The speculation about holiday budgeting is better.

Because a quick look at the various "UFO" clips seems to indicate that some are bugs, some are bits of dirt or other wind-borne debris, and some are rocks being tossed across the camera's field of view while people point at them. Seriously, those are some of the saddest "UFOs" I've seen in my life.

2012-11-16 03:54:06 PM
If they show up even semi-regularly, why wouldn't you set up a camera in a different location, watching the same patch of sky?
That way you'd be able to rule out any localized bugs or debris.

WayneKerr: "Explain localized debris."

You basically did. A shredder or drill or sander or fire or god-knows-what, launches very-small particulate matter into the air, where it can be carried around on air currents like a small scale version of a plastic bag on the wind. If it's vaguely reflective debris, you can easily get the glints that the 'original cameraman' is ready to call fire from a "thruster". And small-scale air currents and very light objects can do some pretty wild zipping around on otherwise-too-small-to-see air currents. At very small scales you can easily see things like, say, the metal on a camera tripod leg heating up in the direct sunlight, creating tiny little columns of hot air that can 'launch' such debris upward (comparatively) violently.

Mix in the facts that the recording involves: A) a tripod B) noonday sun C) what appears to be a location in or around a construction site

Gonad the Ballbarian: Just bugs flying in front of the camera

My thought too. Everyone just assumes they're something off in the distance. And, it explains why people looking up at the sky don't see them (although the credulous reporter assumes it's because they fly too fast to be seen by the naked eye). Also explains why they seem to be visible when filmed across an open area of the type that might, say, be inhabited by insects.

dewatson: What I don't understand is why they didn't set up two cameras next to one another, one focused at the far distance, and one focused immediately in front of the far-focused camera lens.

Not even necessary. Simplest way to debunk it is to just set up a white screen or something some distance from the camera that blocks the sky. If you see bugs flying across that, mystery solved.

I won't dismiss any "evidence" out of hand, 'cause, hey, it'd be neat if we really did find flying saucers. But that was disappointing.

Actually, professional TV cameras have high enough resolution, but lenses matter more than resolution. The camera has that as well. What the 'too low of resolution' crowd doesn't seem to grasp is that all the TV guy was able to do is point the camera in the general direction and hope he got something, this wasn't an object you saw and then pointed the camera at.

This is all covered in the news story, BTW.

2012-11-16 06:13:10 PM
Some months ago I was heading west in a commercial area just after dusk and I looked to the south and saw something just above a building a few blocks away. It was a strip of light in the air, half red, half blue, and it was tumbling around in a way that seemed quite extraordinary. For a second I thought I was actually seeing some sort of UFO.

Sadly I then recalled that just beyond that building was a park where people often fly RC planes. And what I was most likely seeing was a plane with red LEDs all along one wing and blue LEDs on the other. Sure was neat looking.

As for this video, I'm guessing either bugs flying nearby, or some other airborne debris. As others have said it doesn't make a lot of sense that they didn't go elsewhere and record over the same area. Heck, just set up a camera a few hundred feet to the left or right and see what happens. And if those are really large craft off in the distance, don't these news people think someone below them would have noticed at some point?

Looks like pieces of trash (plastic bag, etc) getting blown around, they get sent airborne by a gust of wind and then caught in thermals.

dcigary: A video similar to the followup comments of the TV station's posting of the story.

There's a nice farm at the address according to the video - plenty enough room for someone to take one of these down there on their lunch break a few times a week to fly one.

About the most logical explanation I've seen so far...

This is actually the first thing I thought of.

The way it moves it looks more like it is tumbling or being blown about than flying. It looks to me like either pieces of trash being blown around by the wind, or possibly insects whizzing by with their typically erratic flying.

Mikey1969: Znuh: Well now. That's pretty damned freaky.

Again annoyed nobody thought to take a camera with high enough resolution to allow us a better, closer view.

