A Palin/Bachmann ticket would set a new record for lowest voter turnout on both sides. Nobody could take such an election seriously!

I'm okay with this. Her rabid disdain for the "liberal media" will prevent her from sharing any of her plans or ideas with the voting public and therefore she'll suffer the same fate as Mitt Romney.

A national exit poll conducted by CNN asked voters whether Palin was a factor in their voting. Of those who said yes, 56% voted for McCain versus 43% for Barack Obama.

At first I thought that was just a hugely misleading statistic, but I looked it up and 60% of 2008 voters said that Palin was a factor in their voting. If that 56% number is true, then 33.6% of all votes were basically voting for Palin. That is kind of scary, actually

Is Sarah Palin the new Ronald Reagan?

In the sense that Reagan was also a grifter who used populist rhetoric to sway low-info voters?

Perhaps but she's like a low level carnie grifter type while Reagan was more like the Billie Mays of fake populist BS.

TL,DR?

Never fails to surprise me that people exist who don't realize she was just in it for the money.

Why do these people even consider her a politician at this point? Where was she in 2010 or 2012, why wasn't she running for a Senate seat or aiming for the repub prez nomination? Politics is hard work, she can sit back in Wasila beaming an interview to Fox every now and then, merely hitting at a political career so folks will donate to SarahPAC but never actually doing anything/

Do these people not realize that Palin is *laughing* at anyone dumb enough to buy her routine?

Oh, really, come on now. Cargo cults are a bit of a stretch.

... although you know, as an analogy... okay, maybe it isn't half bad.

The primary association in cargo cults is between the divine nature of "cargo" (manufactured goods) and the advanced, non-native behavior, clothing and equipment of the recipients of the "cargo". Since the modern manufacturing process is unknown to them, members, leaders, and prophets of the cults maintain that the manufactured goods of the non-native culture have been created by spiritual means, such as through their deities and ancestors, and are intended for the local indigenous people, but that the foreigners have unfairly gained control of these objects through malice or mistake.[1] Thus, a characteristic feature of cargo cults is the belief that spiritual agents will, at some future time, give much valuable cargo and desirable manufactured products to the cult members.[1]

Yeah, i can see it, I guess.

She's hot, she's blue collar, she's electable.

This right here is the biggest problems the GOP face:

1) Optics over metrics. They value appearance over substance and illusion over reality. When has it EVER mattered if a president was "hot"? Never.

2) Brawn over Brains. This idea that humbe, "blue collar" roots are more important than someone who understands the world and studies matters important to the times and important to proper governance of a country the size and influence of the U.S. I'm not saying a plumber COULDN'T make a good president but that shouldn't be their only farking experience.

3) Electable. That is the dumbest, most subjective reason to vote for anyone and is often used for candidates that don't really have any other compelling accomplishments or positive selling points.

Gay marriage? Palin opposes it. But she is also a strong advocate of states' rights, and I'm betting she'd be fine with letting states and their voters grapple with the issue on their own. Remember that all of America didn't swing toward approval of gay marriage on Nov. 6. Three reliably blue states and their voters did. If she were smart, Palin would recruit a member of her impressive gay fanboy base - yes, she has one - to help run her campaign. I nominate Kevin DuJan of the widely read gay conservative blog HillBuzz, a Palin stalwart since 2008.

So if I have no farking clue behind the concept of DOMA I can get a job at the LA Times too?

This is terrible. Please Republicans, don't do this. I mean, this would actually create a real chance of Ms Palin being POTUS. The Democratic nominee might get caught with a dozen dead hookers or three or four live boys - and that would make the race too close to call. I can't take that chance. Please, remove the possibility and bury her in a hole outside of Vegas or something. Just in case.

At first I thought that was satire but as I read on I suddenly realized the author was serious. Holy crap!

I think it's really a shame the repubs didn't pick Palin or Santorum or Bachmann as their standardbearer this year. The exten of the disaster would have been even more striking and there would be absolutely no question that the lurch to the right is a catastrophic strategy for the GOP. It would have saved us all four years of derp.

2012-11-17 07:07:06 PM
FTA: Palin can more than keep up with the Democrats in appealing to voters' emotions. Hardly anyone could be more blue collar than Palin, out on the fishing boat with her hunky blue-collar husband, Todd. Palin is "View"-ready, she's "Ellen"-ready, she's Kelly-and-Michael-ready.

A Palin "war against women"? Hah! Not only is she a woman, she's got a single-mom daughter, Bristol, to help with the swelling single-mom demographic. On social issues, Palin, unlike Romney, has been absolutely consistent. And let's remember that most Americans, whatever their view of choice, disapprove of most abortions.

So, she's down to Earth and blue collar (more than anyone?!) AND she fits in with Hollywood elitists, including an open lesbian.

And the single-mom demographic will vote for the party that routinely demonizes single moms because they can relate to Bristol Palin?

"Furthermore, looks count in politics, and Palin at age 48, has it all over her possible competition, including Hillary Rodham Clinton, who will be 69 by election day 2016 "

Oh dear god what I would pay to watch Palin try and debate Clinton.

Ever since the 1990s, Republicans have been looking for the next Ronald Reagan.

Yeah, and the democrats found him, and ran him. He's won the last two elections.

Sarah Palin is the new Ronald Reagan: charming and affable and unwilling to back down if she's right. I can't see what's wrong with that.

It's not going to happen. Once she quit as governor of Alaska, her career in public office was sunk. If she can't hack a full term as governor of a state with fewer people than the city of El Paso, why do people think she's willing and ready to lead the whole country?

She also won't run because she'd have to debate in the primaries, where even the lamest GOP candidates would eat her lunch. That's why she didn't run this time. Because Romney, Gingrich, and even Perry would have made her look like a buffoon.

