big programs, the following programs are among the 15 winningest in college football history:

Michigan (on probation)
Ohio State (bowl ban, scholarship reductions, vacated wins)
Alabama (has had bowl ban and vacated wins in the past decade)

I just wanted to note something that I was researching today. We all know that preseason polls are awful and shouldn't hold any weight. And yet, they dictate an awful lot about what we perceive as "strength of schedule". I noted earlier in the year (in a week 1 thread, while watching BGSU/Florida, because BGSU is my alma matter) that it was beyond stupid that the SEC had so many ranked teams (including at the time Tennessee, who cracked the top 25 after beating up two creampuffs in OOC play, only to get stomped by Florida in their third game). But here are teams with 4 or more losses (to this point) that started the season ranked in either the AP or USA Today poll.

Arkansas (10th in both polls), 2-7 on the year, 2-2 OOC
West Virginia (8 AP, 7 USAToday), 5-5 on the year, 3-0 OOC
Wisconsin (12th both), 7-4, 3-1 OOC
Michigan State (13th both) 5-6, 3-1 OOC
Virginia Tech (top 20 both) 5-5, 2-2 OOC
TCU (top 20 both) 6-4, 3-1 OOC
Auburn (25th USAtoday, n/r AP), 3-8, 3-1 OOC

I went into this thinking that the SEC bias would show. While Arkansas and Auburn were both flagrant misses (seriously, those teams are awful), and it's true that Tennessee should never have been ranked for beating NC State and Georgia State, the preseason polls were bad for other conferences as well. The 4-loss cutoff helps the Big Ten look slightly better, since 3 wins would mean Michigan would also be included as a big disappointment (along with Oklahoma St). Even with that, it remains true that the Big Ten is not very good, with Ohio State ineligible they'll likely be sending an 8-4 Wisconsin to face 10-2 Nebraska for the title. I think you could make the argument that it's understandable that TCU and WVU would be hard to predict, given that it's their first year in the Big 12. That, and TAMU making waves in the SEC, makes a pretty compelling argument for the strength of the Big 12.

So yes, the SEC is overrated. But not by as much as I thought. I railed before on Florida making the top 25 despite being 6-6 last year and having a quarterback controversy. I still think they benefit from a poor OOC schedule (in which they struggled to put away Bowling Green and Louisiana-Lafayette, while stomping Jacksonville State), and aren't really that great. But I'll admit I was expecting more of an 8-4 season from them, figuring that LSU, Georgia, South Carolina and either TAMU or FSU would beat them. Still, that Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas were ranked at any point in this season suggests that people simply vote up any SEC team that has yet to lose because they're playing nobodies in the first few weeks.

On the "underrated" side, we have Notre Dame, who cracked the USA Today top 25, but not the AP. Texas A&M was unranked by both, but since it's their first year in the SEC, I'm not sure that's good news for the SEC strength argument. UCLA, Oregon State and Rutgers were unranked and didn't even get votes in either poll. Arizona and Washington are 24 and 25 in the BCS, and started unranked (no votes in Zona's case). But since they're both 7-4, I'm not sure if they really even SHOULD be there. That suggests that the PAC-12 might be the most underrated conference, at least this year.

This all goes back to Cam and them winning the title. Auburn isn't suppose to win the title because they aren't one the huge money schools. They won by buying the best player they could get, just like every other top tier school, and NCAA didn't like it. Just read up on SMU. It was fine an dandy till they beat the Longhorns and NCAA told them to stop. They kept doing, along with everyone else, and was made an example of.

Cleared is a strong term, they weren't cleared, the case was stopped due to lack if connecting evidence but there was enough evidence that they started to hold him out of the UGA game. Then they decided to play him anyway and deal with it later.
