Remove Tomb Raider, replace with Ninja Gaiden.

PROFIT

I'd quibble replacing Elder Scrolls IV with III or V, which are vastly superior. And it's missing Eye of the Beholder.

But other than that, I'm surprised the list isn't complete fail.

Arkham City made it and Uncharted 2 didn't. Yeah, ok.

2012-11-15 05:08:30 PM
List fails without Defender and Robotron.

I agree. Of course, all I remember from IV is buying it at launch and not being able to play more than 15 minutes without the game crashing. Then again, QA testing for Elder Scrolls games is always incompetent.

Morrowind was an excellent game and really stood out at the time it was released. Skyrim improved on it significantly. Choosing the middle game just seems...odd.

Time for me to rage because they didn't include Baldur's Gate 2/Planescape: Torment/Fallout 2

Forgot Dungeon Master and Dark Age of Camelot. Oh and EVE too.

List fails without my favorite games on it. It's also made worse because of the fact that your favorite games, which only losers play, are on it.

list Fails for inclusion of Wing Commander, but exclusion of X-Wing(vs Tie Fighter...or any in the series).

while WingCommander and X-Wing were out at the same time... Wing Commander was pretty weak in its attempt to simulate a 3d environment for space Combat, while X-Wing actually simulated the vast distances of space pretty well. Also... WingCommander required you to follow the script... XWing allowed you to get to the objective however you could...so long as those objectives got done.
( I was able to take down a Nebula-B Frigate with a base Tie-Fighter... I loaded two heavy bombs, slotted up from behind , took out the engines, then spent about an hour hitting it with the main blasters...just to see if the game would let me...and it did).

X-Wing was probably one of the best SW properties Lucas Arts released....far and above Wing Commander.

The main problem with it is that TIME didn't explain what criteria they used to determine "best". Some of those games (especially the older ones) are "classic" inasmuch as they were revolutionary at the time or introduced an entirely new style/genre of game, but are objectively actually kind of bad games. Ultima IV for example is an ugly pain in the ass game that actually sucks - but it was impressive in its ambition at the time it was released. It's telling that the list is broken out by decade, which indicates that importance within an era was a criteria, but that isn't explained.

Plus - FAIL for no Baldur's Gate. My God.....what a miss.

Came here to say that. Morrowind > Oblivion.

List - meh.

Yeah, but the Wing Commander series actually had Luke Skywalker in it.

Happy to see Grim Fandango got a mention but really disappointed Monkey Island and Journey wasn't on the list.

well, glad they didn't do a count down where #10 - #2 are all modern games and then they go with pacman because being retro makes you cool.

Chrono Trigger was tedious and its inclusion instead of Final Fantasy III borders on a war crime.

I was surprised that Rez was on the list. That game was a lot of fun to play, but I'm surprised that it had the popularity to be included.

People will nit pick for personal favorites, but overall I think the list was pretty solid.

/Castlevania: SotN > Castlevania
//X-wing > Wing Commander

Amen. FF3 was the best RPG ever. Chrono trigger was amazing too though

2012-11-15 05:40:33 PM
No MechWarrior 2?!

Not even Mercs?

Your list is bad and you should feel bad!

2012-11-15 05:41:45 PM

Gerrok: I was surprised that Rez was on the list. That game was a lot of fun to play, but I'm surprised that it had the popularity to be included.

The X-Box Live Arcade release of it allowed a lot more people to check it out. Also, playing it in HD with a full surround system is farking awesome.

2012-11-15 05:41:56 PM
The list needs Resident Evil 4, but other than that I'd say it's pretty solid

2012-11-15 05:42:12 PM
I used to read these kind of lists. Then I took an arrow in the knee.

2012-11-15 05:44:49 PM
It's really not a terrible list, there were a few misses and exclusions. Personally I'd add Deus Ex: Human Revolution to the list of games from the 2010's.

