(Mashable)   What can you do with scrap metal, baking soda, and acid? If you're MacGyver, you probably blow something up, but if you're this kid from Sierra Leone, you power your family's home, set up your own radio station, and get a scholarship to MIT   (mashable.com) divider line 9

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: Nothing in there about a scholarship, subby. He just got invited to MIT.

This kid is impressive for his pro-activeness, but applied science just isn't as hard as the book work. It's not like he just invented this crap out of thin air.

Wow, what a first-world brat this makes you sound like. Where's your invite, asshat?

SevenizGud: And all of that to be a DJ. Nice. Just think, if he were born in the USA, say in Detroit or Philadelphia or New Orleans, he could still be a DJ, but also have the street cred that comes from having an aggravated assault conviction. Oh, you just can't underestimate the power of opportunity in this country. Too bad this kid is missing out on being all he can be.

And you're just a typical racist asshole. fark all of you naysayers. This kid deserves more than a life in a variable warzone.

Reminds me of the guy who built a windmill out of junk to charge his village's cell phones.

Oh, is that all?

This kid is impressive for his pro-activeness, but applied science just isn't as hard as the book work. It's not like he just invented this crap out of thin air.

Normally I'm all for bashing so-called prodigies labeled as such because they put together a kit car with ex-engineers working at a high school during their retirement, but this kid seems more to be the genuine article. He is living in some of the worst imaginable environments for innovation and positive action, and yet has avoided having his intellect stagnated and is seemingly doing his best to flourish. I'd say give the kid a scholarship right now and put together an additional stipend for one of his family members to be here to support him.

There are theorists out there, then there are tinkerers like Thomas Edison. This kid is a tinkerer. Hope the little genius keeps it up - who knows? He may be the one to make a farking warp drive.

Fark any of you haters.....as a small-market DJ (and consequently rudimentary engineer) I think this is awesome! I hope he really succeeds!

which GE would promptly steal from him and slap a patent on it so it could be sold to the highest bidder.

I would blow something up.

The Feds will now put me under surveillance for that comment.
