Seriously that. AC is definitely one of the most annoying shows out there. Same lame "plot" each and every time. The father should just go back to being a wife beating alcoholic. That's about all he's good for.

First time I saw a listing for that show I got all excited, but then I found it was the bike kind of chopper instead of the helicopter kind.

Oh there's plenty of that stuff on PBS - what I get for free over the air.

Actually I have to agree with you. I can't stand the NBC Olympics for same Cancer ridden parent/wife/ story playing in the background.

I liked it better when it was 'Fat Hillbilly Family Can't Stop Yelling.'

2012-11-17 02:28:24 PM
This show is one of the clearest representations of dysfunctional family relationships I've ever seen.

There's a depth to the drama that's missing in pretty much every other show of its kind. And there's a solid through-line narrative of a son surpassing a father, yet still genuinely wanting his approval. It's a story about generations, one of self-delusion, and the next trying to understands and develop.

Also, they make big chunks of art out of metal.

I guess I can understand all of these comments from people who saw an episode or two, or just some commercials. There is a particular kind of production being made out of the documentary. That serves as the final and delicious wrinkle in the narrative. The show itself is an extension of the people within it. How they manipulate it to represent themselves is just more information on their character.

(I don't give a shiat about motorcycles, and I don't identify with machismo. But I do value an endeavor that sheds light on the human condition. And this has done it in spades.)

Pretty much - this. The truly sad part is OCC has become a parody of their origin and have morphed into a sad, sideshow tourist trap business.

2012-11-17 02:43:40 PM
I can't stand modern "choppers" V-twin+stretched tank+hardtail+expensive bullshiat.
If you're paying someone tens of thousands of dollars to build your bike, you're doing it wrong. My dad chopped his inline 4 Honda in the early 70s in his shed. Got it featured in a few crappy mags. Won a bunch of shows. My uncle chopped a KZ1000 police special. That was strange. I built up a nice old Triumph until my buddy dumped it in a river.

In other words, make something interesting. I'm tired of these Harley clones.

That show was new around the time my roommate with the television moved out. I can't believe it's still on. The premise of macho dudes acting like women while building toys for manchildren got old real quick about the time it became apparent that every episode was going to be a "WILL THEY OR WON'T THEY" buildup with a temper tantrum 2/3 the way in.

Good.

The best observation about this ´reality´ TV show was in a review and it was this(paraphrased):

´What´s up with all the false deadlines? These guys build custom motorcycles for a living and KNOW how long it takes. The constant alarms of ´We´re GONNA MISS THE DEADLINE AND OUR LIVES AND BUSINESS WILL BE RUINED!!!´ is nonsense´.

I never watched it regularly but after reading that I stopped altogether because the writer was correct: the show was nothing but viewer manipulation and faked drama.

As for the retarded son ´Mikie´ I hope they paid him a ton of money to act like he was missing 3 or 4 chromasomes.

The same crap happens on Restaurant Impossible. The host brings in professional designers to renovate the place, and tells them they have only 2 days and $10,000 to fix the place up. WTF? I can understand the money limit (not every show has a multi-million dollar budget), but why the 2 day limit? Is the store going to get blown up by Dennis Hopper if it's not fixed up in 2 days? The forced deadline just seems like cheap way to make the show look more exciting.

The show might have held my interest for more than parts of 4 or 5 episodes had they been building bikes for Bonneville, perhaps. Something that involved a bit more engineering skill, and a product that had to, in at least some limited sense, work well. There is often more elegance and beauty to be found in a purely functional object than one festooned with exaggerated proportions and all the gingerbread that will fit.

I've watched this off & on for it's duration. I loved the glory days of Discovery Channel when there were all of those great gearhead shows like Monster Garage, Monster House, Biker Buildoff, & American Chopper.

Yeah, every episode has been formulaic damn near from day one but it's been such a fascinating sociological and economic study.

You've got to give these guys credit for tapping in to something and really living the American dream.

You just know it, and called it.

BullBearMS: They were dead to me the moment they got rid of Vinnie.

Vinnie quit and started his own shop, they didn't get rid of him.

douchebag/hater: Good.

I don't know....

I've worked at a lot of different software shops and been on many different teams....and it's pretty much been a constant alarm of 'We're GONNA MISS THE DEADLINE AND OUR LIVES AND BUSINESS WILL BE RUINED'. Sadly, I think it's just the accepted standard for doing business. So long as you have employees who will work harder/faster/long hours - particularly if they do it unpaid - it's in the businesses best interest to constantly be under threat of missing a deadline.

AC was my guilty pleasure for a couple seasons. Yeah, it did get pretty repetative after a while, which is probably why I lost interest. Still, it was an interesting dynamic and coming from white trash myself it felt a little like home.

/haven't watched it in years
//hey! I liked Mikey. He paints now, what, like houses and such?

No one has mentioned the hideous fallout-riddled offspring of American Chopper, American Hot Rod.

I actually attempted to watch a few episodes of that attrocity, but it took the "deadline" crap to another universe. Basically, take a 6 month project and PRETEND there is a reason to try to make it in 6 weeks.

It didn't take very long for most of the best workers to jump ship. Oh, and they were quite vocal about the the quality of a 6 month build that was done in 6 weeks. Oh excuse me, I meant to say the utter lack of quality.

Mad Mark: When I was this lame ass BBQ joint near Kansas Speedway I knew they jumped the shark tank.

When they appeared on King of the Hill, they and king of the hill jumped the shark.

NYRBill: a few bikers I know laugh at that show. they spend all kinds of times on fancy details and when it's "ready" it won't even start.

Well, I was always told by the biker crowd that "chrome won't get you home".
