My opinions:

1) 'Silver Linings Playbook' - No thanks.
2) 'Life of Pi' - Looks weird, like some kind of surreal imagery type deal. Might Redbox it.
3) 'Red Dawn' - fark off.
4) 'Rise of the Guardians' - *shrug* Not really in the mood for kid flicks these days.
5) 'Hitchcock' - I'm actually interested in this one.
6) 'Killing Them Softly' - Hmmm.. I'll pass.
7) 'Playing for Keeps' - Not in the mood for chick flicks.
8) 'Hyde Park on Hudson' - I'm a sucker for period pieces with any kind of remotely accurate historical relevance. Also, Laura Linney, she's awesome. I might Redbox this.
9) 'Stand Up Guys' - No thanks.
10) 'The Hobbit' - YES. YES! YEEEEEEESS! I rarely go to the theater anymore as it is, but I will SO endure a midnight showing for this.
11) 'The Guilt Trip' - Seth Rogen, as cute as he is, his schtick is getting old.
12) 'Monsters, Inc 3D' - I loathe this 3D fad.
13) 'Zero Dark Thirty' - Sounds propaganda-ish.
14) 'On the Road' - No thanks.
15) 'Jack Reacher' - Uhhh, no thanks.
16) 'This Is 40' - Pass.
17) 'Django Unchained' - I like Tarantino. I think I'll redbox this.
18) 'Les Miserables' - Anne Hathaway's performance in the trailer alone makes me want to go to the theater for this.
19) 'Parental Guidance' - No thanks.
20) 'Promised Land' - Pass.
21) 'Quartet' - Maggie Smith would be the main reason why I'd go see this.

Hobbit, Guardians, and Les Mis for me.

I've seen so many different versions of Les Mis I'm over it. BUT I know I'm gonna have to see it since I talked my girlfriend into watching the original Red Dawn last night (I was getting tired of seeing "WOLVERINES!" jokes fly over her head). Now I owe her.

I can't farking wait for Hitchcock.

Silver Lining Playbook--Never heard of it
Life of Pi--husband wants to see it. Said he read it as a kid (I never heard of it)
Red Dawn--MAYBE, but only to keep up w/my jingoist, Teabagger brothers
Rise of the Guardians--No
Hitchcock--I only saw the trailer for this last week. Didn't know it was coming out. Hopkins as Hitchcock? Oh, definitely must see.
Killing Them Softly--Never heard of it
Playing For Keeps--Never heard of it
Hyde Park on Hudson--Never heard of it
Stand Up Guys--Never heard of it
The Hobbit--MOST DEFINITELY!
The Guilt Trip--Sounds like a bad romcom. No way
Monsters Inc. 3D--No. Loved it the first time but there's no need to see it in 3D
Zero Dark Thirty--No
On the Road--No
Jack Reacher--No
This is 40--I like Seth Rogen and I end up liking Apatow's movies more than I should. Probably rentable.
Django Unchained--Tarantino, SLJ, and Christoph Waltz? Absolutely!!
Les Miserables--Maybe, but only because I like Anne Hathaway
Parental Guidance--I don't need to watch Billy Crystal try to recapture his "Harry Met Sally" days. Pass.
Promised Land--great cast. Probably rentable
Quartet--Never heard of it

I think most of us are going to agree that The Hobbit is a 'most definitely!'

I believe its working title was, "Here, Fellas, Look at Jennifer Lawrence's Cleavage to Distract You During This Awful Chick Flick." Truth be told, it was a rather clumsy title.

Where most commercial releases are concerned, the use of the "must see" phrase in its promotion is an indicator of movie suckage.

Why did they have to cast non-dwarfs for The Hobbit? Nobody could find 13 decent real dwarf actors? They pulled the same shenanigans with Snow White and The Huntsman.

Les Miserables and The Hobbit. The rest seems like hogwash...

Because Tolkien dwarfs aren't the same as "real dwarfs"?