Of course, she'll tease people with the idea to keep the PAC going. Then, she'll put out another book so she can launder the PAC donations into her own pocket.

The article mentioned her views on states' rights while discussing her views, and said that she was against it but she might like states deciding it. Well gay marriage isn't a states' rights issue, it's a citizen's right issue, to practice their fundamental right to marry who they wish. Interracial was first allowed by certain states, but it was then allowed nation-wide because it was infringing on the fundamental rights of all the states that banned it. Gay marriage should either allowed nation-wide by a ruling of SCOTUS or by congress. The former is much more likely to happen, but in either case it would be allowed nation-wide. There is absolutely no reasonable defense to gay marriage bans, and so it should be allowed everywhere, not forcing gays to either move to those select few states or staying unmarried.

Now see, I said very clearly throughout the Republican primaries that Sarah Palin wasn't only the GOP's best hope to defeat Obama in 2012: she was their only hope. Instead of listening to the advice of people like me, they nominated the guy who seemed most electable to them. Where did that get them? An historical drubbing. That's because Palin Americans won't get out to vote for anyone but one of their own.

And people accused me of "trolling." Harumph.

Heed this advice well, conservatives: you want to win in 2016, your only hope is Sarah Palin. Especially if Hillary runs. She is your party's next Ronald Reagan.

Back in the day they were made of cork or rattan or something like that. And with about as much stability and support, IIRC. They were the first and last heels I ever wore, and the ones I first broke my ankle falling off of.

2012-11-17 11:28:10 PM
[blinks stupidly]

Mmmmrff, 1 cubic inch of lead weighs A, volume of wedge heel sandal in cubic inches x 2 = B, solve for total weight X.

I, I, I n-n-n-never took basic physics in high school (did we even HAVE it!?) and I've forgotten all my geometry over the intervening almost 3 decades.

Halp :(

Oh dear, Gyrfalcon :(

I never wore those horrid wedge things, just standard types of high heels. I guess my luck with the things has been because they HAD to be absolutely perfectly balanced [long axis of shoe heel must match 100% with long axis of lower leg through bones of heel] or I wouldn't wear them.

I had to feel as if I were tippy-toeing barefoot on a stone floor. It's hard to explain properly.

Immediately after the 2008 election, I thought Palin could be a serious contender in2012. I figured she could go back to Alaska and finish out her term as Governor in relative obscurity, all the while surrounding herself with the best policy experts the GOP could throw at her. She'd study up on all those things that flummoxed her in her debate and interviews. She'd have a solid term as a state executive under her belt. After her term ended, she could transition to a higher profile position on the national scene, travel abroad to shore up her foreign policy cred. Two years out of the spotlight, studying. Two years putting what she learned into practice. She could've had a serious shot in 2012.

But, of course, she went for the easy, big money and reality TV.

Jesus, really? I'm serious when I say that I'm an Independent. I believe we need both Parties to exist, because no one Party and no one candidate will ever have 100% of the correct answers. They may have all of the answers I agree with, but that doesn't make them correct. Anyway, the problem is that the political Right has turned into a bunch of assholes who think the solution is to find the biggest assholes they can, run them for office, then call it a "conspiracy" when those assholes are not elected. UNtil these people grow up, I can't support a single one of them. Huntsman would have been the exception to the rule, but they laughed the poor guy off the stage. If they had ru HIM instead of the Other White Mormon™, he may have actually won, bu even losing, at least it wouldn't have been such an embarrassing defeat.

This 'Let's Dust Off Sarah Palin's Cootch And Put Her Out There As A Potential Presidential Candidate' thing is exactly why these jackasses aren't getting votes. Are they really this stupid, or are people like the Koch brothers just paying Fox and their cohorts to portray these as good ideas?

FTA: In 2008, Palin, running as my party's vice presidential candidate, was widely supposed to have cost John McCain the election. But that wasn't so. A national exit poll conducted by CNN asked voters whether Palin was a factor in their voting. Of those who said yes, 56% voted for McCain versus 43% for Barack Obama.

Wow. The author can't even understand what basic exit polls are implying, and yet she's writing for the L.A. Times.

Those 43% of Democrats who cited Palin as a reason for their voting? I'm sure a goodly amount of them were people like my father, an independent who had never voted for a Democrat for president before. He's an alumnus of the Naval Academy and greatly admired John McCain (still does for the most part). But then Palin was chosen as his running mate and she revealed herself to be as aggressively and willfully ignorant as she is, and my dad had no choice. He said if John McCain could make such a stupid decision for political purposes, he couldn't support him; who knew what McCain would do once in office for political expediency? And to have that woman an octogenarian's heartbeat away from the most powerful position on the planet. . . Obama was the only responsible choice.

The GOP seems to think the only way to win elections now is to excite their ever-shrinking base. The Democrats realize there's another way: lure away Republicans and independents tired of the bullshiat the GOP is trying to pass off as paté.

It would be like the laser grid in Resident Evil. Sarah would jump and twist for a while, then Hillary'd slice her into neat little chunks that flop and twitch all over the podium.

/the chunk with the eye would reflexively wink for a few seconds while the lips would strain to form a final "You betcha."

please please please please run Sarah Palin for president. Please. This witch has as much chance getting elected to the Presidency as I do, and it would be fun watching the democrats and pundits pour hot oil over the walls

jake_lex: Sarah Palin will do the same thing in 2016 she did in 2012: she'll hint that she's running for President, collect donations from the rubes, and not run.

And she will do that again in 2020. And 2024. Etc. etc.

Because she's a con artist.

Every post after this is irrelevant.

WI241TH: born_yesterday: I'll vote for her.

If she lets me have sex with her daughter.

I promise.

The slutty one with a kid or the angry homophobic one?

The one with downs.
