(ESPN)   At this point, Gary Bettman has handled the lockout so poorly this might actually be a compliment   (espn.go.com) divider line 54

Tryfan: I almost wish the players could win one of these labour disputes just so the smug people who spout off "blame Buttman" without having any clue whatsoever as to what is going on could find out just what kind of a disaster that would be.

Let's start with dropping down to three (max) Canadian teams first, shall we?

Lolwut? Care to elaborate on that derp?

N0 back-diving contracts. 5% variation in wages yearly. - Players must concede this. These contracts need to go.

"Make Whole" provision. If the owners signed it, you pay it. Otherwise the players should not bother maintaining any integrity to the contracts they ever sign in the future. This money comes over and above the 50% revenue shares until they're all paid off.

50-50% money split.

Move unprofitable hockey teams.

These 4 things will make hockey better.

He's sort of correct. Bettman instituted financial systems that helped keep teams like Ottawa and Edmonton afloat during those lean years when the Canuck dollar was worth about 60 cents US. However losing three Canadian teams just would not have happened. Also financial aid was not unique to Canadian teams.

The Bestest: JosephFinn: Man, it takes a lot to make Roger "Union Buster" Goodell and David "I hate black people having fun" Stern look good. And yet, Bettman manages it.

what's Selig's derisive middle name?

ElwoodCuse: Gary Bettman is bad at labor negotiations but it's undeniable what he has accomplished for the NHL during his tenure.

The NHL, warts and all, is far better off today than it was in the early 90s when it was a 21-team league with an incredibly limited footprint that needed gate receipts to make their money.

It's good that there are 30 teams. It's good that they are in non-traditional markets. The sport IS growing. The global talent pool is bigger than ever. The solution to the league's problems is NOT to take the bottom 10 teams in attendance and move them to Seattle, Milwaukee, Quebec, Hamilton, Saskatoon, whatever.

I really wonder if that's because of Bettman or in spite of Bettman. I can think of maybe three good things he's done in his entire tenure - the Winter Classic (and HBO special), the on-ice changes after the lockout, and ...I dunno, the NHL Network/Center Ice? Welfare for the Canadian West teams?

But think of the bad he's done. The list of transgressions is nearly endless: The horrible TV deals with Fox and ESPN that starved viewership numbers and insulted Canadian fans; putting too many bad teams in terrible markets; the whole Coyotes situation - including the Gretzky thing, don't forget about how the league handled that; the bullshiat with Lemieux, Pittsburgh, and Crosby; personal vendettas with Jim Balsillie; Alex Radulov and the KHL; Todd Bertuzzi and Marc Savard - hell, the whole Colin Campbell "Wheel of Discipline" era; Derek Boogard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak, and concussions in general; and last, but not least, the FARKING GLOW PUCK. I mean, seriously, how can anybody say that anything has gone right for Bettman? The only reason the league has improved is because of the rebound of the Canadian dollar, about three shrewd marketing ploys, and a halfway decent social media policy. Oh, and the FANS.