You may as well be asking why they didn't cast real elves to play the elf characters...

Silver Lining Playbook--Ridiculously good looking people with serious mental problems, pass
Life of Pi--CGI fest with an important life message, pass
Red Dawn--Fark you
Rise of the Guardians--No kids
hiatchcock--Must see, likely Oscar contender
Killing Them Softly--I'm intrigued, especially with Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) directing
Playing For Keeps--Oh boy, another rom-com starring Leonidas
Hyde Park on Hudson--Bill Murray as FDR? Hmmm, I'll have to see some reviews first
Stand Up Guys--Pacino, Walken, and Arkin, definitely maybe
The Hobbit--Yep
The Guilt Trip--I'm starting to get a little worn out on Seth Rogen, and the trailer I saw this weekend was way too cutesy
Monsters Inc. 3D--Don't care about the 3D
Zero Dark Thirty--Nope
On the Road--I've already seen the good parts
Jack Reacher--The only trailer I've seen of this caused the audience to laugh when the badass it was building up was revealed to be Tom Cruise
This is 40--No way
Django Unchained--The trailer mad it look ridiculously fun
Les Miserables--Already a Les Mis fan, and this looks like an excellent adaptation
Parental Guidance--I'd rather stick a fork in my eye
Promised Land--This looks pretty good. I'm interested to see if Krasinski has the dramatic chops for it
Quartet--I like the cast, but I'm not sure if the premise is enough to keep me interested

Yes. It looks like L.A. Confidential without all the style (and is pretty much an unofficial prequel of sorts).

Gunny Highway: I saw the trailer for Jack Reacher. It looks really bad.

I got halfway through the trailer before I realized it wasn't another Mission Impossible film. Even the music sounded like MI.

I'm contractually obligated to say On the Road, but I don't know if they can pull it off. side note: didn't this trailer first his theaters about a year ago? I swear that trailer is a year old. I could be mistaken.

ordinarily i don't "get" Apatow movies but on the recent Adam Carolla podcast, he (Adam) has had Graham Parker and Apatow on, and the movie just sounds like something I'd like. I don't really care for Graham Parker but I respect him, and the recnet Apatow interview just sounded pretty damn interesting. So that's one I'd probably see in theaters instead of Blu Ray.

While I have no source, Tolkiens dwarves are "shorter and stockier then men". Through D&D and Video Games (which usually reference Tolkien in terms of fantasy) they have been likened to a short, burly biker dude, wider then they are tall, maybe about a foot / foot and a half shorter then humans.

Do people cling to RT's ratings because it's easy to grasp percentages? Their ratings and what constitutes as "good" is whacky as hell. If it's 90%, then is has by far the worst trailers.

Why? That's why I want to see it. Hurt Locker is pretty damn riveting.

The first time I watched it I was in a room with multiple people doing school work/internet surfing and before I knew it they were all hovering over my shoulder watching intently and not making a peep.

North Korea Population: 24,451,285
USA Population: 314,686,189

How will that fight last for more than 5 minutes? What're they going to do, rent the Chinese Army for the weekend?

RT doesn't actually rate anything. They're a movie critic aggregator site (though sometimes they stretch the definition of critic to "random jackhole who either has a blog or comments on a website about movies").

90% in this case means 90% of the critical reviews that they've polled have a positive opinion on the film.

It might be inaccurate. I haven't seen anything listing it's inaccuracies, but to the majority of the public that hasn't served in the military it's an easy concept to grasp and gets down to the nitty gritty pretty quickly. Wouldn't call it a pile of shiat even if could call it out.

Kind of, but with more muscle then fat...

