Silly me, I should have thrown pro-choice women into that list of women who don't have repeated abortions. I suspect pro-choice women likely have the fewest abortions as a group because they are best informed about the risks of sexual intimacy and their birth control options. They are, therefore, less likely to end up surprise pregnant.

I am not saying that ... you seem to be missing the subtle difference.

It is the running on a morality platform to outlaw things that you do (and will continue to do even if you successfully get them outlawed).

An example:
A worker at an abortion clinic has to run the gauntlet of extremely unpleasant protestors every day. On day one of the regular protestors sneaks in her 16 year-old daughter who got herself pregnant.

The worker thinks to herself "Well at least one protestor has realized that this isn't a black and white subject" and assumes there will be one less protestor harassing her on her way to work the next day. But guess what: the next day that woman was back at her post screaming her slogans and waving her sign.

This is different than just fake political promises. It is claiming moral superiority while also making yourself exempt from these same morals.

Remember its only his wife that got an abortion because the fetus had a horrible condition that would result in a nonviable pregnancy (*cough*ectopic pregnancy*cough*). It was only his wife that had an awful medical condition where if she didn't abort her life would be in danger. Only her doctor said it had to be done after careful thought and preparation. Only her abortion was going to be long, painful and traumatic. Everyone else's abortion is totally immoral and because she was a filthy, filthy, slut.

This is one issue I have with anti-abortion people. I tell them that rich people will be able to get abortions because they will go to Europe, Canada or wherever it is legal. Now, if they really want to make it illegal, they'll do it like they do people that go to foreign countries to have sex with minors and prosecute them.. Of course that won't happen because people with money live by different rules than poor people do.

Except it is not just lies ... it is that they run on a platform of outlawing all the things that they do.

It is one thing to say "I'm not going to raise taxes" and then turn around and do it (especially if the economy shifts). It is completely another to run on a platform of "Abortion is evil (for you)" and "toe-tapping gay sex is immoral (for you)", etc.

The latter seems to be a very republican thing.

While I agree with your snark, you're not quite right about the pregnancy:
DesJarlais, a family-values conservative who rode 2010's tea party wave to Washington, testified his ex-wife's earlier abortion stemmed from medical concerns.

"... [She] was on an experimental drug called Lupron and was not supposed to have gotten pregnant. There were potential risks. It was a therapeutic," he said.

And from the FDA: "Leuprolide has been assigned to pregnancy category X by the FDA. Animal studies have revealed evidence an increase in major fetal abnormalities, increased fetal mortality, an decreased fetal weights."

So, not ectopic pregnancy, but flipper-baby.

I was reading an article about how the GOP lost 5-7 senate seats that should have been easy wins but they put up teabag whack-jobs and ended up losing the seats.

If the GOP drops all the religious nuttery and the attacks on gays and women and go back to being small 'c' conservatives they might be able to rebuild a base. But right now their base is dying off and the radical element is keeping new voters away.

I think this is what we can expect. I remember a GOP that chided the Democrats for their over-the-top social agenda, arguing that such considerations were not the function of government. The Dems did accomplish some good things, but they took it too far. I always appreciated the old GOP's "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" and "show me how we pay for this" sensibilities. They must get back to this, so that they can work with the Dems again to get anything accomplished. Moderates simply must have better choices from both parties.

The Tea Party's days are numbered. GOP strategists and leaders are reeling right now. They are being told why they really lost the election, given the hard, cold facts. The Tea Party has become a major liability and people are beginning to view the GOP as the party of stupid people. Even LA governor Bobby Jindal has said "the GOP must stop being the party of stupid." The GOP lost moderates and they have no hope of garnering the Hispanic vote with there current agenda. So they are going to have to distance themselves from the tea Party and move toward the center or lose big in the future. The red states are not enough to win a national election and so, cannot be the GOP's base any longer. They have to have moderated from blue states. Without those GOP big bucks, the Tea Party cannot survive. They may garner a seat or two in Congress on their own for a couple of terms, but then they will just fade away.
