kendelrio: netringer: kendelrio: Agree David Allen Coe did a great job, but "You Never Call Me By My Name" is not "his" song. It was written by a relatively obscure man named Steve Goodman. You may have heard of him.

You may have heard Steve's "City of New Orleans."

Steve wrote the country song when hanging out in Nashville with Jimmy Buffet and John Prine. They said there weren't nothing to writing this country music so he wrote the perfect country song.

I agree, "City of New Orleans" was a great song for Steve, however, another writer, a guy named Willie something-or-other really hit a home run with it. Coincidentally, that Willie guy wrote a hit song for a lady named Patsy Cline called "Crazy". You may have heard of it.

/I am loving this by the way...

Arlo Guthrie had the hit on "City of New Orleans" first. As he tells the story, Steve sat next to him at the bar and said he wanted to play him his new song. As thinks "I hate that. You know. What if the song is turrible." So Arlo says, "Tell ya what. You buy me a beer and you can do anything you want while I'm drinking it." "It was one of the finer beers I''ve ever had."

You can get anything you want.

I'd love to see the anchor team at our local ABC station (which, by corporate mandate, got rid of "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy!" in favor of "Viral Video Daily" and "Skype: the Game Show") walk out. The person who said TV stations are now run by bean counters is right.

booger42: Most stations are run by CMA's and CGA's now, not people with actual, you know, broadcasting experience. I pity anyone in journalism right now. Anyone with ethics, anyway.

Oh definitely but...channel 7...it was the only newscast that was literally painful to watch. it doesn't help that the station itself is COMPLETELY underfunded (a few years ago, they had exactly one news van, to cover the entire market), and is basically viewed by the entire broadcasting community of the region as where the college grads get their training wheels.

But I totally agree about the state of media. I know CBS was putting pressure on channel 5 for a 4:30 news program a few years back. Possible perhaps in big markets, kind of silly in Bangor which is ranked about 151st? But 7's problems didn't just come from the suits, the station is a journalist's war crime. The people are nice! But, god help them, they put up with so much to turn out what is basically a high school play in the newsroom.
