That was actually funnier than I thought it would be.

I still haven't decided whether to upgrade my new PC to 8 or just stick with 7. They have the upgrade for something like $30 if you do it before January. Or something. Meh.

If I've learned anything about Windows since 1995... skip every other upgrade.

When asked if she knew how to go on the Internet with Windows 8, she merely said, "PFFFFFT!" and started laughing uncontrollably.

Lulz.

My computer purchases serve as my upgrades. So, I'll be using Windows 7 until my current machine craps out.

This is not an operating system for browsing, this is an operating system for lying down and avoiding.

Yeah, I laughed at that more than I should have. "Who wants to browse the web with Internet Explorer? Suck. My. @ss." "Now I'm in Bing. I don't want to be in Bing."

"I feel like I'm being punished."

Lulz.

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 for $16. I don't regret it. Kind of "meh", but not the harbinger of the Apocalypse that everyone claims it is.

If you have a touchscreen (I use an HP Elitebook 2740p) then it's a huge upgrade. If not, I'd skip it.

I friggin hate Windows 8. MS totally compromised the functionality of its windows desktop OS to trojan itself into the tablet/smart phone arenas.

Actually, it seemed like a 3-way intersection between dumb, drunk and using an unnecessarily alien operating system.

One thing I don't like about the new IE app is I can't float one window on top of another, with a wide margin around it so that I can immediately hide what I'm browsing in the front window by clicking the window in the back. I guess that says more about me than about the OS, though.

2012-11-16 03:43:36 PM
It's actually better if you're drunk. Then you just don't give a sh*t, because it's not like you were going to get any work done anyway. When you're sober, it just pisses you off.

8 Sucks. Stay with 7 until they get that mess fixed.

Haven't needed to until now. It wasn't a problem until the last week or so. I use FF for Fark at work, IE8 at home.

I bought my laptop right after vista came out. now it's getting pretty old and I'll probably need a new one within the year, so I'll miss out on 7. I'm on a bad alternating cycle! I have to get off of it! Hold on laptop. Give me a few more years, will ya?

The biggest thing Microsoft/Windows has going for it is that your average cube dweller knows how to use it already.

Change that and you're taking a big risk.

I haven't tried Windows 8 yet, but it seems to be Microsoft's logical extension of Steve Job's only need one button, can't have a stylus, no need for a 7" tablet, okay to crush employees and assemblers, zen minimalist uber capitalism distrust the doctors design and life philosophies.

The tile screen is literally the start menu. It's actually very customizable.

Close enough for government work but not 100% foolproof. I can't think of any reason to change my desktop to 8 unless I was going full-microsoft across my desktop, tablet, and phone. But I'm not. My mobile stuff is Android and it works just peachy with Win7.

Tried Win8 at a store a couple of weeks ago...

For over 30 years, I've been able to sit and figure out just about any machines in a few minutes (the few exceptions were pretty much due to these machines not holding an intelligent pattern of logic in their interface).

Win8 is one of those exceptions.

Am I interested in it? Considering that the main selling point for Win7 was Media Center for my TV system, and Win8 has made it into an paid add-on, I really do not see much reason to bother.

I might give it another chance in the spirit of a tablet (when the sad sad day that I need to move on from my beloved Touchpad), but I'm hoping that something else comes around and takes over all present platforms as I have no interest for either Apple nor Android.

2012-11-16 04:04:26 PM
At this point I continue to run Windows 8 as punishment for falling for the "OMG, buy it before January!" promotion they were running.

And let's be honest, Windows 8 *is* punishment. Why would you make your OS so foreign that you make it trivial for people to jump to another OS? Surely there's still billions of dollars left in non-touch devices that Microsoft didn't need to throw us non-touch users under the bus?

Full disclosure: I did buy a Win8 Pro upgrade DVD for $40 from Microcenter on launch day. I don't know if I'll ever use it but it was worth $40 to have it on the shelf just in case.

Meh... my "beast/main" machine at home is running Vista without any issues. I still prefer most of the things from Vista over Win7.. I hate the networking of Win7, even 3.1 was easier to network without issues..
