Yeah, I was starting to like that show. Even if they did do stupid stuff like communicating by radio with a submerged submarine.

I tried getting into Last Resort. As a military brat, I love shows that have anything to do with the Navy or the Marines but that show was so bad. You could tell who ever wrote that show has not been within fifty meters of a base. How hard would it have been to do just a tad bit of research before writing?

2012-11-16 07:55:43 PM
Last Resort had lots of potential, but I think the 8pm timeslot on Thursday hurt them as it seemed like more of a 9pm or 10pm kind of show. It had it's stupid moments to be sure and dear god, some idiotic plot points, but the overall concept was sound.

The new show I'm shocked to find I'm enjoying quite a bit is The Neighbors.

I quite enjoy surreal comedies. The first episode was a bit rushed, so I didn't think it was going to get better quite so quickly.

We watched Last Resort purely on the strength of Andre. Andre is one of those actors that makes anything awesome. Loved his "Thief" series. Last Resort however, while an interesting premise for a movie, has had some suck-ass plotting as well as badly-written secondary characters. There was no good way to sustain the story premise more than one season. It would be nice if they wrote a wrap-up episode but if that happens it will probably be for the DVD and not air.

Never heard of either, but they both sound horrible.

2012-11-16 08:06:36 PM
Eh, I'm more disappointed in 'Partners' getting the axe.

Each episode was an improvement in the writing and the chemistry of the cast, and where it was a time filler at first, we actually were liking the show now.

That would be because 666 Park Ave is actually a privately-owned maisonette in 660 Park Ave

I watched one episode of Last Resort based on a co-worker's recommendation. I thought it came across as a cheesy prime time soap opera. Every character seemed like a caricature. The technical stuff seemed questionable at best and the plot seemed like film-student quality. Hopefully something better will take its place.

Me and Mrs Trade Secret watched the first episode of 666, never went back to it, delegated it from the DVR last week. Last Resort otoh, we have watched every episode. Its cancellation sucks. We enjoy it. Maybe it helps that I know nothing about subs and could suspend my disbelief.

/Now I'll never know what the damn SEALS did to warrant a nuke.

Last Resort was good (as far as network tv can be good. See also: Revolution)

No network tv is anywhere near as good as the hbo/showtime/cinmax are, but I thought Last Resort had the chops to get better.

Just going to tell myself it's all just a conspiracy.

The gubmint shut down last resort because Americans were getting too many anti-authoritarian patriotic vibes from the liberals at ABC. This uprising had to be squashed before it started.

This is much better than the truth; that all TV shows I like will be cancelled to make way for Dancing with the Stars and the Voice and 2 1/2 men and blahblahblah

2012-11-16 08:29:28 PM
I had never heard of Last Resort. Seems odd to cancel a show with numbers so similar to Nashville.

My wife was explaining it to me, and I can't imagine it working as a 8pm lead-in to Grey's Anatomy.
I automatically dismiss everything on ABC as 'chick show.'
I don't watch CBS because I'm tired of CSI clones and Big Bang Theory is just old geek jokes.
I don't watch NBC because I don't want to see Law & Order clones.

Breaking Bad, HBO, football, and a few shows in the Frontline, 60 Minutes groove. I wouldn't have TV if it wasn't basically free for me.

Yeah, that show's premise didn't sound like it could be stretched over 22 one-hour episodes. It would have worked better as a TV movie or a mini-series.

Never saw it; but I had the same gut reaction as I did to "Lost"--it's just too implausible for more than one season. A rogue nuke sub hiding somewhere in the world because they were mad at the US? It's an awesome idea for sure...but more than one season and the plot impossibilities were going to start piling up beyond the abilities of all but the most gifted scriptwriters. As soon as I heard about the island warlord, I knew they were over the shark tank.

Watching him chew scenery almost made the whole show worth it. And Patrick's character got fun once they let him do something besides scowl and issue threats constantly. His interaction with the French girl about cowboys was gold.

I think they've already filmed all 13 episodes. Otherwise I'd really hope for a great "F*ck you" ending from the writers like they did with the US version of "Life on Mars".

The captain and the COB are the greatest thing about the show. The rest of the characters still don't really stand out much. Still, I was enjoying the show. I think it deserved another season.

