Are you joking? The University of Memphis men's team has been the most popular sport team around here for the last 40 years at least. Memphis has always loved basketball and over the past decade the grizzlies have been firmly embraced. I'm sure soon enough if the Grizz keep winning they'll be drawing 18,000 + every game just like the Tigers do.

I was in Memphis a year or two ago and the local station was doing a spot about Penny Hardaway. Memphis loves their college basketball team.

Meanwhile, the Bucks are 5-2, coming off a dismantling of the Pacers, should be able to handle the Hornets tonight

Palmer Eldritch: If the Celtics can't win it (and unless they figure out a way to keep Pierce and KG rested during the season, they can't) I'll be rooting for Memphis. They're big, play crushingly tough defense, and make some sweet post moves- what's not to love? Also, they're not a team you can intimidate, either- Jalen Rose put together a top-five list of NBA guys you don't want to mess with, and two were Grizzlies (Tony Allen and Z-Bo). The Knicks tried to get chippy with them last night and it failed spectacularly.

Not only that, they're not a major market at all, so it gives us small market fans hope that the NBA does care about small market teams not named OKC or San Antonio

Despite their good start, I can't be the only one who gets the vibe that this team is going to be like the Western Conference version of the Atlanta Hawks, right? They look real good for a while, but end up with a mid-seed somehowand get up getting bounced in the conference semis, year after year after year.

No because the hawks were offense first during their "runs". The griz have been defense first with the occasional offense showing up. The difference this year it looks like Conley took the proverbial step and its making the offense click. Its a 20th century line up too, a massive front court. Nobody has 2 high quality big men anymore, even pre heat small ball. On paper the heat don't match up well, but if all 3 of the heat stars show up for a 7 game series I can't see the griz winning.

My main thing is how do they match up against their own conference e.g. the Clippers, the Thunder, the Lakers, etc. I know they've already beaten the Lakers and Thunder already but I'll admit, I don't keep up with the Grizzlies in great detail. I know some of their players (Randolph, Conley, Gasol are the three I can name off the top of my head)and I do know that they are geared towards defense more, but I guess I threw my comparison out there because they still seem like they as good as they look, they're still going to be the best of the also-rans. Can they beat these teams in May?

The Lakers do exist but its impossible to judge them yet. Nash has played something like 1-2 games, howard is still not 100%. They have a new coach. To be honest, OK think they are a 2010-2011 Miami heat team BH it older. So I thinking they fail in wcf or 2nd round. Thunder match up well but they are still adjusting to no harden. To be fair the griz pretty much stated the same, same with spurs which makes it really easy to guess how well they will do. I am still not sold on clippers Jordan and griffin playing defense this well all year. But like you said so much of the post season is based upon seeding

They're a defensive minded team that creates turnovers and can score on the break. Rudy Gay seems primed to have a breakthrough season, and Randolph is one of the strongest guys in the league. They have a chance to make a real run in the west, but they may be hampered by a lack of depth.
