vermicious k'nid: I don't know why this is bothering me so much, but it is.

Question for all the people vilifying this woman: Do you GENUINELY think that her intent with this picture is to give a big "FARK YOU!" to all the military and the people who died for this country? Like, she went to Arlington, suddenly realized how much she hates dead soldiers, then said to her husband "Get a pic of me one finger saluting these dead arseholes. Hey, then I'll post it to Facebook so the world can see how much I hate them!"

Or did she say:

"Haha, look at the sign. Take a picture of me being ironic."

Now carefully apply Occam's razor.

It's bugging me too for the same reason.

An unoriginal sense of humor is not a crime against humanity.

Nofun: Defiling the tomb of unknown soldier is not the same thing as sticking it to the man. It's defiling the memory of the person who gave you the right to stick it to the man.

I didn't see where the article said anything about vandalism. All I see is a picture of her with her mouth open and her middle finger extended. She could be yawning and pointing at something for all we know.

It's not "military worship" to show a little goddamn respect once in a while. Don't respect the military? That's fine. At least have a little consideration for the grieving widow/orphaned child who is there to visit the last resting place of someone they love. That doesn't require worship of any sort, just a little common human decency.

There's usually nothing I hold as sacred and above being made fun of and I am among those who think we go way over the top with our hero worship of anyone who ever served in the military...

....but what the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier represents, to me at least, is off limits.

one0nine: There's a time and a place to do stupid shiat and joke around, and Arlington doesn't qualify for either. It's a big, huge, wide open world and there's plenty of places for her to be her douchetastic self instead of here, where people come to pay respects to their family members.

Seriously, you humorless assholes need to relax. She is making fun of the sign, because the sign is obviously not needed in such a place. Casting the sign in bronze seems to imply humanity will never understand the need for civility and respect near the tomb, and such an insult needs to be mocked. That's okay, I understand y'all are just sexually frustrated and any hot girl reminds you of your constant rejection, so hate away.

MFK: jesus christ. I just clicked through the links in TFA that link to her employer's facebook page and the people there are just screaming, demanding an apology from this chick's employer and it got me thinking:

WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

Seriously. This was a stupid kid making a stupid mistake like stupid kids tend to do and yet the internet is bound and determined to ruin the lives and livelihoods of everyone even remotely connected to this girl.

It's not like she killed anyone. It's not like she stole anything or committed a hate crime or any crime for that matter. She just took a stupid goofy picture and put it on her facebook page. I have profound respect for the military, especially those that gave their lives, but it's not like she was defacing tombstones or urinating on graves.

To those of you who are posting on her boss's page and commenting publicly about this: who do you think you are that you're entitled to harass her employers who had nothing to do with it and generally fark up this girl forever? It must be nice to have never done anything immature before. You're just being judgmental dicks.

Seriously, this. WTF is wrong with you people. Have a farking sense of perspective here. She took a stupid picture in front of a sign.

I'm a far-left liberal and a lifelong Democrat and I have zero use for hyper-patriotic flag-waving name-callers. But as a combat veteran myself, and the son and grandson of career army officers, I have to say, this photo kind of puts me off. My Dad, who was a New Deal liberal Democrat (and who even voted for McGovern) wouldn't have approved, either.

OTOH, the people who are complaining to her employer, fer chrissakes, are just being assholes. Those True Patriots demanding she be punished by losing her job because she was photographed acting like a tasteless idiot had better be damn sure their own glass houses are safe.

I would not do this out of respect for not the military, but for those that gave their lives. I support her right to do what she wants as long as it's not illegal, but then, posting this shiat on facebook, the girl deserves what she gets.

Happy Hours: Slaxl: It is a profound lack of respect but why get worked up over it? If I was there I would have quietly told her not to be a dick, and I'm not even American, but you'll be hard pressed to get me as annoyed as some people are over a picture on the internet.

I'm not sure how to explain it. Why did I get a very weird creepy feeling when I drove past Dachau in Germany? I'm not even Jewish. Dachau and Arlington are not the same thing by any stretch of the imagination but like I said earlier there are some places where you should just shut up and show some respect.

The reason I didn't stop and visit Dachau was because I didn't want to think about it. I just wanted to get away from it, but imagine if you will the outrage that would have happened if this coont had visited Dachau and done the same thing. At the same time, let's put the outrage in perspective. This isn't making national headlines. It's not news, it's Fark.

What if she had done the same to a national symbol of another country? Wiped her ass with the Union Jack while standing in front of Buckingham Palace? Some people might have a problem with that.

Maybe it's not quite as bad as holding a punk rock prayer in the most important church in the nation which is probably why she's not being sent to a gulag, but she deserves every ounce of ridicule and loathing that she is getting.

It might have been different if she had a point, but she wasn't protesting US foreign policy - she just wanted to take a shiat on a grave that is very a revered and solemn place in the US. .

When I visited Dachau (in 2001), I walked in and just had a sense that it was a place to be quiet. No one said anything about it, there were no signs requesting silence, it was just a feeling that the entire group of us had. Then we saw a man filming his son pretending to choke to death in the gas chambers. I never truly wept for humanity untiil that moment.

If it was false commentary and you could prove that it damaged her reputation and thus her economics, maybe, but that's tough to prove for someone whose isn't widely known. If she made her living in the spotlight, there is nowhere she could go to do her job in that profession. If she was a secretary, she'll find another job.

Of course, anyone, feel free to use actual jurisprudence knowledge other than that which I am quoting from other Fark threads and / or Law & Order to further elucidate us.

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said anybody caught trespassin' would be shot on sight
So I jumped on the fence and-a yelled at the house, "Hey! What gives you theright?"
"To put up a fence to keep me out or to keep mother nature in"
"If God was here he'd tell you to your face, Man, you're some kinda sinner"

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

And the sign said, "Everybody welcome. Come in, kneel down and pray"
But when they passed around the plate at the end of it all, I didn't have a penny to pay
So I got me a pen and a paper and I made up my own little sign
I said, "Thank you, Lord, for thinkin' 'bout me. I'm alive and doin' fine."