2012-11-15 05:45:00 PM

Weigard: Chrono Trigger was tedious and its inclusion instead of Final Fantasy III borders on a war crime.

they didn't have ff6 on this list? farking failboat.

2012-11-15 05:45:13 PM
No Elite or Bard's Tale? bah.

Props to M.U.L.E., tho. I spent centuries playing that.

/really, centuries

2012-11-15 05:45:42 PM
Video game lists suck. Stop reading them.

2012-11-15 05:45:46 PM
No uncharted 2? that was one of the best pulp adventure games i'd ever played.

The list gets a lot of the classics on there, but i'm not sure it wasn't done just to make it seem objective. If anything, they listed popular games as 'the best' and not necessarily a lot of unique titles or groundbreaking ones.

Like Halo I being on there. It was, in retrospect, a fairly terrible game in many areas, but popular because the xbox had little else at launch.

Likewise, Elder scrolls IV should probably be dropped in favor of ES 3 or 5, both of which were much better games all around.

Also, Angry birds should be no where near that list. If you had to pick a portable game to add, pick Pokemon. It broke RPG's down to it's basic elements, and made it a phenomenon with children and now young adults.

2012-11-15 05:46:11 PM
Ocarina of Time? Link to the Past?

2012-11-15 05:46:17 PM
Fails w/o Ocarina of Time.

2012-11-15 05:46:47 PM
Mega man 2 and Civilization 2 were better than their predecessors and in the same time spans.

Mass Effect 2 was better than ME3, though the multiplayer was surprisingly well done.

Was surprised to see Myth on there - I love RTS's that give you limited resources for the battle instead of the 'X-Craft' resource gather/build style. And I loved Myth.

Guess I can't complain on the metroid front, but Super Metroid was a piece of art.

2012-11-15 05:46:53 PM
No Ocarina of Time, Perfect Dark, Half-Life, Resident Evil 4, or Uncharted 2.

Big ol pile of fail.

2012-11-15 05:47:40 PM

Antimatter: Like Halo I being on there. It was, in retrospect, a fairly terrible game in many areas, but popular because the xbox had little else at launch.

I wouldn't say it was terrible. It holds up decently. It's not great, but it did do a lot to make FPS games popular on consoles. GoldenEye showed it could be done, Halo improved upon the controls significantly.

2012-11-15 05:47:50 PM

MrPerfectSU: Ocarina of Time? Link to the Past?

I have to agree here as well. Both of those are better games then Zelda 1.

Also, where is Gran Turismo? It basically made sim style racers a household thing on consoles.

2012-11-15 05:48:55 PM
Tie Fighter > X-Wing
Privateer > Wing Commander

2012-11-15 05:50:16 PM

tdyak: Battlefield 1942 (Or Desert Combat mod at the very least)

Any of the Battlefields would be worthy of one of the spots, I think. Battlefield 2 has like 3 expansions and kept adding unique items and maps. Battlefield 3 is really nice too.

2012-11-15 05:50:55 PM

Halo's controls were the same as timesplitters for the most part, and timesplitters did it first. When TS hit, we suddenly had a near perfect setup for twin stick shooters.

To be fair though, TS's controls were based upon Turok's, except applied to a second stick and blended with goldeneye style R targeting. That would later get modified by Infinity ward into iron sights targeting.

Halo was bland, repetitive, and honestly not all that great. there just wasn't any real alternatives on the xbox, so it won by default.

Also agreed. Also, super metroid > metroid

Imma let you finish, but Star Control 2 was the best video game OF ALL TIME.

OF
ALL
TIME.

2012-11-15 05:52:05 PM
Angry Birds and a Tower defense game made the list. Really?

2012-11-15 05:53:20 PM
What, no Dwarf Fortress?

/think I missed that fad
//where's the active community?

2012-11-15 05:53:21 PM
So obviously they only wanted one game from a series, but RE over RE2 (or 4)?

No Earthbound or Xenogears? Uncharted or Mario Kart?

And WTF was Rez doing on there?
