Scorpitron is reduced to a thin red paste: There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves Ayn Rand.
whizbangthedirtfarmer: log_jammin: EvilEgg: One of the parts of LOTR that annoyed me the most was that Gimli was portrayed as a buffoon. I'd hated to see the entire dwarven race (species?) portrayed that way.I didn't see him as a buffoon. he came across to me as a short Worf, who spoke a little more. I didn't read the books, so I can't compare the two versions thoughI don't think Gimli was portrayed as a buffoon in either the novel or the movie. He was perceived as a buffoon by the elves and completely misunderstood by the humans. I think the elves sum up their perspective on Gimli nicely when they capture the team as the walk through the woods, pointing out that Gimli sounded like a tank.
Old enough to know better: Is MacKellen a Tolkien fan though? He may just be confusing the stories more childlike sense of adventure (you know, what with it being a children's story and all) for comedy. My guess? The trilogy will start out fairly light, and get progressively darker as it approaches the third film.
