Sagus: According to MSNBC's Mara Schiavocampo "that long-range rockets carrying warheads weighing between 20 and 90 kilograms - 46 to 198 pounds - aren't actually dangerous to human life." So no worries right?

Wow. Mara's either a sheltered first-world dimwit, or she's doing a spectacular job of toeing that party line.

Tatsuma: Updates of the last 24 hours

Thank you for the updates. They're a refreshing change of pace from the name-calling, slogan chanting, and hyperbole usually contained in these threads.

Tatsuma: Updates of the last 24 hours
not a comprehensive list, but rather some items
that might be missed and few major items as well

Within the last hour

- Hamas: Ceasefire within hours
- Israel: No ceasefire happening
- Again, volley of rockets fired at Southern Israel as I write this
- Awaiting joint press conference from Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the Egyptian government
- Basically what has been happening for the last two three hours:
IDF leaflet to Gazans: "If you leave in the Northern and Eastern areas, evacuate and go to the center of Gaza city"
Hamas television to Gazans: "No need to worry, stay home"
Most Gazans: 'Yeah, fark that, we're going to Gaza city"

Last 24 hours

- Syrian soldiers once again fired at Israeli soldiers, Israel to file a complaint at the UN
- A hundred rockets or so were fired today
- 10,000 more soldiers have been called up by the Knesset, meaning that 70,000 soldiers are now ready to invade Gaza. In comparison, 10,000 soldiers fought during Operation Cast Lead
- Ban Ki Moon and Hillary Clinton are in Israel to discuss peace
- Many riots in Judea and Samaria
- Hamas: We will kidnap soldiers if you invade Gaza
- Man with a pitchfork attacked US Embassy guard, gets shot in the knee
- Erdogan: 'Israel is a murderous terrorist states'; orders more attacks on Kurds in Iraq after killing 44 in the last three days
- Death toll in Gaza stands at 126, about a quarter of them civilians.
- Hamas has executed at least 10 since the beginning of the conflict for being 'israeli informers'

Obviously Fearless Leader is trying to recapture his Troll Role from the Iran Revolution Threads!

/Good luck with that, Settler

Dow Jones and the Temple of Doom: bluelancer03: Step 1: Redesign the Iron Dome intercept system to redirect the trajectory of rockets and mortars back into Gaza.

Problem solved. No further steps required.

So murdering innocent Gazan children is fine by you?

So israeli children are fair game? Israel only targets rocket installations. Hamas however is just as happy with dead Jews. In a fair war the objective is to eliminate your enemys ability to wage war. Not to kill people. Explain that to all of your liberal friends and tell them to tell their al Qaeda buddies and maybe we'll solve this problem.

Mr.Sharpy: This is a pretty radical idea, but I'm going to say it anyway. Obviously, this region causes nothing but trouble. It has for millennia. It doesn't matter who holds the territory at any given time, someone else always feels like they have an entitlement to it and is willing to kill for it. These conflicts and tensions spill out into the wider world and make every one of us less safe. Just look at our history. This land has been made figuratively uninhabitable by the blood of a hundred cultures spilled upon it.

I believe that a coalition of world powers should come together, and agree that this land is too contentious, because of its history, for anyone to hold. Every man, woman, child, dog, cat and goat should be evacuated and absorbed into the rest of the world, and then we render Israel and Gaza literally uninhabitable. Salt the earth there. Make it so that no one may set foot within its former borders without dying for a thousand years.

I know that it's the holy land for multiple cultures, but the locality of that is irrelevant. It's the ideas that those locations represent that are important to your religion, and you will get over it.

It's not about land. It's about killing Jews. Not that I care about land or Jews particularly, but I do feel that Jews should be able to DEFEND themselves by any means nessasary. The whole land argument is for the media so the Arabs can get away with it.

Wow. If I'd have a defense system that only worked 1/3 of the time- I'd ask for my money back...

if I had a choice between wearing a bullet-proof-resistant vest that only stopped 33% of bullets and not wearing any protection at all, I'd wear the vest.

I don't know shiat about this iron dome system, but from what others have said in this thread it sounds like it's a little more that 33% effective,.

