StrandedInAZ: HellRaisingHoosier: Dwight_Yeast: KarmicDisaster: He will come back having spent 200 on just food and say that it is "easy" and "a luxury".

Unlikely.

/not sure what the details are, but I live alone and spend less than $200/week on food.
//more like $60-80/week

There is no way a human can sustain a healthy diet on $60-80 a week. Especially a teenager or young adult with their high metabolism.

Are you serious? I spend quite a less than this in a week. I eat mostly fruits, veggies, and fish.

This is why I give you a pass on the "stranded" part of your fark handle. (Your being a self-respecting bleeding-heart liberal black lesbian part doesn't hurt.)

Because you can cook.

I believe one of my wife's friends get food stamps and gets about $125/mo. Just saying.

The word "part" does not belong there.

Sorry.

Man, I wish I was on food stamps. Then I'd be able to eat all the fatty foods I want, and not gain a pound! Thanks, Obama

mrshowrules: Shrugging Atlas: I liked how he was letting people just hang out at his house after Sandy...letting them use the power to charge cellphones and whatnot.

There was something about that....well beyond just your typical "I'm doing this for the PR/Political impact."

He helped a young family fix up his garage and is letting them stay there until they get back on their feet. There youngest boy Theo (4 years old) had a speech impediment. Booker diagnosed him as having a hearing impairment and taught him basic sign language; spent a whole night talking with the father and got him to give up his drinking addiction and taught the mother some mindfulness mediation techniques to deal with her pain management until he can find a cure for her condition.

so he's also Batman?

Really? You think that people on the SNAP program get $200 a WEEK to spend on food?

It's $204 a month max in NYC. Yup, I was on that a while ago.

You know what the cash assistance is for a single person? $175 twice a month. In NYC.

They do give you metrocards to go to interviews though. And they are damn good at finding anything and everything you can do. HRC followed up with me twice, and the guy sounded happier than my family did when I told him I found a job.

Dr Dreidel: DeaH: The guy tweets Plutarch. I'm a fan.

He's one of the ones that has The Bible (Old and New), Koran, Bhagavad Gita, and other holy texts on his bookshelf. One of the few who actually knows what's in them, too.

// wonder if he's got Lovecraft, Dawkins and the FSM guy's sketch as well

With the exception of the Koran, so do I. Even funnier, I have a book called "Bringing God to the Dinner Table" and right next to it is a Christopher Hitchens book. I'm dead serious.

Summoner101: Is it just me or is a week on food stamps pretty weak?

He should try it for a month. My girlfriend gets about $175 per month. Neither of us eat breakfast, I eat lunch, and then we both eat dinner. Thanks to the overinflated food prices it lasts us maybe two weeks. Before we were together it lasted only a little more thna two weeks. She used to have to get her elderly parents to buy her food (she is disabled), and now I buy the difference.

It's not easy. It's not extravagent. It's not fun.

You sound priveleged. Not everyone has lots of free time to exercise religiously. What with having to work lots of overtime, two or three jobs, take care of the crotchfruit as poor folks are wont to have, et cetera.

Not everyone can win the lottery like you. Instead of crowing about how awesome you are you could maybe practice some humility that clawing with all your might doesn't still leave you at the bottom of the income ladder.
