FTA - More than 800 hedge funds and mutual funds counted Apple among their top ten holdings at the end of the third quarter, according to data from Insiderscore.com. Exxon Mobil is a distant second among top holdings, according to Insider Score, with 20 percent fewer funds counting the oil company among its top holdings. Microsoft is a distant third with nearly half the funds counting the software maker in its top ten as Apple.

Apple better hope that some of their customers don't realize that an Android phone can replace an iPhone because they'll really be screwed. I have the Galaxy Nexus and while the GUI isn't as polished as iPhone, it's a very capable smartphone.

I've been expecting the year end sell-off every since I read this back in August:

Matt Tabbi - More Evidence Wall Street is Overpaid

This is the worst yearly aggregate S&P 500 underperformance by the hedge fund industry in history, and also explains why the smooth sailing in the S&P500 belies the fact that nearly every single hedge fund manager (and at least 89% of all) is currently panicking like never before knowing very well there are only 4 more months left to beat the S&P or face terminal redemption requests. And with $1.2 trillion in gross equity positions, the day of redemption reckoning at the end of the year (and just after September 30 for that matter as well) could be the most painful yet. it also explains why, just like every other quarter in which career risk is at all time highs, HFs are dumping everything not nailed down and buying up AAPL, which as of June 30 was held by an all time high 230 hedge funds (more on that later).

In short, Hedge fund managers were going all-in on AAPL in an attempt to make their short-term numbers (and bonuses), and now they are all spooked they are going to be left without a chair when the music stops.

It's more like people who owned Ford and GM cars realising that the Japanese competition was a better deal. A lot of people thought that Android was cheap rubbish, but they're starting to recognise the value.

Apple's value over the past decade was in transforming personal electronic devices. They were pushing at the cutting edge of it. The problem they face now is that you can't do a lot with phones now to add more value to people. You could quadruple the CPU clock speed, double the camera resolution, and people wouldn't buy it. That means people aren't going to trade in their phones more often and next time they buy, they might choose value over cutting edge, because the value option does what they want.

And the iPhone is a very large amount of Apple's profit, something like 2/3rds of the company.

What Apple need is a new market to go into to replace the iPhone and iPods.

I was telling everyone to buy apple in 97. Shame no one listened. (I was 12, with no cash money to call my own)

Hell, even the Windows Phones are a better option now. Windows Phone 8 fixes a lot of the shortcomings of Windows Phone 7, and the Lumia 920 destroys the iPhone 5 in just about every objective measure (better quality camera, higher resolution and better quality screen, NFC, wireless charging built in) while only costing a third of the price of a 32 GB iPhone 5. Plus the Windows Phone 8 UI is actually doing some nice things in terms of innovating the mobile phone UI, compared to the iPhone which just gives you a boring grid of icons.

Short term Apple may be winning, but if they continue with the underwhelming product releases like they have this fall, eventually they are going to get surpassed by Microsoft and Google. Steve Jobs was relentless with perfecting their products, and I just don't see the fire and passion with the new leadership that I saw in the past. They'll coast on their current strengths for a while, but if something doesn't change they are likely going to be in decline within 5 years.

A new ad campaign for that stupid phone wouldn't hurt. That is, unless brand identity is the only thing they have going for them now, and the phone really doesn't have any new capability. I mean, I doubt Apple would release a product with no new functionality but just a different plastic case; that would be unheard of.

But this phone can take panoramic pictures! And tell you if it is raining! And is the perfect size for your thumb!

2012-11-16 08:20:18 AM
Anyone who didn't see this is a fool.

Android phones have been gobbling up market share for two years now. Apple's load has been blown.

Anytime you see a company transitioning from being an innovator to a litigator, you know they have peaked/matured and the hyper-growth is done. See also Microsoft at the end of the '90s.

Combine this with the end of the Steve Jobs mystique and, oh yeah, Samsung, and that's it. As all these PEFs and hedge funds start running for the exits, its going to get ugly for anyone still holding the bag.

Apple is already losing, Android has a much higher market share. And Google's stock is worth much more.

Apple is already losing
uh huh, that's why they have $127B in the bank, and just added $8.2B in their last "weak" quarter. which, btw, was their second best september quarter ever?

"Android has a much higher market share."
mcdonald's has high market share too, but that doesn't mean they make better burgers than the counter. android is making no money for google. in fact, android is only making money for samsung.

"And Google's stock is worth much more"
this is just... just dumb. do you realize how market cap works? do you realize that when google splits its stock (currently on hold because of a shareholder lawsuit, but announced in april) that GOOG's share price will be worth 1/2 what it is now? and that it doesn't matter except to idiots like you who don't understand math?

Both Google's and Apple's most recent quarters were bad. The difference is, a bad Google quarter means that profits were down 20%, while a bad Apple quarter means profits were up "only" 24%.

Google is in far more serious trouble than Apple. Their profits are already dropping. Things are going to mobile and Google's has no idea how to make money off of it. And there's no evidence they'll figure it out: they haven't introduced a profitable new product in a decade.

It's going to get a lot worse for them.

Huh, I worked there for a couple weeks many years ago when I was out of work. Even on the night shift, after the store was closed, the perfume smell was still strong enough to make me glad I was only there a couple weeks.

Looked up their stock... I wouldn't have expected them to pay such a consistent dividend. I guess this is one of those companies that has that kind of cash laying around after paying low wages to most of their employees.

Clothing has ridiculous margins. A shirt's raw materials are around 2cents. Making the shirt costs a few more pennies. My parents were looking at buying a gift shop years back; a shirt cost them about $1 from the supplier.
