Antimatter: rocky_howard: Flappyhead: Saw a demo station on the weekend, don't see what the fuss is about. To me it just looks like a gimmick attached to another gimmick. Honestly I think first week/month sales will be good and then it's gonna nosedive.

Isn't that what's said with every Nintendo launch ever?

NES with ROB.
GameBoy (portable itself was a gimmick)
SNES with 6 buttons.
N64 with analog stick.
GCN with innovative controller scheme.
NDS with touch control.
Wii with motion control.
Wii U with, well, everything, lol.

Yup, Nintendo always fails.

Oh wait!

Rob was a gimick, portable was not, the snes wasn't bashed for anything, the n64 and gcn were both outsold.

The DS and wii i'll give you, although wii sales did nosedive by the last couple of years.

Wii U i'm on the fence about, nothing so far seems really that interesting, but there is room for future promise. Might pick it up by the time Zelda or metroid hit though. Probably not a day before though.

Fyi
The n64 controller changed the entire industry.

Those three are gimmicky, the rest are not. And do you ever get tired of trying to put words into peoples mouths?

The saddest thing is that given the money Nintendo made off of the Wii, they could have done a full-on next generation system with state of the art graphics. Instead, they've released a current gen+ console with a controller with a screen on it. Casuals won't buy into it because it appears to put motion controls in the backseat, and hardcores won't get it because they already have a PS360 setup and don't see the need to buy another current gen system this late in the lifecycle.

The only good thing about this system is that it help to push the non-budget PS3 and 360 models under $200, preferably under $100.

/why the fark does 6-7 year old hardware still retail for up to $300?!?

AdamK: NeoCortex42: AdamK: i think the universal remote feature and maybe even their tv service will become the norm next gen, or at least consumers will expect it from the others

Next gen? What about this gen? It's not really a new concept:

Can you play halo with that?

So you have one controller for handling media and one for playing games. With the WiiU, you've got one controller for single player games (the tablet), one type for multiplayer (the Wiimote/Nunchucks), and another controller for alternate control schemes (Classic Controller).

If I'm just watching tv/videos, I'd rather use a wand-style remote than a cumbersome tablet.

you only need the tablet for all of the above, wiimotes/pro controllers are extra and only necessary for local play

the tablet has the added bonus of coming in the box and not requiring you spend extra, it also has the added bonus of the TVii feature that aggregates all media content (cable/netflix/amazon prime/tivo/etc.), it being cumbersome is subjective - i'd trade off a wand-like device for easier-to-navigate touchscreen controls anyday

not like nobody else can't copy any of this, if Microsoft or Sony copied this setup i'd appreciate it just as much

I saw it up in the thread, but the SmartGlass offered from Xbox looks pretty cool. I noticed there was a feature that I can combine with Forza, so I'm going to check that out tonight.

what do you people define as "gimmicky"? because every definition of the word would either include them all or none at all, except if gimmicky means "I don't like it", usually for the most absurd reasons.

I consider myself a "gamer" and believe I'm pretty well aware of what's going on in the gaming world. However, I only learned about this system about two weeks ago from a mother with very young kids.

/Granted, school and training have killed my social life, so there is that.
