If only there was some kind of device that could have offered an early warning to the smoke and fire. Someday, maybe someday ....

Barbara Tucker says she was walking down the hallway when she spotted smoke and flames around 7 a.m.

That's when she started yelling for her family, including her daughter's three-and half-year-old son and her 92-year-old father-in-law, to get out of the house.

"And I was screaming for my son and my husband and my daughter and her son to get out," Tucker said.

So all it takes to be a hero nowadays is a bit of screaming?

What would a normal, non-hero have done? Run out the door and left everyone to their fiery deaths?

2012-11-20 04:35:04 PM
I wonder if they asked her explicitly whether she wanted to be referred to as a mother or a grandmother in the opening paragraph of the story.

She's not a hero she's a Mom.

No, that takes about 10 cups and a few red bulls.

maybe an 1/8 of weed too...

The thing that really pisses me off here is that by saving everyone, she deprived Channel 6, WTVR, of an awesome lead story of death and mayhem. Really quite thoughtless of her.

I wonder if she experienced any internal conflicts about waking the family up.

they burn a lot of houses in this area too

That's kind of what I was thinking. A heroic action would be to run into someone else's burning house, risking your own life, to pull people out. Seeing your own house on fire and waking your own family members to get them out of the house is the bare minimum required to being a decent human being.

House fires suck.
I just got lucky when I saw the flames...outside on the front porch. By the time the smoke alarms started to go off I was already grabbing children and headed out the back.

/fire started by brother in law flinging a cigarette outside on a pile of dry leaves
//lost everything

Apparently she did that during the first cup of coffee.

I'm sure the smoke detectors weren't working. The batteries had been pulled out to power some stupid assed toy donated to the kids by Toy for Tots.

Do you now refer to said brother-in-law as Sir Dumbsh*t?

pounddawg: She's not a hero she's a Mom human.

Yelling when there is a fire is a standard human response. The only thing she did was yell, anyone would have done that. Who the hell tiptoes out of a house when there is a fire?

Also, the fire started in a trash can. Trash seldom just spontaneously combusts, this was likely a cigarette. No one else was awake. She might even be responsible for starting the fire. Some hero.

Pretty much what Nutsac_Jim said a few posts down. She started the garbage on fire.

What a hero!

"Lakeshia"

Seriously?

I dunno if it's heroic to yell when you see fire. I mean, what else would you do? I guess you could just silently run out of the house and go to a movie but that seems like a dick move.

from comments it seems many think everyone responds well to emergency situations. there are people who freak out and run amuck. some freeze like a statue in panic. some don't use so-called common sense and people die. so yes, Mom is a hero.

Might as well go for a soda
Nobody hurts and nobody cries
Might as well go for a soda
Nobody drowns and nobody dies

I caught sight of flames coming from someone's roof once, while driving by. I stopped and knocked on the door (before I owned a cell phone) and asked if they knew their house was on fire. They thought I was shiatting them. I had to convince the guy in his robe to come outside so he could see the roof line. He believed me then and hollered for someone to call the fire department. I got on with my grocery shopping trip. The next time I drove by there was a pretty good hole in the roof. I think I likely saved their house (electrical fire started in the attic, no smoke detectors there), but I didn't stick around for anyone to interview me.

/end of cool, but rather pointless story.

I think it's "more blessed" to not have your farking house catch on fire and nearly burn everyone to death.

"I think she's a hero, because she woke everybody up," Lakeshia Tucker, who escaped the flames, said.

So she's basically credited with the same behavior you hear about in "hero dog" stories? Alrighty, then.

Except the dog doesn't throw a butt in the waste bin and start the fire first.

The definition of hero has taken a big hit lately.

Also, why would you expect her to yell for everyone to get out--except for the 92-year-old and the three-year-old?

It happens. Throw a bunch of oily rags in a pile and it can generate enough heat to start burning.

Meh.
It's not like she would have just walked outside and sat there watching it burn.
Geesh, anyone in there right mind and half of those voting for Romney would have gotten everyone out of the burning house they were in.

Now if she ran across the street and saved the family sleeping in their burning house..., then I'd be saying "Hero".
