I'm a liberal. But due to my limited education, I don't really have tons of options. I'm stuck here. Not that I'm complaining, much. I'd probably hate living in another country anyway. Would be too much of a culture shock. With maybe the possible exception of Canada... maybe.

Yes, because this year we were so overwhelmed by liberal hyperpartisanship that every single pollster thought the liberals would sit at home on election day, cheering so hard they forgot to vote.

See? This is where you guys start to look a little unhinged. What have the House GOP majority actually accomplished in terms of legislation? They are the least productive Congress in 65 years. That's not partisan to point out. That's acknowledging reality. They couldn't even pass the farking Jobs for Veterans bill, or the Violence Against Women Act, or the Farm bill, or the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

The leadership has sunk 1.5 million dollars into defending DOMA. Of the roughly 3,000 bills they have put to a vote, how many of those were about abortion and the names of bridges? And how many laws did they actually pass? 60 something. The worst record in my lifetime.

How is pointing this out partisan? Or should no American dare to question the effectiveness of their government when their government is the one you voted for? Because that would be "partisan"? No absolutely. I'm the partisan.

The article mentions that: MSNBC has to do something that will keep increasing their audience.

But the thing is that is noticeable is that MSNBC has been winning for two weeks...normally their bump just last election night.

I can tell you why: FOX has always been about a conservative veiwpiont while claiming to be fair.

You cannot be fair and have a viewpoint.

As a result: after 20 years of holding to a point of view- that was completely void of reality- people are looking for a place to find a reliable source of information.

They won't get it from a liberal minded media.

UH - that's not what this is about. It was inevitable that the swing to the extreme right in America would end - the only question was when. This is encouraging evidence that it has begun. It actually seems a little ahead of schedule to me - not enough boomers have started kacking yet, by my reckoning. But there are other factors involved, and hey - if we're getting there already, great. Try to remember that folks like me don't agree with you - we think this change is GOOD for the country. I can't speak for anyone else, but if I didn't think it was, I wouldn't be happy about it. You can tell me I'm wrong, but you have no reasonable basis upon which to call me insincere.

It's not about who's winning, it's about making sure that people get correct information about the world around them so that, when we try to address problems that arise, we at least have the same groundwork upon which to debate the proper remedy to that problem. We don't have that right now, because Fox news is lying to the people who watch it. Flat out, telling people things that are demonstratively untrue, like, that Romney was going to win in a landslide. Like scientists are all in major scan regarding global climate change. Like, Liberals hate real Americans, that Obama is a treasonous communist/fascist who wants to destroy the country. These untruths poison the political discourse and make it impossible to address problems because, 1) they deny the problems exist, and 2) even if problems exist, Republicans cannot work with treasonous Democrats to solve the problems because Democrats are evil.

The election was the first time I've ever heard my father, a Fox news junkie, admit that Fox news fed them a line of provable BS. For the first time, my father doubts that Fox is giving them the truth, and that is a good thing. And that is why I celebrate when Fox loses viewers, because that means people may start to turn to real sources of information and make it possible for Americans to come together again to address issue they all face.

It all makes sense now...

Neo-Nazis use the number 88 as a code to represent the slogan Heil Hitler. The letter H is eighth in the alphabet, so 88 is meant to stand for HH. The number is sometimes used in combination with the number 14 (e.g. 1488 or 14/88). In this context, the number 14 stands for the "Fourteen Words", which is a white nationalist slogan created by convicted terrorist David Lane. Examples of usage include: the song "88 rock'n'roll band" by the neo-Nazi band Landser, and the names of the groups Column 88, Unit 88, White Legion 88 and Barselc88. Holocaust museum shooter James von Brunn often signed his writings as "JVB-88."

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea has no taxes on its citizens, so it really is the Best Korea! And it has "Democratic" right in the name, so it's probably a true, direct democracy!

RyogaM: Happy Hours: Interesting, but I'm still disturbed that most of you treat this as a college football rivalry. Woohoo!!!!! The liberals are winning!!! Take that Fox News!.

Maybe we should care more about our country than we do about our political affiliation.

Yeah, I couldn't care less that MSNBC is doing well. I never watch it, or cable news of any sort unless I'm stuck in a lobby with one of them on. People that watch MSNBC are a bit incorrigible, if well meaning from the conversations I've had. People that watch Fox are downright stubbornly misinformed. I left the Republican party because of the damage I could see ClearChannel and Fox doing to our collective psyche with their flagrant militarism and brash disregard for civil liberties and the truth.

