I got shot in my "Sikh temple" once. If you know what I mean.

If he really wanted to prove he's not a hero, he'd write a book and pimp it on Oprah.

Humility is a hallmark of heroism.

His comment about the shooter:

"And honestly I give him the least amount of thought possible. I don't want to give him any more power than he already took. I just don't. He doesn't deserve it."

If we all had that attitude towards these nutjobs.

God sure has a funny way of "divine intervention" - about 6 victims too late.

Inchoate: Guy's a hero.

Damn right he is. But, most of Fark will be loathe to admit it. I won't be surprised if we have some people come in and speak ill of him in one way or another.

Nah, he's Irish. The gunman was aiming for his head. Should have aimed some where more vital.

Seriously though, this man is a true hero. The more you read about this story more amazing it is. He literally absorbed bullets with his body so the gunman didn't hurt other people.

Here's some dash cam video of the incident

Dad's a white honest cop (stories from friends and strangers of "fairer than actual law" treatment) so I usually can't frequent these threads. I'm just so shocked that he was issued a revolver and endured this fight. Almost no capability of reloading in that frantic of an environment.

Getting shot doesn't necessarily make you a hero: sometimes it just makes you unlucky. But this guy put himself in danger to protect others even after getting shot multiple times, and that makes him a hero in my book.

FARK should figure out a way to send six packs to the deserving.

Let's be honest. The revolver was not his problem. It's pretty damn hard to reload any firearm while some is shooting you over and over again. The only way he wasn't going to get shot is if he walked out that squad car with a M60.

He must have known the score and did what he did anyway. The man is a real hero.

I am a believer and I don't think God provides "divine intervention". A man killed those 6 people - God had nothing to do with it, one way or another.

So you're saying it's rare for a white cop do do something heroic, thus Fark is confused?

Of course he's a hero. This is still old ass news.

2012-11-20 01:46:21 PM
If the shooting had been at a "christian" church I have a hard time believing the religious bigots here would be calling him a hero. Also missing are the snide why didn't jebus block dem bullets.

2012-11-20 01:48:02 PM
Surprised he didn't just crush the shooter with his giant brass balls.

You're damn right, I was saying its even more impressive. Having a glock with 3 times as many bullets and a reloading function that takes a fraction as long has helped law enforcement and I can't believe that weapons like that aren't standard.

It was not literal in the "absorbing" sense, as the bullets were actually forced into his body by the gun. It was also not "literal" in the "so the gunman didn't hurt other people" sense, as at this point the cop had no clue that his actions were saving lives.

He's still a hero though.

This impact would have been such that the guy would have exploded into a fine red mist, thus eliminating the possibility of investigation/identification. The cop was thinking ahead.

His courage stemmed in part from being a government employee and union member with a pension and benefits who he knows he'll be provided for no matter what happens.

If he'd been a private contractor, he would have been thinking "shiat! I've been shot! I'm going to lose my job and not be able to pay the hospital bill! I ain't going out for $12 an hour... Screw this, man."

You could not be more wrong on this point.

I have been in his shoes. I have advanced upon a shooter in a sniper attack upon innocent civilians.

The whole time I was advancing upon the shooter all that was going through my mind was, "when I get to him I have to take the shot immediatley, because if I hesitate and he squeezes off even one more round, that could be someone's life".

Lucky for me, LAPD pulled up and he dropped his rifle just as I got to him. I didn't have to pull the trigger, however, I know I wouldn't have hesitated because I knew people's lives were at stake.

Shocked I'm not seeing more cop hate in this thread. There is no profession that suffers from more sweeping generalizations than law enforcement.

That being said, I'd like to think that if I was ever faced with this type of situation, I'd react with even an iota of the balls this guy showed.

Hope I never have to.
