I didn't see him as a buffoon. he came across to me as a short Worf, who spoke a little more. I didn't read the books, so I can't compare the two versions though

I don't think Gimli was portrayed as a buffoon in either the novel or the movie. He was perceived as a buffoon by the elves and completely misunderstood by the humans. I think the elves sum up their perspective on Gimli nicely when they capture the team as the walk through the woods, pointing out that Gimli sounded like a tank.


Gimli in the book was more serious, but I didn't get the feeling the character was mocked in Jackson's movies (especially the extended editions). The dwarves in The Hobbit book really do not come off very well at all. They send Mr. Baggins ahead to do the dangerous work at nearly every turn, and they only become bold when near starvation or when pushed to share their treasure.

If you didn't like the way one dwarf was treated in a serious epic, you will cringe at how 13 are portrayed in a whimsical children's tale.

Old enough to know better: Is MacKellen a Tolkien fan though? He may just be confusing the stories more childlike sense of adventure (you know, what with it being a children's story and all) for comedy.

My guess? The trilogy will start out fairly light, and get progressively darker as it approaches the third film.


Should be like that. The encounter with the Three Trolls is pretty whimsical, and they shouldn't get dark until their capture by goblins in the Misty Mountains.