Its a very good thing for them to be failing. It means there might be some hope that in a few years, we might have more than one major party worth voting for. I want a CHOICE when I go into the voting booth, between at least two (ideally more) viable candidates with a believable plan to improve our nation. This past few elections the choice had been made for me by the people that drove the Republican train off the cliff. I'm glad they finally hit bottom, and the conductors are dying a slow death, now its time to piece the party back together from the wreckage and make it relevant for the 21st century...

I love how social conservatives are, by definition, always going to lose. There has never been a time in history when socially excepted norms and customs were held constant for a sustained period. They have always been in a state of change. To fight for social conservatism is simply asking for a lifetime of being on the losing side, and also asking for history to remember you alongside all the other oppressive farkheads that history threw in the dustbin.

Excellent concept and I generally would agree under normal circumstances and have voted split ticket many times in the past. Unfortunately in my opinion the way the GOP has operated, created their "echo chamber", and condemned those with differing viewpoints; out of love of country they forced me to take a side. Since what they seem to stand for represents many things I do not stand for, I had to choose the "team" which does seem to. The third party options are not options in my book since they seem to go more to extremes than to the center.

Maybe if stuff like this continues and FOX loses its ability to fuel the hyperpartisan flames, causing conservatism to go back to what it was during the time of Eisenhower; well then I will come back to considering voting for Rep[ublican candidates.

Wow. Honestly, I feel that both channels suck and (when I have cable) will only watch either of them for entertainment purposes only. My only guess would be the depressions that I'm certain most conservatives are feeling right now. I'm almost curious enough to get in touch with and see if my parents are still watching FOX 24/7. These are both incredibly smart people and I sincerely didn't understand how or why they were falling for the obvious tripe and had been hoping for some blatant "Math you do as Republicans" bite for them to stop drinking the kool-aid. Unfortunately, they burned many more bridges than simply political.

Olbermann was awesome. Things have changed - guy's teetered too far in one direction, and I fear he's fallen over. Shame, really, I am still fond of him.

Meanwhile, Sharpton is a topic on which I'm torn. On the one hand, when he argues that Obama didn't run as the President Who Would Fix Things For Black People, he's right, and deserves points for being realistic about it. When he brings attention to an issue of institutionalised racism leading to black people being shot in the streets and their killers being let go, he's criticized as if he's the one in the wrong for making noise about it, and I think he did the right thing there.

And yet...

And yet...

Hitch said it about Falwell, and said it again, later, about Sharpton: "He woke up every morning, as I say, pinching his chubby little flanks and thinking, I have got away with it again." So, like with many people, I imagine there's more to Al Sharpton than just one or two issues.

Keith Olbermann CAN be awesome when he's not doing his stonefaced, call-everybody-he-disagrees-with-"SIR", Edward R. Murrow wannabe act. He has moments of awesome that he just totally buries with his own elevated sense of himself. I'd be all about putting him back on the air, but only if they make him hold a thick wad of dollar bills through the whole hour and put a Douche Jar on his desk, with a guy standing in the background to strictly enforce it.

Also, kudos to MSNBC for releasing Olbermann in the first place for violating a journalistic standard. Even if I do sorta want to like the guy, that was the right move.

This is true although there are indications that the US is in some ways at least starting to become more liberal than Australia. For example, there is no way marijuana will be legalized in Australia any time soon - until it happens in the US anyway.

Apart from that the US appears to be two countries at the moment, each struggling for dominance over the other. One of those countries is moderately liberal while the other is very conservative to the point of being regressive even oppressive. Sort of like a psuedo-Christian version of Iran.

I'm a liberal. But due to my limited education, I don't really have tons of options. I'm stuck here. Not that I'm complaining, much. I'd probably hate living in another country anyway. Would be too much of a culture shock. With maybe the possible exception of Canada... maybe.

Despite all of your horrible problems at the moment I would love to live in the USA. It's where all the action is - if the countries of the world were all cities then the US would be New York City while Australia would be an anonymous, dull middle class suburb of some nice but dull city.

Our country does not exist in a non-partisan vacuum.

Besides, not to get all sociological about this, but the enjoyment of supporting rival sports team probably comes from the human tendency to do things like form groups based on common experience and future plans, not vice versa.

No, not really. You were there in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. The current anti-immigration policies are pretty nasty. Sentiment towards Aboriginal population remain pretty ugly. And the people are more like sheeple when it comes to bending over and taking it from the banks and other corporate powers. There's a great deal to like about Australia but "redneck" culture is rather pervasive, and not just in in the North and West. But there's some hope. You only seem to be about 20 years behind in social evolution.

