I was waiting for this AND for the photoshops of what it'd look like in Roman times, Middle Ages, etc. Those were pretty good.

There are no ancient websites. The net is less than 1000 odd years old, still.

You know, Altavista's website isn't that ancient. That current look was done as part of a redesign after Google became popular.

I believe there were still Gopher and WAIS listings in the '96 edition. Wonder how many of those are still up.

Maddox is still around. Hasn't changed the design much. I went there to see if he was still around, and it appears that he still updates, but isn't really that funny anymore. I guess he peaked at "I've never seen a fire truck that's needs to be shaved."

There are still a lot of gopher sites up and running. Most browsers have dropped support for the protocol but the Overbite addon for Firefox re-adds support for it. Here's a gopher site where you can find most of them: gopher://gopher.floodgap.com/1/world

was lycos the one that clicks gave you chances to win cash money? Never met anyone who won but I seem to remember CBS trying to do a tie in with it right after Survivor was the big thing.