Hopefully the show can at least wrap things up with a short epilogue. Maybe just launch all the nukes.

I figure there's a chance they could tack on some kind of quick ending (like what happened with Pushing Daisies). Depending on what happens in the final episode, starting WWIII might be doable with just a quick voice-over and some CGI.

I love the guy that plays Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold, he's marvelously over the top. All the women are hot, and the villainess chews scenery as good as Alexis used to in Dallas.

I'm disappointed that Last Resort is kaput, even though it dragged a bit.

As for 666 Park Avenue, it was-- like so many ABC shows-- basically a soap opera. I watched one episode, and that episode had something like an A plot, a B plot, a C plot, and a D plot. Maybe an E plot. Infidelity was the subject of at least two of them. Like I said, Soap Opera.

How does that show have potential? The concept has potential as a movie or mini-series, but how long could they keep it going? I've been watching the show and I think the cancellation is good news.

No matter what you think of Last Resort now, do you think season 2 would have been as good?

2012-11-16 11:21:20 PM
666 Park Ave - Watched the pilot for shiats and giggles, and it was as bad as I had suspected. It's the kind of show that might work on cable if they could show more skin and violence.

Last Resort - I have mildly enjoyed this show, and I'm disappointed that it's going. There's nothing else like it, and several episodes, including the pilot, went places that I didn't imagine it would go. However, unbelievable tactical decisions, like letting the island warlord live for more than 15 minutes, have made for some frustrated viewing. The cast is stellar -- Lost-level talent. I imagine that it's a pricey show to produce, so the ratings have to be huge to justify keeping it.

Revolution - Have half-heartedly followed this one. It's another show where the decisions the characters make are frustrating. Like when the brother breaks free and runs about 20 feet and then stops in the middle of a field for no damn reason, when every creature on Earth would sprint until they collapsed from exhaustion, and of course he gets tackled immediately. And the cliches where the characters are surrounded... and then they break free! Over and over again. There's a lot of that shiat. Dumb.

The major TV networks water down their big shows just like the movie studios water down the huge blockbusters. It makes for bland programming.

See, I hated The Shield. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Not because it wasn't well-acted or well-scripted, I just didn't sympathize with any of the characters. I wanted them all to fall off the face of the earth and die. If I had tuned into No Ordinary Family after the intensity of The Shield.. yeah, I would have been like WTF is this shiat? But I hadn't. I liked the family vibe, and I liked the realistic take on how super powers really work. Superboy may have had to learn how to control himself on Smallville, but he was still a godling-in-training. The family in No Ordinary Family was much more human in how they dealt with their new powers, how they tested the limits of their new powers, how they abused their powers (as well as each other, and manipulated other people), and how they came to term with their powers, with each other and with other people.

Show should have been on for at least 2, 3, 4 years. Perfect family fare. Lots of room for growth. And I liked seeing Ben in a superhero setting more worthy of him than the Fantastic Four cash grabs.

Sucks. Never watched Last Resort, but I've watched 666 every week more or less because my household also watches Revenge and Once. I'll grant you that the pilot and the first few weeks of 666 were kind of weak, milling around aimlessly with mild John Locke horror, but the last few weeks have been excellent. The show really found its groove after week 4- kind of has the right mix of basic-cable acceptable horror, the right amount of cliffhanger-yness and the right amount of interesting plot hooks. It just took them a while to get there. I'm positive that the last episode of the season won't have any resolution, so that's a bummer.

I watched the opener for a goof, but damned if they didn't hook me with byzantine plotting, interesting takes on old charters and stories, and a lot of style, plus a great cast. I love the guy that plays Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold, he's marvelously over the top. All the women are hot, and the villainess chews scenery as good as Alexis used to in Dallas.

First season of 'Once' was decent. This season is a dreadful cavalcade of Disney characters. Too bad.

That's because they're pulling the same crap they did with "Lost". They've done away with the idea of a main character, lest any one actor start demanding big bucks.

Last season was simply amazing. Mesmerized me from start to finish. This year has been entertaining so far, but the lack of any main character to track is starting to make me lose interest.

