The new guy, the prisoner that was accepted into the group after T-Dog's untimely passing. The guy who likes comfy slippers.

Because people other than white males enjoy television, and it doesn't exactly hurt to see someone that you can relate to on the screen from time to time. Bonus points if he actually has a name.

Is that a Fark thing? I haven't seen that name used anywhere else. Plus, he's still alive. Are you assuming they'll kill him off as soon as another black guy joins the cast?

Yeah, that's the name FARK gave him when T-Dog was unceremoniously killed off in one of the first episodes in which he had extensive dialog. Not sure if the new guy is going to suffer the same fate, but he does seem expendable so far...

I guess that means they'll kill off the TOKEN BLACK GUY to make room for this new character, seeing that you can only have one TOKEN BLACK GUY per series at a time.

Who doesn't like comfy slippers? Especially after a long day of killing zombies, don't you think it would be nice to take of your boots and slip into a nice pair of slippers?

And did you see the way Daryl looked at him when he explained why he was so excited about the slippers? Daryl didn't look at him like "You are crazy" or "You are a dumb ass", he looked at him like "I get them on Tuesdays and Thursdays".

So this basically means that Oscar will get exactly enough character development to make us feel something when he gets ganked. Can't have more than two black guys afterall.

AverageAmericanGuy: I see. And race is important to you because...?

Because with the show being set around Atlanta, Georgia, statistically more, if not most, of the characters should be black. TV shows set in diverse cities are notoriously always really white (unless they're by David Simon). I'm not one to get overly sensitive about race, but it stands out if you're familiar with the area.

I love this show as much as the next, but I haven't read the comics, but based on the speculations it appears they want a black gay dog to join the cast, prison outfit and all so Rick can have his way with him.

Im just going by what the comments say, because there has been a rash of to many gay farkers lately.

Well the main character is from Kentucky. And there was was that delightful group of traditional urban players in the first season. I am sure they are doing jolly well staying in Atlanta.........

It's a horror story. All of the sensible black people grabbed a bunch of guns and ran to some place safe as soon as things started getting weird.

It will also be revealed that the zombie virus was spread by a bad batch of mayonnaise.

Yeah. A show with mostly black main characters wouldn't last a few episodes on a major network, unless all of the main black characters are criminals and they are being pursued by white folks, or the main black character is a palatable comedian that also pushes pudding pops.

Ha! I actually noticed a good-looking male zombie a couple of episodes ago.

They rarely cast attractive dudes as zombies, but it makes sense that at least some reanimated corpses would have started out farkable before the zombie apocalypse hit.

No, it's a net thing. You'll find it on a lot of Walking Dead boards. I think it's dumb but I get the point of the people who created the nick name (I liked O-Dog to describe his Replacement Token Neg.ro status, myself, but Two-Dog is more blatant about TWD's idiocy).

And I like Oscar. I just don't see any hope of seeing him stick around if they're going to introduce Tyreese.

And, of course, there's the fan speculation about what would happen if MORGAN came back.

Morgan and Tyreese in the same season or within episodes of each other, is that even possible, or would the TWD universe explode?

I'm mad tvtropes still doesn't have an entry for the One N@gg@ Rule. I guess the Token entry is doing double entry, even though what the One N@gg@ Rule represents is slightly different from mere tokenism.

Solid Muldoon: Seven percent of Americans are Black Men. Why do we expect fifty percent of TV characters to be Black men?

The show is based around Atlanta, Georgia. Don't go to Atlanta if you're expecting not to see a lot of black folk.

Like I said elsewhere, the show is implicit proof that survivors hook up with each other predominantly by race. Just like how everything else works in the real world. That's life.

We don't see the all-black, all-Latino, all-(insert Asian group), all-Indian groups (with smatterings of everyone else, making each other and whites the tokesn) on this show because this show is concerned with the all-white groups. And the one Latino group we did see got annihilated by one of the all-white groups.

WHY ARE THERE NO GAY CHARACTERS?!?!

2012-11-21 02:29:03 AM

TheLopper: Everyone always told me skin color shouldn't matter. Except when it does I guess.

It does matter. It matters so much that folks who have reported reading the comics before reading the show have noted that there's a major difference in how non-whites are treated in the comic versus how they're treated on the show.

In the comic, it really is more like 'people are people'. Tyreese is described as Rick's right hand, but not his lackey. In the comic, there is no 'Disagree with the Ricktatorship, Die' clause. So the question for fans becomes.... what will Tyreese's role be in the dynamic of the show, if Tyreese were introduced at this point?

Gays already got mad at that, over that particular change from comic to show. Doesn't bode well for the Alexandria storyline, if that comes to pass.

Bunk "fark, fark fark."