What's really ridiculous is you using this kind of hyperbole when the real thing is happening just next door in Syria.

Yeah; it's pretty easy to get down on Israel. They have a less than stellar human rights record, and they don't seem to be interested in improving it. And the idea of a any state founded on a religious identity is downright offensive to western conscience in the 21st century.

But the truth is that Israel still better than 75% of the nations in the world, including most of their mid-east neighbors. Does anyone in the whole world imagine that Israel has a worse human rights record than Syria? Worse than Iran? Worse than Saudi Arabia?

Even Egypt has been accused of recent ethnic cleansing of Coptic Christians. Why is Israel front page news on every newspaper in the whole world, while nobody really cares about Egypt right now?

And, even though the very idea of a nation state based on a religion is deeply offensive to me, and should have been thrown into the dustbins of history a hundred years ago, can anyone really say that Israel is worse in this regard than many of its neighbors? Yes, it's deeply offensive to every westerner that Israel uses some holy book to pretend like it has some sort of divine providence. But, what you see in places like Saudi Arabia and Yemen are infinitely worse. Why don't we see an article every day on the front page of the New York Times that says "United States Ally Saudi Arabia Still a Repressive Monarchy; Won't Even Let Women Drive."

Finally, can anyone really say that Israel is worse at dehumanizing its enemies than the countries around it? Sure, a lot of people in Israel sure do seem to dehumanize Palestinians, and justify collective punishment and all sorts of other truly vile things. In fact, you can probably find people from Israel come up with justifications for genocide right here on fark. But compared to placed like Iran, Israel is a shining city on the hill. Would anyone ever claim that what the Iranian government officially says to dehumanize all of Judaism is somehow worse than what Israelis say about Muslims? Not even close.

Look, there are a lot of polititicians in Israel who have my contempt in the same way that Rick Santorum has my contempt. They're slimey little sleazeballs that use religion to justify things that are morally wrong, and they need to be voted out of office. But there are politicians in Saudi Arabia and Iran who have my contempt in the same way that Pinochet or Pal Pot have my contempt. Most of the upper level of Iran or Saudi Arabia's government don't need to be voted out; they need to go in front of a trial in the Hague.

Oh bullshiat.

The siege on Gaza is collective punishment - Israel doing everything it can get away with to make the lives of the Pallies as miserable as possible.

Prior to June, 2010 when international pressure FORCED Israel to loosen the straps on its jackboots, these were some of the items that Israel banned from Gaza - you know, to allow the Zionists to "defend themselves":

sage
cardamom
coriander
ginger
jam
halva
vinegar
nutmeg
chocolate
fruit preserves
seeds and nuts
biscuits and sweets
potato chips
gas for soft drinks
dried fruit
fresh meats
plaster
tar
wood
cement
iron
glucose
industrial salt
plastic/glass/metal containers
industrial margarine
tarpaulin sheets
fabric (for clothing)
flavor and smell enhancers
fishing rods
fishing nets
buoys
ropes
nylon netting for greenhouses
hatcheries and spare parts for hatcheries
spare parts for tractors
dairies for cowsheds
irrigation pipe systems
planters (for saplings)
heaters
musical instruments
size A4 paper (letter/legal size)
writing implements
notebooks
toys
razors
sewing machines
horses
donkeys
goats
cattle
chicks

TheTrashcanMan: If the shoe was on the other foot I imagine things would be VERY different.

Darth_Lukecash: Wow. If I'd have a defense system that only worked 1/3 of the time- I'd ask for my money back...

Beeblebrox: From what I read on Fark, it's not designed to shoot all of them down. It's only designed to intercept ones that are headed for populated areas. At that, it works pretty damn well.

Mr.Sharpy: I understand that the radars that power Iron Dome determine if the trajectory of a rocket will take it to a populated area, and it selectively engages those only. Everything else is allowed to pass through.

smitty04: It only shoots down the ones that are on course to hit a populated area. 90% hit rate on those.

taliesinwi: Actually it doesn't bother shooting down rockets that aren't going to hit areas it cares about. Those missiles cost $100K per and they're not going to waste them on rockets that are going to splash down a mile out to sea. That's why its success rate is north of 85% for rockets it actually has to defend against.

