When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.

Vaneshi: log_jammin: alienated: The Sol system Our stellar system is called a solar system as the star is named Sol.

I was going to say that, but wasn't 100% sure it was correct.

Yep, 3rd planet in the Sol system, named 'Terra' (or Dirt if you prefer); which is kind of ironic they'd name their planet as such because the majority of it is water.

Um, no. The planet is a giant ball of rock with a thin covering of water in places.

The solar system.

Or. Sol.

cman: EvilEgg: The Sun's name is not Sol, it is The Sun, just like the The Moon is not Luna and The Earth is not Terra. Those three are special because the are ours. I am pretty certain the Solar System is in the same category.

All I know is that Latin-dick suckers wont settle for anything less then calling earth Terra or our solar system Sol

Considering all the other planets are named after ancient ROMAN Gods, it would certainly fit to name the sun and Earth after the latin words for sun and earth.

Plus Terran sounds better than Earthling.

crab66: The solar system.

Or. Sol.

What about those other solar (sol) systems we have been finding?

Sol means sun(obviously) when a star has other planets, they are called solar systems. Hardly a specific name.

We should call it

picturescrazy: Vaneshi: cman:

It's called Earth you Latin lovin bastard

Yes, Earth in modern parlance which still means we called a planet whose major constituent is liquid water... 'Dirt'.

I think It's a safe bet that the earth is not mostly water.

It's not unusual for people to refuse to look past the surface.

Mixolydian Master: What about those other solar (sol) systems we have been finding?

Actually, "Sol" is the Latin word for our sun. The latin word for stars in general is "Stella". So technically other systems are either stellar systems or star systems, not solar systems.

But really, I don't know if anthropological nit-picking about this is even necessary. The evolution of language is a fluid thing with very few (some would say none) absolute rules. When it comes down to it, we basically settle on names for things because they "sound right". If most people think "Sol" or "The Solar System" or whatever sounds right, that's what it will wind up being called in the future.

And then there's the larger long-term issue of whether or not the human race will eventually come to all use the same nomenclature for things like this; basically which language will "win" and become the language of the human race as a whole. This is so far off that none of us have any possibility of being able to answer that question, so why bother in the first place?

Of course you like it. Terran is much more grander than our Germanic words like "man". English is a pathetic language that is obscene and unsophisticated. We need to fight against the spread of that uneducated language.

We should call it "The spawn point for all evil" and be done with the charade.
