You give the director of a Chinese love story to direct Hulk, and he turns it into a love story?

that picture of Garfield looks... unfortunate... if you look at the shape of his tail two seconds too long.

Full comic nerd rant mode: Comic villains have a legacy that go back decades. Use Brian Banner, Zzax and Absorbing Man separately if you want to use them all. Don't scrunch them all into one character, make him Bruce's father and call him "David Banner" because awww... TV series nostalgia!

No Ang Lee, don't fall on your sword. For what you knew at the time this was a decent effort. Just because people loved fun Avengers Hulk doesn't mean he could have carried a whole movie back then. That hulk has the advantage of short doses and no real story to tell on his own.

2012-11-20 10:17:19 AM
I actually liked his version except for sticking Patrick DNA in him. other than that, it was refreshing to have it not just be HULK SMASH STUFF for 2 straight hours.

And Sam Elliot is an awesome Thunderbolt Ross.

That Hulk movie was good at the time, and still holds up independent of the new Hulk iteration. I saw it in the theater, and the kids and I like watching the DVD now and then.

Sometimes comic book nerds just try to wreck something because it's not of their world enough.

/But I guess another way to look at it is all the complaining resulted in improved Marvel movies over the ensuing years.

I cannot wait for The Life of Pi. That's been on my favorite book list for years.

Sooo what about 'The Incredible Hulk' with Norton? That was a 1000 times better than Ang Lee's version.

Nolan took his film serious too with all the psychodrama, his movies didn't suck. Hulk script is just boring.

I kinda liked it.

Watch it again. Norton is an improvement as well as the Hulk CGI (but not quite right yet) Betty and Thunderbolt are a step down. Better villain too, I'd say. At best, it's a B- where Hulk is a C-.

Guess I'm in the minority here, but I thought Ang Lee's Hulk movie was fantastic. The character was explored better than any time before or since, and the drama between he characters was truly touching. Plus it was hilarious to watch all the moms who'd brought their young children have to jump up and leave with their kids when it got too intense.

2012-11-20 11:12:30 AM
I think that Ang Lee could do a wonderful version of "Hulk: The End"

It looks like there's a few of us here. I haven't seen it since release, but I liked it at the time and don't get all the hate. But I'm not an obsessive comic book fan. I liked the Norton movie, too, but it felt redundant and unnecessary in the same way the new Spider-Man movie feels redundant and unnecessary.

Umm, no.

The CG of the original Hulk film is quite good, once you get over the color (he actually has pores!). The Norton one has better color but is very plastic looking and doesn't blend as well. Lee's Hulk is too bright green but he still looks like he's actually there on location.

And as ridiculous as the concept it, the CG hulked-out Poodle's animation is very well done.

2012-11-20 11:42:19 AM
I haven't seen Ang Lee's Hulk movie. I eventually saw Norton's movie, after the Avengers came out, and was underwhelmed. The Hulk didn't look right, and I didn't really buy Norton as Banner.

2012-11-20 11:48:09 AM
I didn't think it was awful and I enjoyed the scenes with Hulk tearing it up in the desert quite a lot. The two two big problems with The Hulk:

1. They should have began the movie with the Hulk and then told the rest through flashback. Takes WAY too long to get to the big guy and I would rather have a good scene, maybe with him partially shadowed to reveal more later, but a good action scene, or at least a little tease with the Hulk to get the mood going.

2. The poodle. Come on.

If you think you can't tell a good story with the Hulk, ask Peter David. I'd personally love to see a movie featuring "Mr. Fixit" some day.

2012-11-20 11:49:48 AM
I liked it, didn't even realize till like ten years later that some thought it was bad.

2012-11-20 11:53:22 AM
Rule #1 of comic book movies - DON'T PISS ON THE FAN BASE.

But there he went, making the Absorbing Man Hulk's father somehow? That was just guaranteed to piss off the only built-in audience, plus it made no goddamn sense whatsoever and diminished the whole drama of Banner vs. Hulk vs. Humanity.

It was a badly conceived college film class quality story, which is unforgiveable since there was so much source material already there for him to use.

Which Chinese Love Story?

The Ice Storm? Ride with the Devil? Sense & Sensibility? And those would be prior to The Hulk.

Oh, he Chinaman. Only make Chinaman movie. I see. So solly.

2012-11-20 11:54:23 AM
I liked it too, a little too artsy with the editing, but nothing that made it unwatchable.

2012-11-20 11:58:04 AM
Come to think of it, there's really good story potential in a movie where Hulk somehow in the course of the movie gets some of Banner's smarts. What he'd do with that power. And, like all comics, they could bring back the rage monster at the end.

Here's the thing about Ang Lee Hulk. When he's in the desert and a helicopter shoots a missile at him and he catches the missile and throws it back at the helicopter and it explodes you hear a crackle of radio static and a voice saying "we're ok."

And that there is the gayest thing to happen in any Ang Lee movie.