Wettner: This is correct. There was a NY Post article, I think posted on Fark, that explains this exact fact. The Iron Dome targets missiles and rockets headed toward more populous areas of Israel. Each interceptor costs 30-40k so they have to balance the difference between life and missiles.

Fark power!

Can you cite a specific "farkball" claiming that a specific explosion in Gaza was due to an Israeli bomb, and then cite evidence of that same explosion actually being due to a misdirected rocket?

Or are you just one of those people who likes to imagine what "farkballs" say, and then pretend to the world that the the imaginary conversations that you had in your head involved real people?

Tatsuma: Updates of the last 24 hours

...

- Erdogan: 'Israel is a murderous terrorist states'; orders more attacks on Kurds in Iraq after killing 44 in the last three days

While that's not a surprising comment coming from Erdogan, here's the aftermath of that strike it seems, FWIW:

"Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed regret Friday for the killing of 35 Kurdish civilians in an air strike as mourners vented their fury and rebels called for an uprising.

As locals buried their dead, Erdogan admitted that the victims of Wednesday night's attack near the Iraqi border were smugglers and not separatist rebels as the army had originally claimed.

The military also offered its condolences on Friday in a rare gesture that appeared to acknowledge its error, but neither it nor Erdogan were able to assuage the sense of grief among locals.

Speaking to journalists in Istanbul, Erdogan voiced his regret for what he called an "unfortunate and distressing" incident."

These innocent people killed in the airstrike are a true tragedy, instigated by Turkey. That being said, the PKK are similar to the FARC and don't really deserve much sympathy (at least from me) and I understand why Turkey was looking to hit them, just like we (the US) do with drone strikes on Taliban and al-Qaeda - those kill the wrong people sometimes too.

If that happened from one of the small payloads that Hamas can manage to get into the hardware store pipes that they're lobbing at Israel, you might want to talk to your building inspectors. Someone is on the take.

I don't know. I imagine that 5 to 10 lbs of high explosives could cause that.

Wikipedia says 5-20kg depending on Qassam model. So I could definitely believe that kind of damage.

BigNumber12: Amos Quito: Everyone hoped for "change" when he was deposed, but I was not so optimistic: The fact that Israel wasn't SHIATTING BRICKS during the "revolution" (lol) told me that this was merely a CIA/Mossad controlled "changing of the guard". Mubarak was getting OLD and could croak at any time. Better a "controlled burn" than a wildfire.

Sometimes it's hard to believe that you're being serious.

Don't forget the truck-launched Fajr-5 (supplied by Iran). Range of up to 75km, with 90kg of explosives in the warhead.

So does that mean that they will have to move their accounts to the East Bank?

A bunch of fertilizer in a coffee can with a nail and a shotgun shell for a detonator against that much reinforced concrete? I guess it's possible, but it seems unlikely. Most of the photos you see of the aftermath of a Qassam, they've managed to crack a few two-by-fours, break some glass out of some windows, and knock down some ceiling tiles.

Of course, the original poster was talking about the Iranian supplied rockets, which actually have real HE warheads and real detonators. That is a different story entirely. I stand corrected.

give me doughnuts: Amos Quito: Kind of sounds like the Warsaw Ghetto, doesn't it?

Also sounds like SOMEONE hasn't learned a damn thing from their own history.

I don't recall the Germans supplying the Warsaw Ghetto with water, electricty, and daily convoys of food and medical supplies. I also don't recall the Germans treating sick and wounded Polish Jews in German hospitals.

Are you suggesting that the people of Gaza are ungrateful for the "gifts" that the humanitarian and philanthropic Zionist Regime *showers* on them?

give me doughnuts: I also don't recall the Warsaw Ghetto firing daily barrages rockets and mortar shells into the rest of Warsaw.

Did the residents of the Warsaw ghetto have access to rockets and mortar shells with which to pummel their tormentors?

No?

Folks tend to make do with what they have. See the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

History repeats - sort of.
