Vegetarians desperately looking for meat substitutes like the Veggieducken are just pathetic, but pure veggie that doesn't worry about meat at all can be fantastic.

Anyway, I don't think normal people hate vegetarians or vegans. In my experience normal folks hate proselytizers who feel the need to convert you or ridicule your choices that don't match theirs...but personally I dislike that on any subject, including jackasses like this idiot or people who post "for every animal you don't eat I eat two".

There are delicious vegetarian dishes, if you don't think so, chances are you haven't been exposed to much delicious food of any persuasion, vegetarian or not.

There are delicious dishes containing meat. I'll continue enjoying both without the need to make it a partisan issue.

I don't get the hate for vegetarianism/veganism. Yes, some of them can be obnoxious douchebags, but the same can be said for any group of people; they're no different or special. I happen to like vegetarian and vegan dishes as much as dishes that have meat in them. I would be comfortable at either group of people's dinner table, no matter what they served.

Just because Thanksgiving is traditionally loaded with meat, doesn't mean people who don't eat meat have to sleep through Thursday to get to Friday. That's ridiculous.

1. If it has no meat, it is a side dish. Period. No exceptions.
2. There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian. Period. No exceptions. (Well, except you miss out on using gravy for sexual purposes, but not everyone is into that, so...)
3. There is everything wrong with being a vegetarian and trying to get the meat-loving world to conform to you. Tofurky's very existence is pretentious. See rule 1. Be at peace with living on side dishes. It is very good for you! There is no need to create vegetarian entrees. It is trying to make food be something that it isn't merely for social conformity reasons. That is stupid. Leave it.
4. If the choice between holiday fare was either lutefisk or vegetarian dishes, a lot of perspectives would change.

Hi! Welcome to Fark! You are obviously new here, so let me clue you in on something. This site passed its prime about 8 years ago. The only thing keeping it alive now are sponsored links, "affiliated site networks" (link swaps), a few hundred TFers paying $5 a month, and hit-dependent ad revenue. Petition threads, controversy threads of all types, TFD threads, and wrestling threads, are all insipid and socially retarded, but they are the only threads which generate the number of hits necessary to make ad revenue at all feasible. In other words, Fark, as a website, technically runs on the stupidity, immaturity, social ineptness, and gullible ignorance of its users. It only makes sense then that it would foster and encourage it to grow by increasing the number of links which draw out those kinds of responses. It is lowest common denominator stuff, pretty basic ad/marketing strategy.

Some of the recipes don't look too bad. But the tomato fennel bisque looked awful when I read the recipe. Thickened with sea kelp granules and vegan sour cream and then topped with vegan cheddar cheese? Why not just skip those ingredients and call it roasted tomato and fennel soup? Would be much tastier.

It's simple really.

We evolved to be omnivores, meaning we're suppose to eat a variety of foods, including plants and animals.

There is nothing particularly superior, more cultured, or more civilized about eating vegan. Sorry, there just isn't. It does however require a fair amount of discipline, and there's lots of ways to do it wrong. Even if you do it right, you put yourself at higher risk for dementia and Alzheimer's later in life. On the other hand, you lower your odds of getting certain types of cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses.

The best diet for humans includes lots of fiber and low in certain types of fat, with generous portions of plant material, vegetables, lean meats, and light on the refined sugar.

It also doesn't hurt if you stop using your exercise equipment to hang clothes, actually ride you bike instead of letting it rust in a shed or act as a piece of wall art, and manage to walk further than the garage to hop in your car and run further than the bathroom on a consistent basis.

It's not just here. I noticed this a lot last year in response to various food/advice columns and blogs. Some people seem really upset that a vegetarian is coming to Thanksgiving dinner and what on earth are they going to feed this weirdo? Some of them were downright nasty about it.

But then there are nasty vegetarians as well. I read a newspaper article about a blind taste test of several brands of tofurkey. I was interested because I have vegetarian guests for T-giving. The comments were amazing. Vegetarians OUTRAGED that you would even think they would want to eat something that tastes like MURDER and meat does NOT taste good and it's an abomination that any vegetarian would consider eating something like this. I once read an article written by someone who had been vegetarian for less than a year and she talked about missing meat and having difficulty resisting the turkey at Thanksgiving. Once again, lots of comments from outraged vegetarians.

I mentioned this in another thread. One of my best friends is vegetarian and she has no problem telling you that meat is delicious and she misses it. But she loves animals so she doesn't eat them. And a vegan acquaintance told me that she would eat cheese or dairy products if it came from a "happy cow," one that had lots of room to roam around and eat grass, wasn't pumped full of antibiotics, etc. She's also an animal lover.

I volunteer for a rescue group so I know a lot of vegetarians and not one of them is obnoxious about it. You would only know if you asked directly or were at a restaurant and heard a conversation with the waiter about a dish, making sure it was vegetarian.

So, this is another thread where omnivores make fun of vegetarians to disguise their insecurities.

I don't know why you're afraid of us, but you can go ahead and stop asking daddy to check under your bed.

I have been a vegetarian for about 21 years.
Full disclosure, about 2 years ago, I forayed into fish, but have since reverted.

I do eat some dairy here and there.


In those 21 years, I generally held back all discussions about my diet choices, and never really broadcasted it. I also never admonished anyoen for their dietary choices.

There were WAY too many people who wanted to debate me (meat eaters).

Talk about douchebags.

Why are you bringing up 'hate'? We just think this food is gross.

Because invariably when threads about vegetarians or vegans show up, commentary devolves into how stupid/gross/weird they are, even if the linked article is about food and not people. It was a general statement, not a specific comment on a specific post. It gets old, mostly because my boyfriend and I have a lot of friends of the non-meat eater persuasion, and while I don't doubt there are douchebag vegans, we certainly have never met any.

As for thinking the food is gross, I think that's a bit narrow-minded, but I also think cottage cheese looks like something a woman goes to the gynecologist for and I won't touch the stuff. So what do I know. There's a lot of food out there you may not know you like until you stick a fork in your mouth and chew. I used to think Brussels sprouts were disgusting until I tried them roasted, now I can't get enough of them. I also used to hate tofu, but one of my closest friends is vegan and cooks with it a lot, and rather than being rude when invited to dinner, I tried it and discovered I liked it.
