This is an even better method than traveling cross-country by bus to let everyone know you don't have anywhere important to be for a long, long time.

Do these people not realize that TV is probably cheaper online then at best buy? Their black Friday sale prices don't even beat Amazons normal prices

Right, but local news stations won't put you on the tee vee if you contact them to say you're going to buy a television online.

Seriously... how much can your time be worth if you're willing to spend a week of it to get a discount on a frikkin cheap tv?

/of course, from that picture...

Couldn't we just wall them off permanently instead?

The Flatscreen of Amontillado?

If you ever find yourself camping out overnight to buy something that isn't absolutely necessary for your survival, just kill yourself. You obviously have nothing to live for anyway.

Don't these people have jobs?

Maybe I just want to trample some old ladies.

Christmas isn't all about the gifts.

If they had spent that time working, they could afford to get a good television instead of the cheapest piece of crap money can buy.

2012-11-16 03:11:14 PM
People still shop at brick-and-mortar stores for Christmas? AAAAAHAHAHAHAHA

That is batshiat crazy.

Best Buy's only purpose is to let me check something out in person before I buy it over the internet.

2012-11-16 03:13:19 PM
Lucky they're in California. In any other area of the U.S., they'd freeze to death before getting the crap they're camped out for.

/Shame they're not in Minnesota, or some other cold place.

i like how all the comments are like "get a jerb"

like it is easy. it's hard enough especially if u have a criminal record

I was going to post some snark about all this, but actually took the time to read the article.

FTA:"Last year, I came on Tuesday and I was 17th in line," she said. "They only had 15 TVs."

I think I can understand where she's coming from on this one. I wouldn't be waiting in line for 3 days for a few hundred bucks off a TV, but it would really suck to go through that and NOT get your cheap TV.

2012-11-16 03:14:10 PM
Oh Jesus Christ, El Cajon...

My town never gets on the news for good things...it's always, "cop shot in neck by child-murderer," or, "Iraqi-American organized crime ring with Detroit ties busted," or, "prostitution sting nets dozens."

/FML...i bought a condo here back in 2002

I'm a pretty cool customer but that made my eye twitch a bit like Chief Inspector Dreyfus upon witnessing Clousseau's first complete feck-up.

By Christmas I'm sure I'll be in the loony bin.

What happens when someone wants to line up for Thanksgiving Day sales? Do they start two lines for that morning?

2012-11-16 03:15:45 PM
They should be lining up outside Sports Authority to get a great deal on a treadmill.

/go ahead, picture them sweating in spandex

2012-11-16 03:15:53 PM
Are CRTs, or even rear-projection TVs still sold? Is it still necessary for news articles to specify TVs as being "flat screen"?

If they are receiving any type of government benefits, they should be revoked for that week. It might not be easy to find a job, but they aren't even trying.

People like this think "opportunity cost" is what you pay to get those great videos of how to turn your debt into wealth by working at home and powering your car using nothing but water.

Sybarite:
The Flatscreen of Amontillado?

No, don't build in a flatscreen. That would be rewarding their behavior. Just wall them in with regular bricks. Airholes optional.

2012-11-16 03:16:30 PM
remember short small bursts...don't go full auto or you'll waste ammo

God knows they won't need to eat for the next week.

sigdiamond2000: If you ever find yourself camping out overnight to buy something that isn't absolutely necessary for your survival, just kill yourself. You obviously have nothing to live for anyway.

I camped out for the US PS2 launch, but only overnight. It was known that it was not going to be available for at least a week after that initial sale due to not enough being made. Also, I had reasons for getting a day one PS2 beyond merely playing games.

But waiting a week just to get a slightly lower price? Ridiculous.

2012-11-16 03:18:17 PM
So - how much are you ACTUALLY going to save, not spend mind you, but SAVE off the regular price

Regular price TV let's say $750 and they are offering 33% off - so it is $500 and you save $250. So you plan to wait in line for 168 hours to save $250, that is a great use of your time. Not to mention the expense of being there, driving back and forth to the house as you switch out with friends etc. Probably costs out weigh the "savings"

Not sure about everyone else but we have like 5 TV's hooked up to cable, some flat some older, and like 3 or 4 not being used, not wanting to wait in line for stuff

Get back to me if Makers Mark is having some type of Black Friday deal, then we can talk

Black Friday is the day I sleep in, spend the day in my jammies putting up the Christmas tree, eating turkey/dressing/cranberry/gravy sandwiches and drinking wine.

There's nothing that can get me near a store that entire weekend.

Rear projection is still a thing. You know those giant Mitsubishi 73/82/92" models? All rear projection, and they're gorgeous. 3D too, if you're into that sort of thing.

Good. This whole black friday thing has gone beyond the outer limits of stupidity.

"Last year, I came on Tuesday and I was 17th in line," she said. "They only had 15 TVs."

Followup tag is on standby when this happens to her again this year and she complains to the media.

If you need to line up for a week in order to get the best deal on something so you can afford it, you shouldn't be buying it.

If some of these people were as dedicated/committed to getting a job as they were to being first in line at walmart, they'd be employee of the month.

2012-11-16 03:21:29 PM
This morning our local TV news did a piece that had three rather large young ladies(?) That were setting up for black Friday.
They said that even if they didn't get the, whatever they were hopping for.
That maybe they would meet some cute guys.

2012-11-16 03:21:44 PM
I can conceive of nothing short of Beatles reunion* tickets for which I would camp out, or even wait in line for more than 30 minutes.

* And even then, only if it featured the reanimated corpses of John and George.

2012-11-16 03:21:53 PM
Why do people do this?

They are willing to waste days/weeks of their lives just to save 99 cents on some new brooms.

Their time is really worth that little?

I've always wondered; when someone camps out to be one of the first in line; on the morning of the sale does the store always honor this? I've seen so many videos of BF where walls of people are rushing the store/how would camping out really matter?
