Gautier says the platform was not in active production

Whether that means it's connected to the reservoir or not is another story, but hopefully that means it isn't, and that everybody aboard is OK.

2012-11-16 12:27:14 PM
Apparently the fire is out or at least contained now. The platform is non-productive, i.e. not drilling anything. They were apparently preparing it to go back into production. There is no leaking well or anything else like that.

Update: Coast Guard says fire is out. Two workers dead, according to platform owner. Two may still be missing. At least four transported in critical condition. 20-25 miles southwest of Grand Isle. Production platform, not in active production. 28 people aboard at the time of explosion.

Yeah, I don't think Black Elk Energy is going to see profits increased here. It's one of those "sign on the fourth floor of a ten-story building in West Houston" energy companies.

Well alrighty then.

It's gonna be a long process, but the US has to find a way to get off oil. There's only so much of it.

I misread another article that seemed to claim that it was not a production platform but was used for refinement. So it is an oil 'production' (extraction) platform, just not the initial drilling platform, and not in deepwater exploritory range.

Well TECHNICALLY that's not true, as things are constantly dying, getting buried under layers of soil and at some point undergoing the heat and pressure needed to become petroleum. At the current rate we pump it we'll temporarily run out (temporarily in a geologic time frame), but there will be more.....maybe just a couple of million years wait.

Just think graveyards today are tomorrow's oil fields! All those that get cremated are just selfish pricks that don't want to provide energy for the next evolutionary period of man!

I'm in gas processing and it seems that there is trend is to move that stuff out to sea. Or at the very least develop some form of non-zero offshore processing capacity to be able to load tankers directly from the field. So there's a good chance I may end up doing that stuff in the future.

Clearly, the Palestinians shot a rocket at it and caused the fire/explosion, because everybody knows offshore drilling platforms in the Gulf are 100% safe and reliable and nothing bad would ever happen to them.