Well, yeah. You ever try keeping a camera pointed at a gnat? farkin' hard

Living about 5 minutes from this corner and having shot two music videos at the exact location, I can tell you truly it is VERY windy during the afternoons. It's a great shot, having a dude shredding on a Flying V with Denver over his left shoulder, but I quit using it because of the wind.
This is just airborne debris, probably from the shuttered, decaying Safeway on the other side of the road. There is a Baskin Robbins there so, hey, maybe crushed cones?

bradkanus: can't believe this video is still alive a few days later. it's flies. Hate to be the guy who says "when I worked i news," but... when I worked in news and we'd be shooting b-roll, or anything for that matter, you would see the same thing during editing when you slowed it down. It's flies. You don't notice until it's slowed down, but it's there.

So stupid.

Also worked in news. Yep, it's bugs flying around. Stuff like that calls for a re-shoot, even if it's just b-roll. Unless the story is about unidentified flying insects, obviously.

/Of course, we'd have to see the raw footage for the truth. Heh.

LOL, when you slow it down, it looks like a craft in the distance... but at normal speed, it's clearly just a bug.

Or... since you brought a second camera...
You could put it 50 feet away pointing in the same direction and then if the "mysterious UFO" doesn't show up at the same time in both camera pictures, you know it's a small object (like a bug)

But then you wouldn't have a 10 minute hunk of 24 hour news filled 'cause you wouldn't need to interview an "aviation expert"

It would look a lot more real if it had the type of motion blur that would occur with something flying at that supposed speed.

Oh please, you can't tell it's made of chrome, all you can tell is that it is reflective. A LOT of things are highly reflective, especially in the bright sunlight, including insect wings, plastic bags or potato chip bags, pieces of tin foil, and a zillion other things. You're seeing what you believe, not believing what you see.

The color also known as 'shiny gray' is called chrome. And again, yes, it could be a potato chip bag, piece of tin foil, etc...but there's an Air Force base right farking there. The Air Force pretty much created the UFO phenomenon by not paying attention during testing. So I'm more likely to believe that, instead of the ridiculous amount of coincidence it would take for not only a bit of debris to be thrown up at exactly the same time every day but for the wind to move in those ridiculous patterns at the exact same time, it's just the Air Force with some remote control toys.

/Which, like I said, should work out well for the toy industry.

PsiChick: but there's an Air Force base right farking there.

Looking at the way the object movies, though, it doesn't look like it is flying under its own power. The movement is very erratic and often looks like it is tumbling. I've never seen nor heard of a vehicle under controlled, powered flight that behaves that way.

PsiChick: instead of the ridiculous amount of coincidence it would take for not only a bit of debris to be thrown up at exactly the same time every day

They don't give time data so you don't know how close to being "exactly" the same time every day it is. It could be noon one day, 1pm the next. And coincidence has nothing to do with it. A lot of areas have very regular wind patterns and thermals whose action depends on the shape of the surrounding terrain and the ground absorbing heat. And you'd expect those heat-dependent thermals to appear around the same time every day since it takes a certain amount of time for the sun to warm the ground. Not coincidence... cause-and-effect.

PsiChick: instead of the ridiculous amount of coincidence it would take for ... the wind to move in those ridiculous patterns at the exact same time

By what degree of expertise do you deem those wind patterns "ridiculous"?
They seem pretty normal to me for thermal updrafts.

1) Ever watch a remote-control airplane? Does exactly the same thing. Less power\altitude, but the same maneuvers. I got to watch one every afternoon for a few weeks from the library window. It was pretty cool.

2) I'm not arguing it would be impossible for those patterns to form (although, living in Nevada, I've never seen anything with that kind of regularity, and our wind patterns are pretty impressive). I'm arguing that the odds of a bit of debris going up within the same one-hour time slot every day at that exact hour at any point in the city is a bit ridiculous unless someone's actually scheduling it.

Think of it this way: If you aimed your camera over your city from noon to one for a week, do you think you would see the same bit of debris fly up in the same spot moving in the same patterns every single day that week? Of course not, that's ridiculous. But if you have an Air Force base nearby, then someone might easily have decided to test their toys, which, like I said, is the general theory on what UFO sightings usually are--Air Force testing their toys.