2012-11-20 12:41:31 PM
1) 'Silver Linings Playbook'- Thank god my wife hates chick flicks almost as much as I do.
2) 'Life of Pi'- I kind of liked the book, seems like a rental not a "I'll pay $30 for the privilege"
3) 'Red Dawn'- One of those movies you can't remake. Plus, changing from Chinese to Norks...no-balls move.
4) 'Rise of the Guardians'- Going with a large group right after Thanksgiving dinner.
5) 'Hitchcock' - I'm always interested in this type of movie, but again, it doesn't need theater prices. Redbox or Netflix
6) 'Killing Them Softly' - Eh, seen plenty of this type of movie. If I'm bored one Saturday, I might check it out
7) 'Playing for Keeps'- See 'Silver Linings Playbook'
8) 'Hyde Park on Hudson'- Redbox
9) 'Stand Up Guys'- This one is a coin flip. Maybe a "walk into the show after/before the Hobbit, so I can see it for free"
10) 'The Hobbit' - Already have my tickets bought for the IMAX 3-D show. I've been looking forward to this since I was 8, and my mom and I read the story one chapter at a time. Finally a big budget, well done Hobbit movie.
11) 'The Guilt Trip'- I'd rather be beaten with a stick
12) 'Monsters, Inc 3D' - I'm not interested, but my wife is super excited to be taking our 7 year old niece while we're visiting family at Christmas
13) 'Zero Dark Thirty' - I fought in that war, I feel like I can avoid movies about it, thanks.
14) 'On the Road'- Never heard of it, sounds stupid
15) 'Jack Reacher' - Way to rape the books asshats. Fark you midget Cruise
16) 'This Is 40' - Didn't like 'Knocked Up', can't see liking this.
17) 'Django Unchained'- Tarantino just keeps going down hill for me. I'm not sure if that's because he's getting worse, or I'm getting older. Pass
18) 'Les Miserables'- The only reason my wife isn't dragging me to this on Christmas day is because we have 3 Christmases to go to, and we just don't have time. So, I'll be there on the 26th
19) 'Parental Guidance'- I'm not sure I could stomach that much stupid crammed into one movie
20) 'Promised Land'- Maybe if it comes out on Netflix streaming, otherwise, no
21) 'Quartet'- Umm, not only no, but hell no.

The audience can't tell it's wrong. They aren't unbelievable given that most people only know that our military is over there, and doesn't know how a military's occupational bomb squad operates.

I agree with you that movies shouldn't do that for drama, but everything had consistency and to someone who approaches it with only common sense it didn't feel like fabricated drama based solely on ridiculous premises.

Mr. Holmes: Here's the thing I don't get about Red Dawn. We're being invaded by North Korea, right? Let's get this straight:

North Korea Population: 24,451,285
USA Population: 314,686,189

How will that fight last for more than 5 minutes? What're they going to do, rent the Chinese Army for the weekend?

Hint, anything North Korean is CGI, it started out as the Chinese, but, we'll show two other numbers

Possible USA movie going population: 314,686,189
Possible Chinese movie going population: 1,344,130,000
Possible North Korean movie going population: 6

The suits wanted expect to make most of their money on international release these days, and they figured Chinese people wouldn't pay to watch their soldiers get their asses kicked. They don't care about North Koreans.

And that was three other numbers, not two.

I know I am going to hate myself but I will probably go see On the Road. I liked the book when I read it as a young man so I am very interested to see the treatement... though looking at the trailer and who is in it, yep it is going to suck.

I did not understand his sentence. From that you can probably derive who the audience that appreciates this movie is.

Tat'dGreaser: thecpt: It might be inaccurate. I haven't seen anything listing it's inaccuracies, but to the majority of the public that hasn't served in the military it's an easy concept to grasp and gets down to the nitty gritty pretty quickly. Wouldn't call it a pile of shiat even if could call it out.

Well when you use inaccuracies to fabricate drama, that's just dumb

China only allows a few international movies released every year in the mainland. I'd be surprised if Red Dawn gets a release date. It might show in Hong Kong but i'd think the Japanese audience who wants to watch China get their butt kicked would offset the Hong Kong numbers.

I already have my tix for The Hobbit opening day (in HFR 3D).

