A little over two years ago, I held Angel (the white one in the photo) in my arms as she slipped away. I'm so sorry for your loss, subby. I'm glad you were there for your forever friend's final moments.

It does get better. I'll hoist one for your friend tonight.

OregonVet: Did you not know any better? And who the hell celebrates Thanksgiving on Tuesday?

Nice to know no grief is too personal or painful for some asshole to piss all over it. Stay classy, OregonVet.

OregonVet: Loaded Six String: Subby here,

I felt like a dick after my boobs. I apologize. I know what it's like. After trolling FARK for ten years I just reflex in certain ways. No excuse and I hope you find comfort soon.

Well, wish I could retract the harsher part of my reply. It takes guts and integrity to apologize. Well spoken, sir.

dualplains: Our eyes met as his were drooping shut for the last time and he gave me this look that I'll never forget, his eyes got kind of soft and I swear he smiled. Like he was saying, "Hey, don't worry about it. It's all good. I had a farking blast with you. Thanks for everything."

When Angel was fading she kept lowering her head and starting to close her eyes, then jerking awake as if to say "I'm fine! I'm still awake! Don't worry about me."

The SO, both my kids and I held her and told her she was a good, good dog; that she'd done a great job and always did her best and we were very, very proud of her; that we loved her and would miss her, but it was okay for her to go now.

She looked at each one of us steadily for a few seconds each, then -- I swear -- smiled and said "Okay. I'm just going to rest now." And then she laid her head down, sighed contentedly as if she was falling asleep after running in the yard all day, closed her eyes and stopped breathing.

Every time we hug my dog, he squirms and tries to run away. He's not a fan of the hugs.

It's been 10 years since my parents last dog, the one we got when I was 12, my parents moved about 4 years ago .. It still doesn't hit me until the dog doesn't come running to me when I visit. My dad passed this year, and although that's been rough, I still have a brief "Where's Cerberus?" moment when I walk into the new place. :(

I'm really sorry, subby.

/I'd hug my felines but I watched the light leave their eyes too...worst days of my life
/there really is a light isn't there
/maybe they're all hanging out together somewhere; I hope so

I feel for you subs. My last dog to go was a lab mix. I don't remember ever having to yell at him. The smartest dog I ever known. I think he even sensed it was his time to go.

Loaded Six String: OregonVet: Did you not know any better? And who the hell celebrates Thanksgiving on Tuesday?

Subby here, my boy didn't die from turkey. He had a tumor rupture a blood vessel and bled internally. Wagged his tail until the end and died in my arms while my father and I comforted him. He wasn't in any pain and didn't give any signs of fear. I added the article to remind other Farkers how to have a safe Thanksgiving with their pooch(es)

I'm sorry you lost a friend.

You reminder is good advice for all of us with pets.

Subby, My sincere condolences. I have lost many cats during my early years. They always seemed so insignificant. The First time I had a lost a dog that I truly loved and was connected with was a German Shepherd named Ace. I was the last person to be w/ him alive. It was a late summer day in N. IN (just out side of South Bend) and I went to my sister's house to kill a few hours between tests. Ace and I played ball and Frisbee for about an hour. When I had to go back to class he chased me down the driveway. After my tests and I got home my mom made call my sister. My mom didn't want to tell me. My sister game me the news.

I still get sad when I think of Ace. He was a present for my sister from my bro-in-law (their 1st anny). I feel that helped him grow his personality. He was my dog when he was very young and we had a very special bond (over the 14+ yrs).

I now have a Shepard / rottie mix now that I saved my GF's parents. I've had her several years (at least 4 yrs) and she's turning 12 or 13 this Jan. She has almost as smart as Ace when she wants to be. It is hard to replace that love and bond you have but it will get better. You will never find a replica, but I am sure you can find and nurture a similar personality.

My prayers are with you and good Subs.

Here's a pic of Bella w/ glaring Green Eyes

/Yep, she has gotten lots of hugs and belly rubs tonight.

Your dog was a good brave fella, Subby. I'm sorry you lost him. You and your dad saw him off right proper though. That's good too. I hope it will ease the hurt a little.

I miss my Blackie Collins. Something went wrong with his mouth and it got so bad that finally he cried with pain when he tried to eat the soft food I made for him.

Had to sit down and logic it out and it was cold logic and it hurt. But he was hurting more and I had an obligation to this little animal.

I couldn't leave him all alone in there with the vet, so I stayed with him and held gazes till the pain went away.

Swaggering little kitty dude is out there somewhere in the stars, waiting.

I'm gonna go pet my Miss Jasper FatCat now.

BYW, I "Aced" my tests that Day. So as his spirit has been and still is with me, I know your dog's spirit will always be with You! Good Luck! I hope you have a wonder Turkey Day!

Dogs truly are man's best friend and the anthropomorphism nonsense that is 'Caturday' should be replaced with a dog-day afternoon ( or whatever).

There, I said it.

Also, sorry for your loss subby.

Subby, I'm so sorry for your loss. And during the holidays too. I hope you are surrounded by loved ones who understand what you are going through, and give you comfort during this time.

Like others here, my computer is giving off a helluva lot of dust suddenly. And my lap-pug is wondering why Mommy is crying right now.......

I don't measure my lifetime in years, I've been measuring it by how many cats and dogs I've owned. And God, I'm getting old.

So sorry for you subby! I hug my pup a big hug every day...

/I do usually feed him a raw turkey neck for Thanksgiving though. Never, ever would give him cooked bones though!

Out of curiosity, why would you not feed your dog turkey skin? I never allowed my dogs to eat any "people food" anyway, but I am curious as to why turkey skin would be bad for them.

Turkey skin is currently thought to cause acute pancreatitis in dogs.

I made the call yesterday to let my 17 year old orange tabby go. He was in massive organ failure.

......damn, it's dusty in here.

Some dogs are more sensitive to fat than others and develop the acute pancreatitis described above, However, I know plenty of people who will even use things like hot dogs as training treats. When my GSD was a puppy I used cut up hot dog during most obedience classes.

I think it depends on your dog and how much he gets in relation to his size. That said, better safe than sorry and if you want to give your dog a yummy treat then lean meat would be a much healthier [and completely safe] alternative...

/my dog will work just as hard for plain chicken

Subby, I want to offer my condolences on the loss of your companion. We lost Rufus Maximus last October (the cat in my profile pic, he made it to twelve before his lungs filled up with liquid) and reading everyone posts here tonight re-opened all the missing him I hold in my heart. We got two new kittehs, Lucy and Chunk...but I still go out to the garden and talk to Rufus at least once a week. Anyhow, I hope everyone loves on their pets a little extra tonight, and that everyone had a wonderful holiday. Take care.

I am most sincerely sorry for your loss but you have your pal a great life. I know it hurts and pity the folks that simply cannot identify - regardless, it's like losing a best friend, losing an arm, losing part of your heart - it's like all of those combined.

/tips hat
