yea, go to your local butcher. a real one, not the deli counter at publix or kroger.


The closest we have to an actual butcher around these parts is "The Meat Store", Makes me feel like it really doesn't matter if I were to get it from there or Kroger... since it's probably the same selection (our Krogers use as much local meats as possible)

I have. Those are the culinary equivalent of polishing a turd. Smoked is the best but even that is pretty much a waste of time since the initial ingredient is so low quality. I've made turkeys roasted, braised, smoked, deep fried, and sous vide. None are particularly good, at least not compared to everything else.

I have not, however, had a heritage or wild turkey. I keep an open mind about them.

I have callouses so thick on the bottoms of my feet that on my left heel, the callous actually split (from the cold? dunno) and made a sizable canyon. That canyon got infected. I'm told I should brine my feet to get rid of the callouses.

Strangely, even knowing what it means, I can't help but being a bit off-put by "food" which has, as a method for impovement, the same suggested treatment as my calloused, infected foot.

imtheonlylp: I personally like to soak a few Cuba Turkey in some Greece then toss them over into my Chile. Invite friends over and Oman we have some good times until Chad has Togo Russian to the bathroom. Peru it does a number on his stomach. Yemen we have some good times no doubt.

Good. With any luck, Turkey will get involved directly with the Syrian conflict, Iraq gets involved, and turkey ends up annexing Syria and Iraq.

If there was ever a group of peoples unfit to govern themselves, it's the Arabs.

Stuff the turkey with a stick of butter and cut up a second stick into 1tsp chunks to stick on random spots on the outside. Sprinkle with lemon peppercorns. Put in a plastic cooking bag, in a disposable aluminum roasting pan, at 350 until the thermometer pops.

It won't look pretty, but you'll thank me later.

The US is trying to stay in the background because its brand is a little tarnished in Syria, so the US and its allies are working though Turkey, our closest ally that shares a border with Syria (other than Israel, whose brand is also not great among the Syrian people). This has been signaled for months with the border clashes between Turkey and the Assad regime. Just widening the funnel to get military aid to the rebels. Deal with the mujahedin in Syria later.

Not to knock your recipe, but whatever my dad does to his turkey before he fries them in whatever it is he uses (I think just straight peanut oil, but knowing him he mixes something else in) makes for one hell of a tasty gobbler.

Smoked is the only way I actually like turkey. Regular cooked turkey isn't flavorless to me; it has a flavor I really don't like! Thanksgiving is usually at someone else's house, so I take a small piece of turkey to be polite and fill up on all the other stuff. I could make whole meal out of just Thanksgiving sides: stuffing, mashed potatoes, corn pudding, homemade cranberry sauce... It's a regular carb fest!

Anywhere from $.50 (no thanks) to $1.50 a pound, average per current googles.
I WAS NOT wanting to go to the meat department and ask them without sounding like a moran what I should get besides butterball; I'm specifically being a hippy-dippy moran myself by refusing to buy butterball this year, but that seems to be about all there is around here. :/

I said a good turkey, not a great one.

My recipe is how to make it edible and tasty without farking it up. A lot of people (most people maybe) try way too hard and end up making a bad turkey.

Although his present condemnation of the Assad regime is of course appropriate, it's rather awkward for Erdoğan that he used to call Assad "a good friend of mine". Better late than never, however.

A problem, though, with supporting the rebels is that while they are the better option at the moment, there's no guarantee some their factions wouldn't conduct reprisal atrocities against Alawites after winning, which is one of the reasons (among others like facing off with Russia and the possibility of getting on the hook for the dangerous, difficult work of rebuilding Syria) that the Western nations are very wary of intervening.
