I think the overall issue many folks have is a) that you cannot opt out of having this particular feature, as described elsewhere in the article, and b) how most privacy functions on Facebook are set to 'lookit meeeeee' unless you delve through multiple options to say otherwise.
The app is terrible, and gets continually worse. However, there doesn't seem to be any good alternative out there aside from ignoring it completely.
