Not that I've discovered. I think they just need a conspiracy scandal to keep their minds busy.

I thought it was to keep themselves in a perpetual froth of manufactured outrage so they can somehow rationalize their own incompetence?

Fox turned out to be quite competent; they got people to watch and believe them, to the point of denying reality, while making lots of money. The re-election of Obama is only good for Fox's future business, they have four more years to fark the chicken.

In retrospect, this was inevitably going to turn into a "scandal" as soon as Mitt Romney blew the press conference the day of the attack. Since the GOP was exposed as so callous as to be happy about Americans dying because they could make a political point out of it, they've been forced to keep going at it trying to somehow in their own heads win back a fight that they lost. If that involves inventing conspiracies, so be it.

Don't forget Glenn Beck. Although to be fair, Glenn may just be crazy.

That's how I'm handling this.

i still don't know what the president is supposed to have lied about. can somebody tell me?

2012-11-18 12:26:36 PM
I think the outrage is because the President was watching the attack in realtime from the controls of a Hellfire-armed drone, had a squadron of C130 gunships circling the city and Seal Team 23 in the water offshore ready to charge to the rescue; and then suddenly told all of Our American Heroes to stand down so that the ambassador would die so as to cover up how the Democrats were going to steal the election.

I think that's the narrative, anyway. Hard to tell from all of the facebook "Fallen Four!" posters.

That doesn't matter. The important thing is to be outraged.

I think that's the most sensible thing I've heard about this "scandal" so far.

With the election over, no.

2012-11-18 01:04:09 PM
Why? Conservatives believe this will be enough to impeach the President if they keep pouring imaginary gasoline on an imaginary flame. Republicans are mostly saine enough to know that won't happen, but it is beter to talk about this than how neutered they currently are.

2012-11-18 02:08:11 PM
the GOP needs Obama to fail. they NEED him to fail. look, the GOP narrative for the past 4 years is that the Obama administration has been a complete failure, that Obama himself is incompetent and that the Democrats must be seen to be backing a loser. the recent election not only destroyed that narrative, but it revealed a harsh truth: outside of the GOP echco chamber, the Republicans just aren't doing very well.

so what's the point of this Benghazi conspiracy theory? well...it's not being targeted at mainstream america. it's being pointed at the GOP echo chamber. the Republican pundits have to explain how they got it so wrong with Obama. the only possible way that works is if they come up with a conspiracy plot. this isn't about finding 'the truth'. this is about making sure the GOP base stays on the reservation and doesn't stop to ask pointed questions about where the Republican party is heading in the near future...

I think you're right about most of that. It's ironic that they're demanding an in-depth investigation, which by all indications can only lead to completely refuting their talking points. Sucks to be them.

I heard Obama diverted Seal Team 6 to a bazaar in Tripoli to purchase special handstiched burkas for Sasha and Malia.

I don't think the GOP wants to actually HAVE any hearings. I think they'll put on a show, make a big production out of it with interviews, well written articles and targeted advertising campaigns. they'll generate soundbytes to use in 2014, and the Republican leadership will try to look all serious about Benghazi...but in the end, it'll be nothing more than a paper shuffle and will quietly be dismissed once the mid-term elections are over. I fully expect us to go through AT LEAST two more 'Obama is a failure' manufactured scandals between now and 2014.

Yeah, if you don't have hearings, you can go on Fox News and whine about how the Democrat Party (sic) won't let you investigate this and is covering it up.

Hillary can demolish this whole non-story quickly: "I asked for extra protection for consulates and embassies, Congress said no can do, then this happened".

No, this thing isn't going away easy. the Republicans have a vested interest in making sure that this drags out for a couple months. or until something else comes along that seems like it might work out better. the point is that 'reasonable explanations' are going to be either wildly distorted or flat out ignored. Fox News, the GOP pundits and various right wing blogs are going to pump up the outrage and do what they can to maintain the hysteria. they NEED to find a way to keep their voters distracted until the Republican leaders can figure out what to do next.

If they keep pressing an investigation, at some point they will put themselves in a position in which it may be impossible to avoid investigating Darrel Issa. So far, every witch hunt they've undergone has wound up leading them straight to their own asses.

I think the most simple answer is that the CIA knew this was an Al-Qaeda attack, kept it quiet for a while so the Libyans could round up the others and deal with them. I get the feeling that the new Libyan government wants to be friends with the US.

Petraeus has testified to keeping suspicions private for purely intelligence purposes, not political ones. Not even Libyan political ones. He didn't want to alert the militants and spook them until he knew exactly who did it, and was in a position to apprehend them.

They might be willfully obtuse and a little light headed, but the rank and file can tell when their goose is cooked overcooked burnt to a crisp.

Oh look, another "leave obama alooone!" article on Benghazi.

Pick One! Obama is

A) Completely incompetent to a criminal level that got 4 people killed. This means he really didn't know anything at all. This is currently what he claims.

B) Seeing what his stupidity caused and his administrations piss poor decision making was going to make him look really bad before the election, he lied about it every which way he could and tried to cover it up.

Liar or Stupid. Pick one.

And they'll go with "If you felt security was so important why didn't you take money from the electric car budget or the solar panel subsidy budget or the" etc etc. It won't mater if you tell them that's not how budgets work and there's rules against the President just moving budgets around like.

On the topic:
Over hearing a few right wing dingbats at work, some of the right wingers are going with that Obama wanted to blame the youtube video which no one has ever watched ever because he wanted to blame Christians and not Muslims because he's a Muslim. I believe Michael Berry is pushing this line of idiocy.

remember what I posted up thread? this is a good example of what I was talking about. the GOP talking point is that Obama MUST be seen to fail. Of course, the problem here is that the recent election showed just how badly this Republican talking point has failed to catch on with most of the country. silly words

The President is not responsible for how the CIA handles their security matters. If anything, the CIA has and will continue to say that they 'asked' for additional security measures and were turned down by the GOP-controlled House committee.

I know that the GOP is desperate for the President to have screwed up on this, but he didn't. And the more that they scream and howl and squeal about every little silly thing, the more likely that when he DOES screw up, the general majority of Americans are just going to roll their eyes at the inevitable squealing and screaming and howling over it from the GOP.

Too much Noise to Signal. When you need to get heard, you won't be.
