Coal Schooners were not "clippers" in any sense of the word. Most were slab-sided so they could carry more, which made them very difficult to manage in bad weather with a small crew and a parafin donkey engine that was less than reliable.

Earguy: My cousin was working a plumbing job on the Atlantic City shore immediately after a big churning storm about 10 years ago. The beach was littered with prohibition-era bootleg whiskey bottles. He picked up about five of them, two were still corked and full. He opened one, and it was fouled with seawater. He kept the other one sealed, and has them in his house.

Especially with the popularity of Boardwalk Empire now, I bet they're worth a few bucks apiece.

I would have thought there was a market for prohibition era booze but hundreds of bottles have been collected from a NY sunken wreck for years. The stuff just piles up in the garage.

As to the article I'm sure the woman is wrong. The wreck will be identified and probably pretty soon. It's going to become a great field trip for divers eager to explore a wreck without putting on a suit.

Must not get out to the Great Lakes much. Off the top of my head I can think of two on Lake Michigan. The "Three Brothers" was a steamer that ran aground off of South Manitou Island in 1911. Winter storms quickly buried it. Up until 1996 it was completely buried until winter storms scoured several acres of sand away from the island to reveal the wreck again, this time in roughly 14-45ft of water.

The other one I don't remember much about. It was near Big Sable Pt Lighthouse six or seven years ago. We were camping at the nearby campground and there were signs talking about the wreck on the road that lead to the lighthouse. Funny thing was that when I walked out to the wreck site, sand had pretty much covered it back up.
