INeedAName: bionicjoe: Not drunk this week, but I'm still putting my Bengals in the playoffs. It would be the first time in 30 years they've made the playoffs in consecutive years.

The Bengals are in the same place as the hyped Saints, but the Bengals are in a weaker conference with an easier schedule.

Cowboys & @Pittsburgh are the tough games left and I still believe the Ravens will be resting in Week 17. Eagles, Chargers, & Raiders round out the schedule.

And no I don't believe in the Colts and never have.

/farking Miami loss

The Bengals definitely have an 'up-and-coming' vibe to me. As a Ravens fan, that worries me. We don't need three good teams in the division.

Don't worry, it will be just one in a year or two.

Forgot the playoff chart. But I would put it fairly low in the rankings, should rise rapidly over the next couple weeks as the picture really starts to form. Also, Harv's predictions #2. Otherwise I pretty much agree.

I know, there is a very specific set of circumstances that define a trap game, which results in only about 1 or 2 a week at most in the NFL. Just because the 4-5 Cowboys were playing the 2-7 Browns, everyone was thinking "trap game", but it just doesn't fit because the Cowboys were at home, plus they were only favored by 7 and the home team already gets 3, so really only a 4 point favorite at home. Definitely not a trap game. But, if you look at Bengals at Chiefs? Classic trap game.

At least in my mind, one of the teams needs to be over .500 for there to be a "trap" game. The only trap in this game was if you were trapped watching it.

Treygreen13: 2. Illegally kicking a ball out of bounds is a penalty of 10 yards and Loss of Down. This rule was changed this season to add the loss of down. I'm not sure why. If anyone can remember an occasion where a team illegally kicking a ball out of bounds benefited them lately, let me know.

I can't recall any particular scenario in an NFL game, but without the loss of down you could go for it on fourth, and if you won't make a first, just make an illegal kick to force a penalty, and then punt instead.
So you could make a legitimate attempt at a pass or on 4th down where the ball carrier/QB sees they won't make first down, so they do a quick kick. Or if you have a triple threat quarterback, you could line up in shotgun formation on 4th down to make it look like you're going for it, but then the QB could make a planned quick kick, or he could roll outside or toss a pitch which is then kicked by the ball carrier. I had one high school coach even toss out the idea of doing a quick kick on a 3rd and long situation where you knew you wouldn't get it, just to catch the defense off guard, and because you can always change to a pass/run depending on how the play develops.

Prior to the rule change, if one of these scenarios happened on 4th down, and the kick was illegal because either it was beyond the line of scrimmage when kicked, or any offensive players other than the two receivers on the end of the line of scrimmage went down field, you simply got backed up 10 yards, and then could make a legitimate punt. Essentially you got a free shot at 4th down conversions as long as the QB/RB had the thought to make an illegal kick to replay the down.

I can't recall the last time a quick kick happened in the NFL.....Jerry Glanville did it a few times with the Falcons but that was in like, 1992. literally twenty years ago. i somewhat recall one in college (and I think a bowl game at that) maybe a decade ago but....the NFL?

running to google....

Form wiki

Quick kicks are relatively rare in American football, but they have never completely disappeared. Quarterback Randall Cunningham made 20 quick kicks during his career, including one of the longest punts in NFL history, 91 yards, in 1989. [correction: while Cunningham occasionally did quick kick, this was not a quick kick. The Eagles' punter had been injured and it was a standard 4th down punt] [1]Bear Bryant was known to have used this on third downs when up big or as Kenny Stabler once said "I wanted to see how our defense could do". [2] Another, more recent example is that of Kellen Moore of Boise State University against Louisiana Tech on October 26, 2010, when Moore delivered a 54-yard punt. [3] New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady performed a quick kick punt on 3rd & 10 in the final quarter of a blowout against the Denver Broncos, in the divisional round of the AFC playoffs, on January 14th, 2012.[4]

wow. I have no memory of the Pats doing that, barely 10 months ago.

i'm certain glanville did that but wiki doesn't refelct it. ehh.

Not sure if it counts as a "quick kick", but Roethlisberger punted against the Bengals earlier this season. Link

I had forgotten about that too. But, Belicheck actually had a reason for doing it, he didn't want to run a punt as more people on teh line of scrimmage more chance for injury when you have won the last game of the regular season.

Some Donkeys were not impressed, though. And if you want to start a fight, don't do it on the sideline right in front of the other team's bench.

I would say it counts as a quick kick because, although it was on fourth down, it was essentially the same thing. An unexpected punt from a normal offensive formation (shotgun).

i would say no since "quick kick" (as far as i know, not defined by rule) means a kick when the defense is not expecting it, implying not on 4th down. i guess a 4th and, you know, 3 situation with QB in shotgun then punting could be termed a quick kcik, but....i still say no.

ultimtaely who cares.

having watched the Pats/Donks quick kick, i have no memeory of that. i can only think i must have turned the game off.
