My first email was on hotbot. Eventually was force-migrated to lycos.com. Lost the password to the email i had and never managed to recover it, but i created 2 more emails. That was when "free" was the only option. And 10 meg space. Eventually it became paid only but people like me were grandfathered in. It recently re-opened for free emails. Still use the 2 addresses, 1 for interwebs, 1 for real life contacts and legal stuff. Lycos mail works well, never have issues with it.

With regards to Poe's law: the next step in the evolution of the Internet, is the people who grew up with it will be believe the sarcastic to be fact.