/FYI- Season one is on netflix.

fusillade762: NeoCortex42: Hopefully the show can at least wrap things up with a short epilogue. Maybe just launch all the nukes.

THAT would be awesome. Ending the show by starting World War Three would be a great troll move by the writers.

Panning back to see the cast of "Big Bang Theory" playing "Last Resort" on XBox and yelling at Raj for the initial Pakistani salvo.

Glad The Neighbors got picked up. That show is much better than it has any right to be. Also, screw the haters - this season of OUaT has been damn good. I loved the scene with the mad hatter, Rumplstiltskin, and Dr. Frankenstein commiserating to make the queen evil. And Reneé from True Blood is an amazing actor.

British: C'mon I was watching Last Resort! That was a fun show.

That and that Asian chick that looks like an anime character(from Terminator: SCC) was on it!

when was she ever on Terminator : SCC? she was on Dollhouse. a separate show that aired the same night on Fox.

or was that the joke?

I always thought Last Resort would have worked best as a mini-series or single season series, but I still think they could have made a long-form series work. What I was hoping for was a major shake-up at the end of the first season. Maybe the President and the rest of the bad guys make a completely open power grab and the sub starts acting as the best hope for the return of democracy, or something.

she looks like a mix between the chick who plays Teyla and Quincy Jones' daughters.
Is she black?

It's not 1860 dude.

She's hot, who cares about the race of her parents.

The Man Who Laughs: When I first heard about No Ordinary Family I was pumped. I was straight off watching The Shield, and was looking forward to some Vic Mackey with superpowers action. Instead, I got The Commish with superpowers which was a lot less interesting to me, though I did enjoy watching the wife and her lab assistant. On the whole, I was disappointed.

It got a lot better, once Lucy Lawless, Rebecca Mader, Eric Balfour and Tricia Helfer showed up as bad guys. The best character IMO, was the son, JJ. His powers were the most realistic, and even though they seemed like the lamest, he managed to do a lot of awesome stuff with them, even taking down the main bad guy in the finale.

I liked her cop look.

It was cool. And she was hot. It just wasn't this:

It's like the difference between Madonna with platinum hair and Madonna with dark hair......... Madonna with dark hair has always blown Madonna with platinum hair away. Gretchen Mol was pretty as a blonde, sexier as a brunette. That's just me, though.

Agreed. Just like Mandy Moore looked 1000X better as a brunette than a blonde. On the other side of the coin, Britney should never, ever be allowed to change her hair color to anything other than blonde. EVER.

OMG, the butthurt generated from that ending would actually start a real WW III.

I guess I'm the only one who saw 'Last Resort" as anti-Obama propaganda.

"Oh the President gave us an order to kill some nice people, but we're 'Real 'Mericans' and would never do that. Oh look now the President is trying to kill us." I just would not support garbage like that.

I never saw the show, so if I inaccurately described it, then there ya go.

There were hints of that from the Admiral during the negotiation episode. Pretty sure that's where it was going.

Personally I thought that Last Resort was a trip into the future if Romney had been elected, based on his foreign diplomatic encounters when he was running for president. Given the election results they no longer need Last Resort. He seems to be the type of person with a short temper and if pushed he very might well nuke Afghanistan or Iran without carefully and fully considering the consequences. Of the two, I feel, Obama is less like to 'push the button.' Lets face reality here. If anyone pushes the button, the planet will be sent back to the stone age or further.

Seeing the 50's film or reading the book "On The Beach" will make the result too real for most any person. It is enough to give anyone nightmares for a month, even though there is not a single battle shown nor a single person is shown dying. If it is out on DVD and you watching, you will go to bed in stark terror. Without a doubt it is one of the scariest films ever created because it is so possible and real. It is a film you may not want to watch alone.

Disagree with Gretchen Mol as a brunette. She looks more "natural" blonde. Wonder what her real hair color is though.

Idiots like you claimed Reagan would get us into WWIII. Guess what? Didn't happen.

Obama's more likely to get us into WWIII by letting everyone else run wild, just as US isolationism did for the first two world wars.

Last Resort started well, but suffered from making the skinny island crook guy an enemy. If you're meant to be taking on the US government, you need to be strong enough not to be dicked around on a weekly basis. by some skinny guy who can't button up his shirt.
