Never heard of it either. Read the Wiki entry...noticed this at the bottom.

"Chess pie is closely related to vinegar pie, and the two terms are often used interchangeably. Vinegar pie generally adds somewhere between a teaspoonful and tablespoonful of vinegar to the above ingredients to reduce the sweetness. Some variations are called Jeff Davis or Jefferson Davis Pie"

Vinegar Pie?

Also never heard of strawberry pie...looks like strawberry shortcake, minus shortcake add crust

Rhubarb pie is horrible.

Who was the first person who looked to those weeds and thought they would be edible much less make a good pie? (I've always wondered about how certain dishes came into being)

/Granted, I may have only tasted horrible ones ...

Someone got me to try it for the first time last year. Not my favorite pie by any stretch of the means, but, I won't go as far as to call it horrible.

Me too! Especially fruit pies (I will kill for peach) and strawberry (why all the mystery about strawberry pie in this thread). Hell, I've even made a mulberry pie, but it's tough to get enough mulberries.

Did anybody else notice the info about making your own crust on the right side of the chart? The dollar amounts don't add up to $3.52 and the recipe includes both butter and shortening, but no flour. Not a good crust, I'm thinking.

Ice water and really cold butter are the keys to a flaky pie crust.

Blueberry and Apple for Thanksgiving. Mrs Fool makes awesome pie.

Guests might bring pumpkin pie, but I won't touch the stuff. Pumpkins are decoration, not food in my book.

And I agree with the statement above: "Why all the mystery about strawberry pie?" We make strawberry pie during strawberry season. I would not ruin it with those poisonous rhubarb things at all.

We had a mulberry tree in our back yard. Getting enough berries was easy as pie.

This is the only time of year I'll eat pumpkin pie. Give me a few heaping scoops of whipped cream and I'll eat a bunch of it.

For some reason any other time of the year and I can't stand pumpkin pie.

Also, I've lived in VA since 1996 and I've never heard of chess pie.

My CSS:

My family had never eaten pumpkin pie before, so for Thanksgiving my mom bought a small sugar pie pumpkin. I baked and scooped it out, made two huge pies and still had enough left over for soup. The adults loved it, but most impressive verdict came from my two younger cousins, 5 and 3 years old respectively. They tried a bite of the cheap apple pie my dad had bought from the supermarket made with hydrogenated soy oil, corn syrup and over processed apples, then my pumpkin pie made entirely from scratch. Both of them ate the pumpkin pie.

I almost always get suckered into making chess tarts for Thanksgiving and nobody touches the pumpkin pie because chess tarts are awesome. The filling is really rich so tarts have a better crust-to-filling ratio. Handmade crust is mandatory. My crust recipe uses 2.25c flour, 0.5c butter, 0.5c shortening, a dash of salt and ~6TBSP ICE water with as little kneading and rolling as possible so it doesn't get too tough. My filling is just a cup of white sugar, a cube of butter, two egg yolks and a whole egg cooked in a double boiler with constant stirring until it's brown but not gelatinous, then add a half cup of chopped walnuts and a half cup of raisins and cook a little longer. Pour in the shells and let them set up, no baking required. Hmm, maybe it's three egg yolks, it's been a year since I made any.

GreatGlavinsGhost: Rhubarb pie is horrible.

You shut your whore mouth. Rhubarb pie is wonderful. Last one I made had five lbs. of rhubarb and it was phenomenal.

And none of the strawberry garbage. Strawberries turn to nasty sludge when baked and ruin the texture of rhubarb.

FTFY. Replace half the water with vodak and your crust will be even better.

Pie is important to my family. I love all pie, I have yet to find one I'm not a fan of. I'd never heard of chess or vinegar pie though, but it sounds like pecan pie without the pecans, and what's the fun of that?? Shoofly, Rhubarb, Strawberry rhubarb, regular apple, german apple, pumpkin, pecan, cheesecake, blueberry, peach, strawberry, chocolate, pot pie, mincemeat pie, lemon meringue... my little sister runs a special order bakery called Pie and Other Irrational Baked Goods, because math jokes and delicious food are the kind of people we were raised to be.
