It's even better in person. I can't recommend the Inca Trail enough to anyone who is curious about it, and I'd recommend going as soon as you can, since they are eventually going to stop letting people do it.

Why is that?

Preservation. They are worried about it being run down by tourists, sort of like how you can't climb on the pyramids in Egypt or walk on certain sections of the Great Wall.

I couldn't agree with you more. I went years ago and it was life-changingly beautiful.

What's this about not letting people go anymore? Do you mean on the Inca trail or are they going to close off some sections of Macchu Pichu?

I want to do the Ancient South American ruins thing before I die and I have a question for people who have already done it. Is it possible to head up to the place on top of the mountain? I don't like crowds of tourists.

I remember discussions of both, but mostly Macchu Picchu itself. Apparently there were talks of creating a rope cable car which would take you very close to the ground and let you see things close up, but you wouldn't be able to actually walk on the grounds. This is how they do it at Chichen Itza, I think.

You gotta do it. The Inca Trail itself has many ruins along the way which, IMO, come close to rivaling Macchu Picchu itself but are not famous at all - Wiñay Wayna for example, was my favorite. Just a gorgeous place.

The altitude can be a bit rough on you if you are not used to it, when I went I had been living at about 6000 feet above sea level in Colombia for a year, so it was easy, but I would have had a rough going of it it I hadn't.

If you do the South America thing head to Cartagena first, the old city is amazing, or hit it on the way out.

Don't forget to eat the national dish. Guinea pig!

Yeah, you can get up there - it's called Huayna Picchu (or Wayna Picchu). They limit it to 400 people/day, so you'll want to get tickets ahead of time. No camping there or at Machu Picchu - no one is allowed in either place after sunset (or well....5pm when I was there).

A friend of mine who does ultras went "hey, I'm going to be doing this race on the Inca Trail. Want to come?" So I said yes, as a spectator. Then found out only runners could go on the trail, and I figured "when's the next time I'll be able to do this again?" So I did.

And now I'm one of the first 10 people to ever have run an official marathon on the Inca Trail in a day. Which is kinda awesome. Only 12 people out of 41 finished in a day.

It was my second marathon ever :D

That shiat was gross.

A less toursity and it is pre-incan, city is La Ciuadad Perdida in Colombia, the lost city. Was found founded 650 years before Machu Piccu, and is very clean, and very intact.

It is a three day hike in, and a three day hike out. But worth it. Not many tourists at all.

I did it when I was 40, and trained for it, but it was well worth it. What helped was that i got to stare at little Aussie chicks rump in short shorts the entire time.

I got married this year, so that was the last thing to cross off my bucket list.
