The Trop is a 1950's dump, thank you very much. Which is probably why the cross street is named Tropicana and not Excalibur Blvd. Haven't stayed there since 99 but it was pretty dated then.

Yes, the Luxor is kind of a dump. Is Mandalay Bay still decent or has that gone to seed too?

Sorry Vegas, just about every state has legal gambling within a day trip. If I want generic "classy" there are a dozen places within 3 hours of me in SE Michigan.

Just got back from a weekend stay at the Trop and was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. It was recently remodeled (so I'm told) and seemed modern and lively. It doesn't have a lazy river or the amenities that the bigger places have, but it is was nice enough for me to feel like I had to defend her honor in a Fark comment thread; so that's got to be worth something.

Tropicana has been refurbed recently. I've been in the lobby and one of the restaurants as recently as a year ago. The rooms look pretty nice in the website photos now. I'll be staying there in a few weeks, so I'll let you know if it lives up to expectations or disappoints.

All i know is that whenever i've gone to Vegas and stayed there, I've gone home with more money than i came there with. Plus it's much easier to find your way home from a drunken night on the Strip by just following the big ass light in the sky.

Mandalay Bay is pretty good. The VIP private cabana pools are one of the best things of any property I have ever stayed at. The rooms are ok, nothing super fancy but for most people they are never really in their rooms to begin with. The casino layout is pretty good and the payout rates seem to be pretty good (I have my best luck on Friday night always). As far as restaurants go, it has some really nice places (Stripsteak is probably the best restaurant I have ever eaten at, and eating outside @ Mix on the top floor is a great view albeit hot and gross sometimes out there) recommend and a 24/7 room service menu which not all casinos offer. Clubs and bars inside are meh, but then again pretty much all of the clubs are highly overrated. You either get dirty Cali gang-banger filth or dbags.

We used to stay at the Rio as a part of the VIP members (Harrash properties) and switched over to Mandalay Bay (M properties) when our casino host left. My #1 recommendation to anyone going to Vegas or that will go annually, MAKE FRIENDS WITH A CASINO HOST and get a player's card. It isn't hard to get even the second tier status gambling, especially if you share cards (which M properties mostly allows). You should be able to get VIP status off $5k, which pays for itself in gold and you probably won't lose all of that $5k. Collectively, if you and just one other go to Vegas - that isn't that expensive of a vacation. We gamble, but at most I will be out 2k now - more often than not I come home with a few hundred or thousand playing conservatively though.
