Is "second-term curse" BSABVR-speak for "cynical and dishonest right-wing impeachment attempt?"

Because the last Democratic President had a pretty good second-term except for butthurt Republicans trying to find anything they could to stick to him... and even their eventual "homerun" swing was barely a worthless double that ultimately didn't work and didn't seem to mean shiat to the average schmoe.

Ah, figures. I got to the part where the author started snarkily listing half-true "coincidences" and figured this was some kind of hit-piece.

How about this theory...2nd term Presidents have more TIME to have things go wrong (twice as much!) and also face vindictive partisan opposition who know their only options are impeachment or destroying the credibility of the incumbent's party completely for the next election.

Shocking, I know.

This is all further proof that the Ghost of Richard Nixon haunts all. There was never a problem with Eisenhower's Roosevelt's Coolidge's second terms. Actually Clinton's second term was the best ever for Americans, just once again the Republicans had to do a one year long vaginal ultrasound on Clinton for lying about a blowjob.

They cried WOLF until their damn lungs bled, and it's failed.

Plus, Obama has succeeded in at least two areas where Bush II FAILED. He didn't fark up the response to a major storm hitting and flooding a major city, and he got bin Laden.

Finally, the Obamas seem close enough that the President is unlikely to resort to getting some nookie from a fat intern, so they don't even have *that*.

2012-11-17 03:21:01 PM

technicolor-misfit: Is "second-term curse" BSABVR-speak for "cynical and dishonest right-wing impeachment attempt?"

Yup.

As you said, the last time there was a Democrat in the White House for 2 terms, the Republicans impeached him for marital infidelity (not illegal in and of itself [except under UCMJ, but that's a whole other box of worms and doesn't apply to most civilians anyway], but lying about it under oath is). The time before that was the middle of the Great Depression.

At some point in the next 4 years, the GOP is gonna at least TRY to impeach Obama. I'm not sure what they'll try to get him on -- maybe Benghazi, maybe Fast & Furious, maybe the upcoming "fiscal cliff," maybe entering Pakistani territory without permission during Operation Appease The Terrorists, maybe drinking milk straight out of the container -- but they'll put more effort into finding some sort of impeachable offense than they will for other things like passing a jobs bill. And since the current GOP talking point is that Obama's victory is NOT a mandate (despite winning the popular vote by about 3.5 million votes, the electoral vote by 126, and winning both by a wider margin AND with a greater total than Bush did in his 2004 "mandate" victory over Kerry), they'll probably go whole-hog before the mid-term since the only possible alternative to an Obama mandate is a GOP mandate, which in turn means that the American people want Obama to get impeached (but not for being black, because they're totally not racists and they can prove it since they have a black friend who's clean-cut, well-spoken and generally a credit to his race and YOU'RE the real racist for even suggesting that anybody anywhere could possibly see even a hint of racism in their desire to chuck 0bama out of office like a spear so they can retake the WHITE House) and the American people will reward their patriotism with massive gains in Congress for getting Obama removed from office.

/I wonder if they know that removing Obama from office will put Joe Biden in charge

as an aside, I've always thought it was kind of odd that Katrina was the breaking point for the general public on Bush. I thought his response was pretty much par for the course, but otherwise coupled with fark ups at a state and local level.

Clinton had the Lewinsky scandal.
Reagan had Iran-Contra.
Nixon had Watergate.
Johnson had Vietnam

None of them had a particularly rosy second term in office. Ike did ok, though.

You can focus on some of the other wonderful accomplishments of the 2nd term - the murder of innocent Chinese diplomats during the air war in Serbia, American casualties due to multiple terrorist attacks, the signing of the disastrous Financial Services Modernization Act, the dot-com collapse, the "pay for pardons" scandal, and the failure to achieve middle East peace. Sounds pretty farking cursed if you ask me.

Really until I got to the extrapolation of the Benghazi issue I was ok with the article. There does seem to be a second term miring of Presidents. Also pointing out some concerning issues that were held up until after the election was valid concern. But then the writer went somewhere off into derpville and really ruined the entire argument.

No Lewinsky was not as horrid as Watergate but it did cause the President to lose momentum for his second term. Which is about all I'll agree with about that sentiment. Watergate-resignation Lewinsky affair failed impeachment proceedings but devastating to Clinton's second term.

//In conclusion Obama is the wizard so that Wammy wizard better come a packin.

The same effect on Clinton's term as in: I really believe he was close to getting his healthcare initiative moving until he was hauled off to congress to lie about his affair. It was the lie that got him not the actual affair but that's another issue for another day.

Nixon, Reagan, Clinton all had 2nd term scandals

i think if there's a lesson here either A) don't do something you'll regret in your first term (hard to prevent really, it's like telling a teenager not to do something, experience matters)... or B) don't make a mistake in your second term (doubly hard, nobody gives the experienced leader any room for mistakes)

what makes Katrina interesting with Bush is that responding to crisis was his staple in his first term, if he wasn't great at anything else - you could rely on him to respond to crisis at least... that he failed on that spoke volumes, so the lesson for Barack is don't rest on your laurels

Reagan and Clinton both had completely avoidable scandals in their first terms, the lesson here for Barack is already lost since if he did something he'd regret later on it already happened regardless if we know everything yet or not

Nixon was the worst obviously, he's a unique case

that said, even Eisenhower had a scandal free 2nd term, but the opposition party won anyways, there's no guarantee of anything

At this point, it really doesn't matter what the GOP pins on Obama to weigh him down for the next four years. They're so furious that he got re-elected and that he has a squeaky clean image that they're willing to try anything. They tried graft from the stimulus, they tried Fast and Furious, they tried Solyndra, and now they're trying Benghazi. And when Benghazi ultimately fails to become a scandal or anything approaching an impeachable offense, they'll try something else, like maybe having sex with a black woman in the White House.

Or 1st-string cabinet members jump ship, leaving many cabinet positions to 2nd-stringers