When one visits Uluru, and the local rangers tell visitors that climbing Ayers Rock is not something the traditional owners like you get interesting reactions. Germans pretend they did not understand and climb because that's what they wanted to do. Canadians are usually polite and go have a beer instead. Americans split between the two. Australians go ahead and climb without pretending they didn't understand.

Good news is that just this week, it became illegal to ask a female job applicant if they planned to have children soon. The scary thing is that this is perceived to be a mark of being progressive as opposed to being late to the table.

My great uncle Msgr. Joseph Harnett, has said that he "prays for faith every day". I also did not understand that when I was a lad. I asked him if he had no faith, who did he think he was praying to? He seemed charmed at once by my reasoning and naiveté. I knew then he was a man of tremendous joy and later learned of his sense of duty, responsibility and justice. During the Vietnam war he met with the Vietnamese leaders of both sides using his ability to act as liaison to plead them find solutions to stop the fighting. He also drove many refugees from the North through military barricades, pedal to the floor, heads down, taking gunfire. Later in his life he ran Catholic Relief Charities from his office in the Vatican. From there and in the field he worked alongside Mother Theresa (herself an atheist who aspired to be a person of faith) to feed, clothe and bring medicine to needy people around the world. He worked in that capacity until his death. I was in the military when Joseph died. The American Red Cross personally contacted me, had me temporarily relieved from active duty and flown to be at his funeral. That's a lotta cheddar for someone who "aspires to be a person of faith". (csb?)

In network TV world, "ratings" means the 18-49 demo. The young and the old don't matter much to most advertisers (only the niche products like toys and boner pills). And FOX has had a stranglehold on the 18-49 for years and it's significant that it seems to be eroding away. FOX could be in trouble when the boomers go bye bye if they can't get the younger generations tuned in when they get old.

A strongly theocratic country in which religious leaders rule over the country to promote holy moral values, that follow strong conservative values, promote the use of oil, love having a strong military, virtually no taxes on the people, and an outright ban on abortion. Yep, Iran is the perfect country for these groups.

I'd like to think that Faux News blatantly lying to its audience about the last election would prove to their viewers that they lie about EVERYTHING, and thus people are turning them off. But I'm sure there's a much dumber explanation for this, like half their audience forgot how to turn dur teevees on.

I'm pretty meh on MSNBC. Rachel Maddow's show is great but that's pretty much the only MSNBC I expose myself to, and that's only because it's available in podcast form on Stitcher. Anytime I've ever tried to tune in during a live news event (the debates, the elections, the conventions) it's insufferable.

Fox is hated because they're dishonest. If they were right wing but didn't make up bullshiat all the time, they would be less hated. They're cartoonishly manipulative which makes them by far the most fun to watch during live news events.

I can't speak for others, but it's impossible for me to be truly Christian. Sometimes, but not always, I'd like to replace the cold reality of skepticism with the warm ignorance of faith, certain in that my family, my friends, and I get to live in paradise forever. I think it would take a pretty hefty restructuring of my brain's processes, or some substantive evidence, for that to actually occur.

Fox still has the ratings advantage, but imagine what would happen if MSNBC could put up a moderate, sensible host who doesn't talk about Benghazi for 60 minutes? MSNBC's hosts are just as much a joke as Fox's. I personally think that both networks are trying to grab ratings from subgroups of viewers who are stupid and make poor decisions. Hannity gets the middle-aged but low intelligence white malish crowd, Greta gets the old women, Maddow gets younger women with poor judgment, etc.

2012-11-21 03:13:27 AM
Didn't mean to imply MSNBC talks about Benghazi, but I did mean to imply that the hosts are nowhere near moderate, and the network could conceivably provide a legitimate alternative to FNC.

2012-11-21 05:49:02 AM
I've never quite understood the "MSNBC IS JUST AS BAD AS FOX" line of thinking. No, they're not. They don't even do the same thing, aside from the 24 hour news cycle BS. Fox exists solely, all day, every day, as a right-wing spin machine. MSNBC acts as an actual news network for most of the day and provides progressive (read: based in reality) opinion programming at night.

The "you have to show both sides!" dichotomy in America is nonsense because one of the sides that you're supposed to (I'm looking at you, NPR) is constantly projectile vomiting nonsense into the air. Just because "two sides" of an issue exists doesn't mean that they're inherently entitled equal footing in the public sphere just because they exists. What happened to letting facts dictate the reality that the media presents?
