Pretty much. Oh for the days when you could just call in professionals with axe handles and rifles to "moderate" a strike disagreement...

You can't systemically quash all union activity in your stores then turn around and say you respect union activity of the one that managed to break through, assholes.

"Which Side Are You On?"

Come all you good workers
Good news to you I'll tell
Of how the good old union
Has come in here to dwell

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

My daddy was a miner
He's now in the air and sun
He'll be with you fellow workers
Until the battle's won

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

They say in Harlan County
There are no neutrals there
You'll either be a union man
Or a thug for J. H. Claire

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Oh workers can you stand it?
Oh tell me how you can
Will you be a lousy scab
Or will you be a man?

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

Don't scab for the bosses
Don't listen to their lies
Poor folks ain't got a chance
Unless they organize

Which side are you on boys?
Which side are you on?

sadly we are probably closer than many imagine. this time they will be wearing local PD uniforms should god forbid anyone break any imaginary golden rule. i'm thinking if action takes place at more than 2 wallyMarts there will be happy faces in SWAT team uniforms there to beat hell out of the minimum wagers.

Come and take a walk with me thru this green and growing land
Walk thru the meadows and the mountains and the sand
Walk thru the valleys and the rivers and the plains
Walk thru the sun and walk thru the rain

Here is a land full of power and glory
Beauty that words cannot recall
Oh her power shall rest on the strength of her freedom
Her glory shall rest on us all (on us all)

From Colorado, Kansas, and the Carolinas too
Virginia and Alaska, from the old to the new
Texas and Ohio and the California shore
Tell me, who could ask for more?

Yet she's only as rich as the poorest of her poor
Only as free as the padlocked prison door
Only as strong as our love for this land
Only as tall as we stand

But our land is still troubled by men who have to hate
They twist away our freedom & they twist away our fate
Fear is their weapon and treason is their cry
We can stop them if we try

This does not surprise me. WallyWorld doesn't want to lose it's cash cow - aka paying as little as possible, not having ANY full time employees, and sure as hell no union.

FTFA : "In its complaint Thursday, Wal-Mart said the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and it's subsidiary known as OURWalmart, of trying to force it into collective bargaining even though it is not the official union for Wal-Mart's employees."

Wal-mart has an official union of its employees ? What is this ? The Soviet Union ?

Hopefully this will make the walk out much, much worse. Anyone who does black friday shopping at walmart deserves the pandemonium that would follow. We all know the workers will just go back in though...

How dare Wal-Mart want it's employees to work on the busiest day of the year? Clearly it should thank them for skipping work.

If there aren't people willing to take their jobs, then when WalMart fires the employees who walk out, they'll be screwed I guess.

Sounds like WalMart has a point in their litigation. Their workers have already approved a union to represent them, yet another union is trying to horn in. The feds should take the unapproved union to the cleaners.

I can't tell if they're genuine, or if union threads get trolled because it's a hot button issue, but these threads certainly bring out the asshats. I hope they all live in right-to-work states, without understanding the irony.

Wal-Mart workers have no union representation in the United States. The UCFCW is not horning in on anybody.

Even if they were, I find it funny that the same people who complain that workers should not be forced to join a union if they want to work are even more upset if those same workers choose to join a union that isn't "official."

2012-11-19 10:31:36 AM
Does anyone know what it would cost WalMart to pay their employees? I mean beyond the wageslavery - things like a health plan, 401(k) (which I think they have, though I'd be surprised if it wasn't a share or 6 of WalMart stock and a basket full of Cracker Barrel "cheez" samplers), vacation time (maybe only for long-time people or management; it's still "menial work" which usually doesn't give you time off for good behavior), overtime (and feel free to restrict it to "approved"; but "none, ever, even if you have to clock out before restocking this shelf" is insanity)...

Hell, if they had health insurance and 3 paid days off per year, $7.50/hour is almost livable (if you're single with no kids and you live in someone else's cardboard box).

Maybe it says they think Wal-Mart competes with mom and pop stores on a level playing field, and aren't aware that they enjoy special tax breaks or other exemptions (which State and/or Local authorities typically provide them in exchange for "creating jobs").

When I was young and working through college making 2 bucks over minimum wage, no insurance, having to pay double payroll taxes, I lived with 2 roomates in a small apartment. We got by fine.

It depends how belligerent the striking workers are. If they refuse to allow replacement workers or customers access to the stores, or otherwise deny Walmart to its lawful property, then yeah law enforcement will have to get involved, like the pinkertons tried to do in te 1800s when strikers took over/blocked plants.

2012-11-19 10:51:45 AM
Over under on number of bomb threats called in to various Wal-Mart locations on Friday?

They'd figure out that they were hoaxes pretty rapidly, but they couldn't ignore them , and an hour of shopping lost on black Friday equates to millions, if not tens of millions of dollars.

Can you imagine not only the panic, but the chaos that would ensue if you've got 100 people in 20 lines waiting to check out and then "Everyone, please leave the store immediately" came over the PA?

IMHO more effective than any half-assed employee walkout. Hell, the store you work in sells burners.
