I'm not buying the authenticity of this blog anymore, but I still like it and keep reading it anyway. If it's real, super cool. If it's not, it's still fun.

F*ck the NHL.

If I remember, I'll post this in every NHL thread from here on.

What I find interesting is that nobody really seems to care that the NHL is gone. TV sports nuts are watching basketcaseball, hockey fans are all going to AHL games, and everybody seems to be happy enough to not really give a crap about the NHL. And really, why should they?

Not enough AHL on tv. And way not enough OHL, damn that's fun hockey!

I may remind you that the NHL is where all the AHL guys are close enough to to taste the massive contract upgrade and the Major Jr. and College kids aspire to as well. Without the NHL, the motivation evaporates for these kids and that will very quickly kill minor hockey.

Gramps is there, I know, because he was awesome and because, like he said, "Killing them Krauts wasn't murder."

Great line. I always like these greenlights.

I had been busy and not checking in, I had to go back to day 56 to catch up from, there is some funny stuff since the last green, but it's been falling off since the upper decker dump.... And our boy that's "pretty good with his money" is less and less so as time goes by*

*yea I read the bit about the Winnebago costing him about a day's [!] salary from last year.

/I shoulda kept playing...

You don't know many hockey players, do you? Most AHL guys are playing because they like to play hockey and they make enough to pay the bills doing it. If they get a shot at the NHL great, but they all know it won't happen for most of them. Without the NHL though, the AHL is where it would be at, and money would naturally follow anyway. The motivation for kids would be redirected, not eliminated. As far as not enough AHL on tv goes, that is why I indicated a separation between sports nuts and hockey nuts. Sports nuts don't care what they watch, as long as they can do it from their ass. Hockey nuts don't care how far they have to drive, or in what kind of weather, to get to where they can watch a live hockey game. And if you think about it, not having AHL games on tv is working for the AHL right now, because game attendance is up. More butts in the seats is way better financially than more eyes on the tv anyway, so not having many AHL games on tv is actually a positive thing.

I used to know a few players, but we are all old and are widely scattered now.... The bit about the AHL guys being okay with playing in the AHL only happens once the NHL is clearly not going to happen. A few guys cut and run on that day, most go back to school and become some something else and play other guys that never even get that far on Tuesday nights, and one or two try and stay as close to the game as they can and bolt for Europe, or become coaches, trainers or agents. All players love the game however far they got up the ranks, and yea getting paid to play is cool, but getting paid A LOT is cooler.
About the AHL and TV, More butts is better, for now... I'm old enough to remember (just barely) local NHL black-outs unless the building was basically sold out. Eventually (read once TV revenue got big enough for the accountants to notice) they grew past that.
