Do red light cameras in New York take pictures of the drivers/passengers through the windshield? I know that red-light cameras have different focal points, some just being the license plate, others being a larger picture of the license plate and rear of the car as it traveled through the intersection, and then there are some who take two pictures: one of the driver through the front windshield and then a rear picture of the car/license plate. Wouldn't the ticket that the guy got for the second red-light incident have pictures showing who was in the car, the velocity of the vehicle, and other relevant data to back up his claim that it was a joyride?

Besides, aren't cars towed to impound lots and not driven by people? It seems to me that if it was going to the impound lot and a cop was driving it, then it really was a joyride and someone just wanted to try out a Mercedes.

I'll just assume that there's a second article with more information.

A police officer admitted planting evidence to gauge her reaction? And wasn't immediately fired? That kind of stuff would torpedo an entire career. In a lot of departments; if an officer can be tied to even a lie by omission, that officer immediatly looses their job.

I experienced something similar. I had called 911 to report having found the body of a relative and the local police were the first on the scene and while one of them was checking the body for signs of foul play the other stood around with me, soon sniffing the air and asking if he smelled marijuana. Neither I nor the deceased relative had ever been users of marijuana, he just wanted to see how I would react to the implication... with a dead family member down the hall.

It would seem that the NYPD thinks a little too highly of itself: first you have a couple of decades of police procedurals on the TeeVee portraying the NYPD as a bunch of heroes and those that question them as a bunch of meddlers that love criminals. Then you have 9-11, where it was actually the fire department that did the heavy lifting. And now you have a mayor, Mike Bloomberg, that coddles them because he too, is an authoritarian piece of shiat.

With all that said, can we now just admit that the NYPD is a bunch of farking scum? Is it that hard, after their officers shot nine innocent people to get one shooter? Or stopped and frisked people based solely on race? Or lied on their stats to make it look like the crime rate was going down when in fact it wasn't?

In Massachusetts a guy was just arraigned on felony wiretapping charges for having his girlfriend record him getting a speeding ticket.  No reason these apps have to be legal if police don't like them.

If they're smart they'll fight it. They usually use those cheap scare an ignorant citizen into a plea but always drop the charge if the citizen is spoiling for a fight because they know that law would get curbstomped in an upper court

And the windows were flat, so easier to produce in laminated type. Point being not all car side windows are tempered glass, even old beat-up Fords. :)

By 35,000 do you mean $44,744 while in academy and going up from there?

Looking at that sliding scale, it seems NYPD officers get better pay than most US military officers. Of course, you have to live in New York, and work with its worst people, but their pay is higher than a comparable lieutenant or captain (ensign or lieutenant if you're Navy) even after you consider the DoD's BAH, BAS and other benefits.
And MUCH higher than any comparable enlisted man is making.

While most cars use tempered glass for the side and rear windows, many modern cars are starting to use laminated glass, like what is used for windshields,for at least the side windows, and many on the back glass. Mercedes is one of the manufacturers doing this. Volvo is another, and many SUVs have it as well. It's considered safer in a rollover accident.

Those are front windshields. By law, they are made of a "sandwich" of glass/plastic/glass to prevent something like a rock kicked up by a truck from spraying glass at your face while you drive down the highway. That is why you can get a big crack in your front windshield but it stays together.

Side and rear windshields aren't required to be of the same material.

Glass by itself, whether tempered or untempered, has very predictable failure modes. In fact, untempered glass is so predictable in the way that it shatters that you can make stuff with it:

Those are my very first attempts at making projectile points. very first one at the top left, then going in order clockwise. The last two were supposed to be a knife blade like Oetzi carried, but in my inexperience I snapped the large blade, so I turned it into an arrowhead and a spear point.