I will also most assuredly be seeing Django Unchained when it opens on Christmas Day. 'No Miss' defined in my book. The trailer they showed before Skyfall only cemented my feelings. WIN.

Shadow Blasko: CHRIST that is the most script heavy privacy intrusive site I have ever seen.

And you can't even deslide it!

Actually, you can:

deslided

It's a JSON-based slideshow from HuffPo and those usually work.
I'm not sure why it didn't work earlier.
One explanation could be that the deslider got garbage without an HTTP error code when it tried to download the slideshow data for the first time (e.g. an AJAX call returning an empty JSON result instead of an error) .
That garbage result then got cached and so all subsequent attempts failed until the garbage got thrown out.

Snapper Carr: Really curious to see how Ang Lee handles Life of Pi (and if ambiguous downer ending is left intact).

I'm skipping because that's all I can remember of the book. Or perhaps my recent life events prevents me from seeing it as anything but a downer.

Would love to see how he handles the algae/coral? island though.

Zero Dark Thirty is the one that I really want to see... But I'm so disappointed that it's being directed by that Hurt Locker director. That movie had some tense action scenes, but a very half-baked plot. It seems like ZDT is supposed to be about the decade-long failed manhunt for Osama, then they shoehorned in the Osama killing towards the end because he was killed while the movie was well into production.

I believe its working title was, "Here, Fellas, Look at Jennifer Lawrence's Cleavage to Distract You During This Awful Chick Flick." Truth be told, it was a rather clumsy title.

Actually I just listened to the review on Fresh Air, and sounds pretty good. If you like David O. Russell.

I thought the movie had good drama, but the characters were total shiat. They were so cliched that if I were in the services, I'd be insulted that everyone in that movie was portrayed as a drunk, adrenaline junkie, or a guy that punches his commanding officer in the face and contemplates killing him as well. The inaccuracies were baffling as well. From incorrect uniforms to wearing said uniforms incorrectly to walking through Baghdad alone to find some kid (or whatever the hell it was) to the astounding lack of radios, it seemed the director couldn't get anything right. The fact that it was even nominated for Best Picture oughta be criminal, let alone beating out a far superior movie like "Inglorious Basterds."

wholedamnshow: They were so cliched that if I were in the services, I'd be insulted that everyone in that movie was portrayed as a drunk, adrenaline junkie, or a guy that punches his commanding officer in the face and contemplates killing him as well.

Only one person was really portrayed as an adrenaline junkie and drunk (the other two got drunk once but they were actually uncomfortable about it). The other two hated him and thought (at really only one point) that it was in their best interest to off him. I thought the characters were pretty good but vague.

I don't know anything about the inaccuracies (and my argument is that the general public doesn't either and therefore the story is believable), but I thought the kid thing was another irrational decision by the main character which made sense given his previous decisions... and didn't everyone have radios?

Agreed on IB though. Damn good movie. Thought it was a casualty of the new 10 nominees for best picture because we're incompetent and go for Oscar bait everytime.

Protip: removing dimensions from image URLs can sometimes pay off:

#2 (900x1200)

Well, there was no dimension to remove in the URL of #3, but checking out some HuffPo slideshows earlier, I just happened to find a comparatively lame/tame Jennifer Lawrence slideshow [deslided] with HQ images and the last pic was a different pic of her in the same dress, so..

buck1138: Burr: B.L.Z. Bub: chionophile: Because Tolkien dwarfs aren't the same as "real dwarfs"?

All that matters for the movie's purpose is height and proportionality. I know a lot about Tolkien, but I have must have missed the details on this particular point. Elaborate how they're different, please.

So kinda like Danny Devito?

I'm confused by my interest in "Silver Linings Playbook" --not sure why I want to see it. I am sure I will Netflix it at some point.

I'd see the Seth Rogen movie if anyone else shared my rabid crush on him. Again, Netflix.

Anything 3-D = migraine, so that's off the list.

Honestly, the last movie I saw in a theatre was "Kick Ass" so I really should just go back to the politics tab.
