Would she have had any better results if she had thrown the sliding car into reverse and gunned it? Assuming rear-weel drive, I mean.

i'm thinking not, because if you're not gripping, you have no directional control.

That really depends on the who, why and how of the injury. Bad people hurting themselves in amusing ways during the commission of wicked deeds, for example, is still entertainment. Reference: the Russian guy who tried to hijack a trucker and wound up getting his ass whupped and his car flipped upside down by a whole convoy of them instead.

StoPPeRmobile: People are dumb driven by habit and instinct.

I have a hard time criticizing people who get in unusual situations like this for their reactions. The initial thought is "HOLY shiat GOTTA STOP". How do you stop? Brakes. What do you do? Smash your feet on the brake pedal.

It's like people who get into a skid or hydroplane and suddenly slam on the brakes. Well, yea, probably not the best idea in most cases, but the natural reaction is to want to stop and that's how you stop, right? It takes a certain amount of practice to overcome that natural reaction.

Any Pie Left: Would she have had any better results if she had thrown the sliding car into reverse and gunned it?

Doubtful. She clearly had no traction at all. Like was already said, her best bet was to lay off the constant breaking and steer. Pump the brakes now and then when she had a clear path to try and keep some control of her speed.

Sometimes shiat happens and you just gotta go with the flow until it's over.

There is nothing natural about driving in a car.

What an intelligent person would have done, given the looks of that hill, is found another way around or waited for it to be cleared (or at least waited to watch another vehicle go ahead of them). At minimum, get out and check the road conditions on a hill that size before you start down.

You don't have to worry about how you'll react in those situations if you don't put yourself in them.

I've been there. Metaphorically, not *there* literaly.

I hit a nasty patch of ice at the top of the on-ramp trying to get on the freeway (which had been sanded) during an ice storm. I was in my old Jeep Wrangler and just started to spin spin spin down the onramp. Couldn't steer out of the spin, couldn't stop. It was just a sheet of ice all the way down.

I sat there and sort of just... experienced it. It had some big tires and it was lifted up, so the car just ricocheted down the ramp bouncing off the walls by the tires like a bumper-car. I literally slid backwards into the right line and then spun facing forward between two cars.

At the time I just sort of wiped the sweat off my brow and kept going - but looking back on it now I should have said "LIKE A GLOVE!"

You lived in Minnesota, and you thought 2 (two!) winter tires was the appropriate response to cold temps and snow?

Living in Colorado, these types of videos should be mandatory to watch before getting behidn the wheel in the winter. Too many jackholes from warmer states come out here and get a 4wheel drive and think they are invincible vehicles.

Probably the same reason as I do: because in many of them you get to see someone actually get instant consequences for their stupidity, and usually without anyone actually getting hurt.

Watching russian road rage videos is like watching videos from an alternate dimension. I mean, you have people who have no concern for anyone or anything just beating the shiat out of each other in every way possible. There was one video where a guy just hit another one and there was blood on his windshield for a good portion of the video until he hit an oncoming truck.

It was. That hill is about 5 blocks from my house. I successfully drove both up and then back down the street in the video about 20 minutes before the video was shot -- in a Dodge Intrepid.

Whoever said Colorado has too many drivers from warm states who think a 4x4 makes you invincible was exactly right.

I wish my wife understood that, she's watched me drive through multiple blizzards in our Audi A4, never sliding, never having an issue.

Last year she was driving through WV, got behind a semi and experienced whiteout conditions, we were doing about 50 mph. She freaked, started swerving and we went through the median and onto the other side of I-64. Luckily no cars were around, but she was at least smart enough to keep driving so that we ended up off the side of the road facing the correct way.

If you've ever been between Beckley and Greenbriar, you know how little of it this is possible without damage. Well we had no damage to the car, once she calmed down, I took over, drove to the next exit and turned around. By that time the police had shut down the highway and we had to sit in the car for 3 hours.

Either way, AWD doesn't make you invincible, but if you know what it can do, snow/ice is a non-issue.

Grease and oil on the other hand, no amount of tire/steering can get you out of that.
